Re: I want to know
Beau. No that is not my point. First we are talking about games played 9 months apart with different players in different settings. Secondly, we all watch a lot of bowl games and it's clear in many that the better team during the season doesn't win and if you are like me you can see "Team A" just isn't into that game. There can be numerous reasons for that. App has never had that happen until last year. I promise you there isn't one coach preparing for this weeks game talking about a game that happened 9 months ago unless they are playing that same team.

Who did we interview? I honestly have no idea who might have been better. I absolutely don't claim to. I will say Rich Rodriguez ened up as the OC at Monroe. He was successful at WVU. I have no idea if he would have been interested or if he would have been terrible. I WANT Clark to be successful. I just feel like his hire was very quick and therefore, I think, lazy. Make fun of my Rich Rod all you want. You asked for a name, so I gave you one.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Tue Sep 06, 2022 1:35 pmWho would you have interviewed/hired? What? Given your monument contributions to the program and high ranking status in the YC, how were you not consulted on this hire? Not sure if I said that, that was not my excuse. Just a fact. I believe in that game we could have had everybody play and l am not sure the outcome would have been much different. I stated my reasons to you.

Nobody wants to lose -- especially the players and coaches. Trust me, us on this message board don't have 1% of the desire for the team to win compared to what is in the locker room.

Clark was hired because he bleeds black and gold, he was ready to take the reigns, his connections to high schools, his connections in the college football world -- and most important, this isn't a stepping stone for him. Could he not work out? Sure. Could he see dollar signs and go somewhere else? Sure. But the chances are a lot lower with a guy of Clark's stature.

Agree. The culture is why we have had such a long impressive streak of consistent winning seasons. Culture can’t be dismissed when making hires.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Tue Sep 06, 2022 2:05 pmAnd Rich Rod was gone after one year. Re: I want to know
Well said. Sometimes the next guy is right there and a school doesn't need to waste time and resources with interviewing song and dance. As you said he might or might not work out. The last thing we need is to go get the "big name guy" who takes lower level (mostly in pay) gigs until that better offer comes along. What does Clark make with incentives, $1M? Don't coordinators at many P5's make close to or double that? So far I think he's perfect for this job. As you said, bleeds black and gold and absolutely appears to love this job.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Tue Sep 06, 2022 2:05 pmAnd Rich Rod was gone after one year. I have absolutely nothing against Clark. I want him to be successful. Really all I want to know is when it will be okay to ask questions. I don't want to see anyone fired, I don't think we are close to that.
In '20 we lost at Marshall, at Coastal and to Louisiana. In '21 we lost at Miami, at Louisiana (twice) and the bowl game to Western Kentucky (apparently that doesn't count). Saturday to UNC in a pretty big showcase game. On the positive side we beat ECU, Marshall and Coastal last year. Maybe that balances out. Maybe I am to critical. But I'm definitely not picking a fight with anyone.

Look, nobody is criticizing this team out of hate. At the end of the day we all love this university and team and want it to be the best it can be. Part of that team includes the coaching and it’s entirely rational to ask questions after getting 120 points scored on us in our last two games.

Re: I want to know
On the SC hire, I always say a good AD always has his short list in his pocket, just in case. If SC was at the top of that list then a short hiring process is the result. Given what we have been through in coaching changes since JM, the logic and methodology used to arrive at SC being hired is more than reasonable to me. Will he be the guy and deliver, that is yet to be seen. So far he is on the upper end of the performance spectrum, not at top, not middle or bottom. That is a good sign for a HC that has not been in that role before. We knew he was a new HC when we hired him so we have to give him some rope.
Some observations that I do like is that he has made several staffing changes each year that tell me he is not satisfied with the results. I like that. We are on third OC in 3 yrs and the initial observations look pretty darn good. Will he need adjustments on D side of ball? Maybe/maybe not. I don't know if it is coaching or what but what I see is SC is willing to make adjustments until he sees he has it right. He has also done it under the radar so it doesn't make anybody look bad. That is not easy. That is all I can ask of a good HC is to not be satisfied with status quo and make smart adjustments to improve. He keeps striving for a higher level of performance out of his staff and the team. I also don't think he is going to bolt at first bus out of town. We need that stability.

Post of the thread goes to Atl.
Clark seems to be coming into his own in year three with his public facing interactions. I'm more confident in him today than I've ever been.

I'm a little more confident as well. I know he loves this place but the one thing left that I feel he has to do is show he can find the next QB in high school and the signs are saying he possibly has in Burger.

I’m playing devils advocate here and asking questions, which is what a message board is for. There’s things to work on in all aspects of the game. There was good and bad Saturday. I said to someone (not via the MMB) that I wouldn’t have been overly angry if we had given up 35-42 points, that offense and qb were quite good. Even then, there would still be plenty of places to improve. Pointing that out shouldn’t be considered blasphemous. Even Clark himself said that our players have to do a lot of things better.

So, the assertion is that Clark is a lazy hire in one thought....then the next thought is..I have no idea who we interviewed...how can one conclude that it is a lazy hire if you have no freaking clue of what the process was....good god.. Please tell me your degree came from some other university beside the great Appalachian State University...

Re: I want to know
I've never been a football coach and I'm going out on a limb by thinking at least 99% of the geniuses on this board have never been one either. If you are or have been one you obviously get a bit of a pass. As much as we were disappointed and perhaps frustrated after Saturday I have to ask a question that I don't think has been answered. Maybe one of you over the top complainers has the answer- what changes or adjustments would you have made Saturday in your roll of armchair defensive coordinator? Please keep in mind that there is a ticking clock and that you prepared for hours and put in the personnel and game plan that the staff thought would work. Also keep in mind that adjustments were made with blitzes and coverage. I only ask this so that I can have a better understanding of what could have been done differently (other than a 2 point conversion to win).
