Charlie indicated that 5 of the ten they interviewed either were or had been head coaches. Said he changed what he was looking for after initialing saying he wanted someone with head coaching experience to one who would be the best fit. Said he decided on Fox on Thursday.
Fox said he is hoping one of his assistants will be a former App player. That he has reached out to this individual and hopes he will come. One assistant (unnamed) starts tomorrow.
On a serious note, it looks like our assistant salaries will be high enough that we aren't going to be hiring someone with no experience. That only leaves a few options: McMahon (unlikely); Ahmad Smith (very possible); Darryl Robinson (we've tried this before, but maybe he wants to give it a shot again - has his wife retired?). I'm sure I'm missing some former players who have moved into coaching. Any thoughts?
As a friend of Nate's, I can say that I think he'd be a really good coach if that's the direction he wanted to take. He's got great knowledge of the game, he can relate to players, knows how to play multiple positions and on top of that, he's very smart. If he wanted to coach then I'm sure he'd be very successful. I haven't heard anything from him that suggests he's tired of playing overseas right now, but it'd be cool to see him back in Boone one day.
