I saw that, and it did cause a double-take.

If they're going to pick from the former VCU coaching tree, I'd take Anthony Grant before I'd take Capel, but that's just me. Actually, I'd make Shaka Smart an offer he couldn't refuse.

Long time reader, first time poster...

I had three thoughts when I saw that headline yesterday:

1. Bless their hearts, they have no clue what they are getting into.
2. The heat got to them.
3. Jason Capel must be a heck of an interviewer.

Then I actually read the article...

I always thought that Sendek was a pretty darn good coach for NCSU. He just had the misfortune to be too close to the "V" years and the fanbase had become delusional.

Sendek's only "problem" is that he's squeaky clean. He proudly and steadfastly refuses to cheat, but he has to compete with and beat those who do cheat. His employers expect him to maintain his ethics, but find a way to best the cheaters. That's no easy task.

Someone is waiting to hire Sendek to clean up their mess. In the meantime, that other, off-brand ASU  is looking for a miracle-worker or a close-to-the-vest-cheater. They want to win the right way or win w/o getting caught cheating. Either way--just win, baby.

Sendek was an average coach and he runs a clean program.

Couldn't beat UNC, and actually acted like he didn't care. Imagine how this place would implode if we could never beat our rivals and the coach acted like he didn't care?

No need to imagine it. We witnessed it last football season.

Jeff Capel's only assistant experience was under his dad at ODU when he was hired at VCU and laid the foundation there. I bet he is probably a better coach after spending a few years with Coach K. I'd take him over Grant. But Capel and Grant are both cautionary tales to a guy like Shaka Smart (or Mark Few or Greg Marshall). Turn a mid-major into a perennial power and you could very well have a lifetime job or take the quick money and be out of work in five years. Money is good either way but it all depends on what your career and personal goals are, I guess?

You make some good points, AppfaninA10land. I wonder how much that weighs on Smart, and why he has remained at VCU. He has a great job as long as he keeps doing what he's doing.
