Agree 100 Percent. Some people are calling for Gray to be cut loose immediately for striking a female but looking forward to the return of Canty who did the same thing? Puzzling to say the least.asu66 wrote:-------------------------appbio91 wrote:I don't like this. Winning isn't everything. Everyone is innocent until their day in court. Let him have that day but he's shouldn't play until then. Since he and Gray are charged with exactly the same charge one must wonder, if this was football season, if Coach Satt would let Gray play. Based on this year I don't think so.
Purely for the sake of discussion, if I'm put in charge, Mr. Canty sits at least until his case is adjudicated. If he's found not guilty--he plays the next night out assuming he has the GPA and credit hours to be classified as a junior in good academic standing. If he's found guilty, he may be turning in his uniform. It would depend on whether he's remorseful and whether he has to serve an active sentence. If his attorney negotiates a plea bargain with the DA (let's assume that Canty is a first offender) then he sits until he has completed any assigned community service and anger management counseling. Then he still sits until I'm satisfied he's back on track as a decent citizen. And going forward he's on a short leash as long as he's a student at ASU.
Everybody who's been around this forum; the old Delphi forum or the even older SI forum are painfully familiar with my rants about our basketball program. I want to win and win big; but I want it done the right way. The young woman who was injured in this matter is someone's daughter. I'd want to be able to look her (and her parents) in the eye knowing that I'd handled it strictly by the book.

Re: Jay Canty
Where is the athletic department in all of this? Should there not be some sort of guidelines across the board in place when it comes to suspensions for arrests? A football player gets arrested for assault on a female, and Satterfield suspends him immediately as he should. A basketball player gets arrested for the same act (while already suspended for grades), and he can play as soon as he makes grades. The AD needs to think long and hard about the eligibility of Canty. Just a little consistency would be welcomed.
Re: Jay Canty
I know it's popular to jump on any decision that Capel makes. However, the reality is that just about any coach in the country would play Canty (arguably our best player) unless prohibited from playing. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with the situation. I'm not too fond of it personally. However, the "win or else" expectation drives everything in college sports.

An arrest is merely an accusation. Hundreds of thousands of US citizens get arrested yearly; and nothing comes of it for most of them...except maybe for the embarrassment and rumors. It rises to a more serious level when a person who has been arrested is then charged with a crime by the DA in that jurisdiction.
You are correct; JCanty may ultimately be found not guilty of the charge against him. Or the DA may request that the judge dismiss the charge for certain reasons...usually lack of evidence...or the victim refusing to testify. Or it could go very badly for him.
The issue is that Canty and all other ASU athletes probably should be held to the same standard. I say probably because there may be extenuating circumstances known only to law enforcement officials, CCobb and KPeacock that would lead them to treat some cases strictly on individual merit.

Re: Jay Canty
Cleared to return according to Tommy Bowman.
Not sure if this just means he got his academics in order... or if he is actually cleared to play and his extracurricular issues have also been resolved?
When was the court date he was supposed to have? Or has it not happened yet?

Re: Jay Canty
A resolution has apparently been found. The assault charge was on the docket for Monday, Jan. 8; and it has been removed. The two charges against Canty's brother have also been removed.skjellyfetti wrote:Cleared to return according to Tommy Bowman.
