Stadium Expansion - Timeline set
So, after doing some research, it seems that Appalachian State has budgeted money out for the expansion of Kidd Brewer Stadium, which will also include the construction of a new residence hall. The money is is the 2018-2019 academic year budget.
To see this in writing, visit page 29 of the UNC System budget plan. http://www.northcarolina.edu/sites/defa ... 013-15.pdf

Re: Stadium Expansion - Timeline set
The levels of funding for the 16 UNC universities differ so greatly that it's mind-numbing. By head-to-head comparison and on a per student basis, Appalachian is only getting crumbs off of the table. It's a disgrace. It's campus politics; and the power is obviously not in Western NC.8993 wrote:So, after doing some research, it seems that Appalachian State has budgeted money out for the expansion of Kidd Brewer Stadium, which will also include the construction of a new residence hall. Re: Stadium Expansion - Timeline set
question, I assume this is state money, and I assume probably roughly half this money is earmarked for the residential hall. If Im correct that means we only have 22-23 million or so, for the stadium renivations. From what I have read that's not alot of money, do we have more money set a side from donations? And if we do, what is the budget goals for the stadium? Regardless, exciting news we finally have a tentative date, but alot of questions still out there. Hope we find out soon about the details.

Since it includes the new residence hall with the enhancements in the document I assume it's going to look very similar to the rendering we've been seeing for the past couple of years.
Still wondering about Track relocation.

$5M to convert a soccer facility to field hockey?
I don't like the look of the proposed plans for a residence hall on the north side of the stadium, or at least the current plans. We need a serious two phase design to get make sure KBS doesn't look even more piecemeal.

Re: Stadium Expansion - Timeline set
I believe it has been discussed on here previously (may have been back on the old delphi board), but what I recall and the "rumor" I previously heard was the new residence hall would be located where owens currently sits and would be built such that it could be incorporated into the stadium renovations/expansion. This is purely speculation on my part, but the Multi-use Development in the proposed budget for 2017/2018 may play into the master plan. Thus, it may be reasonable to add an additional $16 million to the $45 million slated for 2018/2019 which. Using your logic, that would add an additional $8 million to the $22-$23 you derived above - making it an estimated $30 million specifically for the stadium... again this is SWAG.moehler wrote:question, I assume this is state money, and I assume probably roughly half this money is earmarked for the residential hall. Re: Stadium Expansion - Timeline set
To give you an idea as to how money is distributed across the board:
NC State: 34,009 students / $153.1 million awarded / approximately $4,502 per student
UNC: 29,127 students / $531.758 million awarded / approximately $18,257 per student
East Carolina: 26,887 students / $391.125 million awarded / approximately $14,547 per student
UNC-Charlotte: 26,571 students / $319.647 million awarded / approximately $12,030 per student
UNC-Greensboro: 18,074 students / $205.812 million awarded / approximately $11,387 per student
Appalachian: 17,838 students / $130 million awarded / approximately $7,827 per student
UNC-Wilmington: 13,197 students / $51 million awarded / approximately $3,865 per student
NC A&T: 10,531 students / $105.1 million awarded / approximately $9,980 per student
Western: 10,107 students / $60.76 million awarded / $6,012 per student
NCCU: 8,093 students / $181.534 million awarded / approximately $22,431 per student
UNC-Pembroke: 6,222 students / $19.7 million awarded / approximately $3,166 per student
Fayetteville State: 6,179 students / $50 million awarded / approximately $8,092 per student
WSSU: 5,399 students / $94.285 million awarded / approximately $17,463 per student
UNC-Asheville: 3,784 students / $29.91 million awarded / approximately $7,904 per student
Elizabeth City State: 2,421 students / $37.1 million awarded / approximately $15,324 per student
UNCSA: 912 students / $0.86 million awarded / approximately $943 per student
NCSSM: 608 students / unknown / unknown
So, if you rank the monetary value of a student through 2019, it'd go like this:
1. North Carolina Central

I'm not questioning yours and others desire to NOT see KBS as piecemeal but wouldn't that be the effect on a day when the stadium is empty - If it is full of fans on game day would it make that much difference? ---Saint3333 wrote:$5M to convert a soccer facility to field hockey?

That is one perspective, now look at the stadium through the eyes of a recruit at a camp or a prospective student taking a tour.
When it comes to spending money on a project, do them the right way or don't do them. Our university deserves nothing less.

Re: Stadium Expansion - Timeline set
I understand the whole "piece meal" concern, but the reality is that the piece meal ship has already sailed. I love our stadium, and I don't think it looks bad, but it is obvious to anyone that it has been expanded based on need and limited budget. We added as many seats as we could afford to add given the budget we were working with. I can live with that.
The only way I can see this ever changing is to demolish one side or the other and build it to match the other side. If this is done, I would think the older West stands would be demolished, and a decked system would be built. I'm not sure how this works with the building, but it would seem feasible. Obviously, doing this before the track can be a bad move, and I don't see permanent endzone seating being a viable option until the track is moved. We most certainly need a plan, and failure to consider the logical "next" expansion would be rediculous.
Some folks on this board seem to think is absolutes way too much. The "do we need more seats right now" issue seems rediculous. We already "need" the seats from a capacity stand point. The problem is funding, and those are two separate discussions. The decision is made by balancing the two because they are not the same discussion. We need to get to 30K seats as quickly as possible, but I absolutely agree that we need to wait until a fiscally responsible decision can be made. Hopefully that is not too far down the road.

IMO the product is more important than the stadium....if it were not how would anyone go play in that dump in Gainesville FL? (Before the FL a couple of years ago the look from the outside is ok....and the look from the seats is stunning with nearly 100k in the stadium...but have you walked on the "south side" behind visitors bench? it is a menagerie of additions with ramps on top of ramps with concrete poured and never leveled, and pipes hanging low enough that my 5'6" frame had to duck....it is a mess!
Our piecemeal may be architecturally soothing to some.

I agree that now the "cats out of the bag", its time for the administration to come up with an official plan on moving forward. Since we have roughly 6 plus years before ground is broke, I would love the administration to come out and say its official, here is our budget, here is the time table, and here are the designs we are considering, give us transparency on almost every step of the process. I also think it would be a great idea to maybe post the different designs they are considering, and to give the fans a chance to vote for their favorites, as well as give us a chance to voice our concerns. Bottom line it would be very smart to include us, atleast just alittle bit, in the decision making process. One more thing, if we are correct on the budget, 30 million, in this day and age in stadium renivations that's not a lot of money, I don't know, but I hope that App finds atleast another 20 million. If they cant I almost wish they would wait atleast a couple more years, find the money, and try to do this thing correctly

The money is there in the UNC system, but it's obviously more important for UNC to get everything on their wishlist.moehler wrote:I agree that now the "cats out of the bag", its time for the administration to come up with an official plan on moving forward. NC State is 13th, but there's nowhere else in the system that even approaches the development that has taken place on their Centennial Campus in the last 15 years. It's mind-boggling. Maybe they can stand a little lag in the funding.

These types of state level budgets sometimes never see reality. They are planning numbers and details and allocations often get moved around by the time the funds materialize.
I think we need to hire an assistant AD that specializes in fund raising have them pursue our needs through private funding so we have control over our own destiny. Ga State is looking at a new AD and one of the comments from AJC is how important it is for them to get someone in there that has experience raising money from all types of sources. We need that too.

Re: Stadium Expansion - Timeline set
I'm with you! I think it's a great looking stadium and something that we should all be proud of instead of nitpicking every little detail to death. To hear people talk we have either spent too little money or too much. The students seem to like it just fine. I'm still trying to find what "piecemeal" about it, it seems to have everything that every other small stadium I've been to has and it's better than most I've been to. I think with the new addition we'll get the extra seats that we need and if in time we need more we can fill in more. When I talk to people about that track, I usually find as many that like it as ones that don't.Yosef84 wrote:I understand the whole "piece meal" concern, but the reality is that the piece meal ship has already sailed. Even if we had the 200-300 million to build a new stadium I'm not sure that's where the money should go.

I am not sure why any state money would go to athletics. Athletics in most every school has a much easier time raising money than academics does. Donations, TV money , Bowl Money, apparel sales, and ticket money should be a budget that athletic departments would be able to live with. I love my football but things are getting out of control in collage football. If football is really that important to us we should be able to raise ticket prices to a level that will sustain the program.
I read posts about how ASU is losing professors. Maybe that is where the state money should be going.

Re: Stadium Expansion - Timeline set
to a certain point I disagree, we have a really nice stadium by FCS standards, but, by the minimal FBS standards the stadium needs work, the track just needs to go, not only because its an eyesore to look at, but can you imagine how loud that stadium would be if we got the fans right on top of the field, with sound bouncing off the mountains, 30 thousand would sound like 60 thousand. We also need to get the capacity up to 35 thousand, that seems to be a great number where we could fill the stadium and the town could handle the Sat afternoon crowd. But, I want the administration to take their time, and do it right, I especially do not want them to do what JMU did when they expanded their stadium, they payed for it with student fees, it almost a crime how high the fees were, and I would like to see some of the debt reduced before we start the expansion.

In North Carolina, no state money can go to an athletic facility. Whatever has been set aside in the budget is for the dormitory that is incorporated into the design, unless some other part of the expansion is deemed to be for some academic purpose.bcoach wrote:I am not sure why any state money would go to athletics.
