BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University men's basketball has named rising seniors Chris Burgess, Frank Eaves and Michael Obacha as its captains for the 2015-16 season, head coach Jim Fox announced on Thursday.
"We are pleased to announce that Burgess, Eaves and Obacha have been selected as captains," said Fox. "They've shown leadership throughout this past year and it continued through a very productive spring for our team. We are pleased to have them leading us this coming year. They represent what is special about our program and Appalachian State University."
All three players were key cogs in the lineup in Fox's first season at the helm of the Mountaineers. The trio combined to make 81 starts, with Burgess and Eaves starting all 29 games and Obacha starting the final 23 of the season.
Eaves earned second team all-Sun Belt Conference honors after leading the team and ranking fifth in the conference with 16.6 points per game. He was a two-time Sun Belt Player of the Week and made the game-winning bucket with 1.0 second remaining in an upset of Virginia Tech on Nov. 22.
Burgess finished third on the team in scoring (9.0 ppg) and dished out a team-best 84 assists (2.9 apg) while playing the second-most minutes of any Mountaineer (29.8 mpg). He came up big in several wins for App State, including scoring a career-best 24 points in a win over Troy on Feb. 7.
Obacha, who missed the first four games of the season due to a variety of injuries, continued to be one of the teams top rebounders and post defenders. After returning to the starting lineup on Dec. 15 at Georgia Tech, Obacha played 20 or more minutes in eight games, including the final four of the season. In addition to his presence on the court, he also received national accolades for his community service when he became one of 10 college basketball players named to the Allstate/NABC Good Works Team in February.
The Mountaineers return all but one starter from last year's squad that surpassed all expectations by finishing sixth in the Sun Belt despite being selected to finish 11th in the preseason coaches poll.
