Didn't know if this was mentioned on here, if anyone cares about the old staff. It's interesting that Sampson and Gainey are potentially taking big steps in their careers after being a part of several bad years at App. Both are at major conference schools...can't say the same for Kummer in going to Lamar...but, he at least has familiarity with the state of Texas after working at A&M. Looks like Capel is the only former coach without a job...so, our last 2 head coaches are seemingly unemployed, but the assistants seem to be headed up in the coaching ranks.

Re: Justin Gainey
It's been posted before. Sampson was no stunner; as he was his daddy's first hire. Imagine that. Wojo thought so much of Gainey's experience at Elon and App that he made him start at the bottom as DBO. He might have gotten a $3,000 raise; but living in Milwaukee will eat that up fast just in rent alone.
Proud triple-degree App grad--Classes of '66, '70 and '81.

Re: Justin Gainey
I figure just the experience at Marquette could lead to better opportunities in the future, even if he is DBO. If Wojo has some success with this staff, it could pay off for Gainey in the long run.

Re: Justin Gainey
I know Sampson got the job because of his last name, but this past year he was the assistant I was the most impressed with.
Never had too much of an opinion on Gainey. I think he suffered in that he was an inexperienced coach under an inexperienced coach. If he's got the chops, he'll rise through the ranks soon enough. Marquette isn't a job to scoff at, even a DOBO. Their budget is one of the tops in all of MBB (I believe second behind only Duke).
Kummer didn't impress me too much. Lamar is a tough situation coming off a season worst than ours.
I believe Capel could be a good coach one day. He just needs to sit under the learning tree for a few years. Also, the reason he doesn't have a job right now might have to do with that kid dtae. What is right and what is perceived by the coaching fraternity are sometimes two different things.
