I like the idea of the cannon, and of playing for a trophy. The rivalry already exists, so might as well give ESPN and the media something to call it, and talk about. It would be even better if that game could be scheduled for ESPN's Rivalry Week every year too.
I remember back in the late 80's and early 90's the Clemson/NC State games were called the "Textile Bowl," and Duke played Northwestern every year during Spurrier's term in what was referred to as the "SAT Bowl." All, no doubt, copy cats from Auburn/Alabama Iron Bowl, but at least something to add a bit of interest to the games (especially for the Duke/Northwestern match-up).
On a side note, Cobb is only half-way copy catting with his "all sports" trophy. Duke and Carolina play football for the Victory Bell, but used to also compete for the Carlyle Cup, which was awarded the school with the most head-to-head wins across all of the shared varsity sports. The Carlyle Cup stopped in 2011.
“When you take that field today, you've got to lay that heart on the line, men. From the souls of your feet, with every ounce of blood you've got in your body, lay it on the line until the final whistle blows.”
