He Used to Coach Here

Former ASU men's soccer coach, Hank Steinbrecher ('78-80) - 20-0-0 in the SOCON in three seasons and compiled a 33-10-2 overall record at App. He left ASU for Boston U, where he coached for 4 seasons, and then went on to work in the private sector before eventually become CEO and Deputy General of US Soccer (1990-2000). He played key roles in attracting and organizing 1994 Men's World Cup, 1999 Women's World Cup, and 1996 Olympic Soccer tournament and has been inducted into US Soccer Hall of Fame, NC Soccer Hall of Fame, Boston U. Hall of Fame, and is recipient of US Soccer's highest award.

His stay in Boone may have been relatively brief, but why is Hank Steinbrecher not in the ASU Sports Hall of Fame? BTW, he was our coach when ASU soccer made SI - as far as I know, a first for any ASU sports team.

Hear Hear! Hank was coach during my time at APP and I was lucky enough to get to know him and work with him a little bit when I was sports director at WASU. One could argue we've never had a more successful coach in any sport. Seems a no-brainer for ASU HoF

There must be a backstory. Both his predecessor, Vaughn Christian, and successor, Art Rex, are in the ASU HOF. Dr. Christian and Coach Rex were each very successful in their respective tenures at App, and each made their own, unique contributions to our school and are very worthy. But like you said, it's hard to imagine another ASU coach who has made a bigger mark on his or her respective sport/profession.

@App in Atlanta - it sounds like we were on campus at the same time - '77-'81.

We were. I transferred in 77 and graduated in '80. Big fan of the soccer team. We used to broadcast some of the games and made a few trips with the team. What a cast of characters!
