100% agree and we have no reason to play them. If we are going to lose by 40+ I rather it be to a team in our region so our players don't have to go as far.

Hello NC State and CJ Bailey. He might do unspeakable things to us this year.

I've always felt that way until the last 2 years. Becoming a true minor league team to the major league conferences has changed my view. Now we have to choose things based on economics and aesthetics. We will have a partial team of mercenaries each year that hold loyalty to their next paycheck.
The only drum I beat is to win the conference. That's it. Everything else is just noise.

People galaxy-brain'ed themselves into thinking their little ol' App State can't compete against gazillion-dollar schools because the old ways of cheating are now legal.

Re: Roster/Staff Updates
I mean it’s still different because of the transfer portal.
Before if they were flying under the radar we could develop them and then get at least 2 years of our investment and their hard work to pay off.
Now they leave after one year or even their development year and we basically get little for our investment.
There’s a model that works for the g6 level but the developmental model doesn’t as much anymore

And they suspended kids for getting a tattoo (OSU) paid for or for selling your bowl jersey for $1000 (AJ Green). Todd Gurley signed autographs for money and got suspended ha.BallantyneApp wrote: ↑Tue Jun 09, 2026 8:14 pmI mean it’s still different because of the transfer portal.

10 years later and you can bet on games you’re involved in and still play. Pete Rose rolling over in his grave. No rules anymore

Re: Roster/Staff Updates
At the peak of our FCS championship years I really felt like our team (even with 65 scholarships) could easily compete in mid level FBS conferences. Probably some delusion on my part but I thought we could even go 6-6(ish) in the ACC at the time. That anytime, anywhere thing many threw out a few years ago sounded great and made us feel good and we proved it a few times. It was awesome winning 10 games with rosters full of sophomore starters and we knew pretty much what we had returning the next year. Now it’s just blown up. I don’t even recognize App State football anymore other than our logos on the uniforms. Unless some drastic changes and an overhaul is made those glory days are over.

Re: Roster/Staff Updates
In our peak, we had a starting lineup of very good players that could compete as you said. HOWEVER, what changed my mind after we moved up is the wear and tear on a team throughout the entire season that we didn't endure against FCS opponents week in and week out. I guess you could say, I respect that more now that we are FBS. That is why there is something to say about playing a full SEC/B1G schedule. What that translates into is you need A LOT more depth which is what we have seen in recent years. Some starters are going to go down. You MUST have depth for every game. Can't play starters all game like at Michigan and consistently win. Also, you ain't catching anybody by surprise most weeks.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2026 7:36 amAt the peak of our FCS championship years I really felt like our team (even with 65 scholarships) could easily compete in mid level FBS conferences. He seriously could. If we lose by less than 21 I will be real happy.

Re: Roster/Staff Updates
I hate to admit this, but I don't even know who that guy is. Used to be I knew our third stringers, now I don't even know a preseason all conference player for us.

Re: Roster/Staff Updates
The crazy thing is that transfers use to rarely be named preseason all-conference. Now the magazines are having to or else there aren't enough returning players who are feasible for these awards anymore.

Re: Roster/Staff Updates
We swapped our cultural identity for a run in the rat race when Shawn was dismissed. I think D L is truly good man, a good coach...but he is stuck bargaining with free agents and has little to offer developed or top talent athletes. I predict D L will do a fine job for us, and leave for greener pastures immediatly after. That's the way it is.
Shawn would have been another Jerry Moore. Not perfect, but perfect for us.

Re: Roster/Staff Updates
But folks, let's be honest, the whole system has changed and what existed 10-20 yrs back does not exist now. We mostly changed out of survival. I don't like it but that is the reality. Jerry Moore would not survive in today's college football world doing what he did then.CVAPP wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2026 9:36 pmWe swapped our cultural identity for a run in the rat race when Shawn was dismissed. The 2018/19 App State teams would not exist in today's environment.
