40 Shot, 5 Killed, in Spate of Weekend Violence in Chicago
Police respond to shootings Friday in Chicago. At least 40 people have been shot, five of them fatally, in a spate of violence across Chicago since Friday.
This is just one weekend. My intent is not to argue but to get people to open their eyes to the fact that things have changed. This was not going on 40 years ago. We are doing something wrong in this country and I pray we will recognize it and do something about it. I have no way of proving the FBI or any of these reports right or wrong but I can read the headlines. This just isn't a case of more coverage, it truly is a case of more violence. Again I really don't want to argue I just want things to change.
I don't want to sound all mushy but I love people and I especially love kids. What is happening to these kids is just ripping my heart out. We owe them more than this.

I was teaching 40 years ago and no doubt times are different but let's not pretend that there weren't bigger problems than chewing gum and cutting in the lunch line. If you bothered to read the report from the Curry School, you can see that overall school violence in down. Of course, the incidents of violence today in some cases (shootings, etc.) can contribute larger numbers of casualties. Believe me, the fist fights I saw earlier in my career were greater in number than the ones I witnessed in the twilight of my career. Of course, most schools today have resource officers on campus in addition to security guards which likely acts as some deterrent. In the end, if someone wants to create chaos on a school campus, there is little that can be done to prevent it. Schools, as suggested earlier, are far safer for many kids that their homes or neighborhoods are, remain one of the most open segments of American society and it does make them vulnerable to planned mayhem.WVAPPeer wrote:RIGHT ON!!! But, there are so few school homicides that the I doubt you could find a pattern even if we had all the data going back to 1950. Regardless, today's students are vastly more likely to be killed or hurt at home than in school. School is a very safe place for young people.
But, if we're talking about violent crime generally, or violent crime committed by young people - i think its very obvious that its way down (ps: teenage pregnancy rates are also down). I've never heard of a study or researcher who didn't come to that conclusion. Rather, than choosing not to believe the data I would recommend you reexamine your own perceptions about the world.

Re: Jilted teen slashes girl's throat on prom day
I was referring to school homicides in general, not specifically shootings. But, for what its worth there have been shootings in schools (perpetrated by teachers, students, and others) since our nation's founding. I'm sure this wikipedia list is incomplete (especially for the early 1800's) but it seems to shed some light on this subject. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sc ... ted_States
This Washington Post article indicates mass shootings have not increased over the last 30 years; though mass shootings not attached to other crimes, like Robbery, do seem to be up. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/won ... re-common/

Again I am not trying to argue and I did bother to read the report. I am not sure why you are taking this so personal. That was not my intent so this will be my last comment on the subject. I understand that there were fist fights back then as I was in some of them. That is not my point. My point is that not many fistfights killed kids. Yes I know some did but not many. The type of violence today is way over the top. I don't understand how we can be comparing the type of violence back then with today. Overall school violence being down is masking the problem. What kind of violence? A fist fight vs a kid with an AR15? If the answer is that there is little we can do about it then that is a condemnation of this country.hapapp wrote:I was teaching 40 years ago and no doubt times are different but let's not pretend that there weren't bigger problems than chewing gum and cutting in the lunch line. Yes of course there were fist fights - probably more than today - I would say mainly because in those days that's how many "disagreements" were resolved and the punishment wasn't as strict as today - I remember breaking up a number of fights but I honestly don't remember a serious injury and certainly not a death - a great majority of time the fist fight marked the end - rarely anything happened after that - It was over ---hapapp wrote:I was teaching 40 years ago and no doubt times are different but let's not pretend that there weren't bigger problems than chewing gum and cutting in the lunch line. 1) The stats are most likely correct, less youth violent crime though it is more concentrated in schools I bet.
2) We bend over backwards to keep kids in school. I am not saying that is good/bad but I am sure a lot more would drop out than do were it not for the effort made to keep them in school and some of those are the ones with issues of dealing with others.
3) We do a terrible job with mental health in this country.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

It was a joke and furthermore, it doesn't hurt my feelings to see posts or even entire threads deleted by the moderator.appdaze wrote:JCline0429 wrote:This is the city our esteemed President is from. 'Nuff said.bcoach wrote:40 Shot, 5 Killed, in Spate of Weekend Violence in Chicago

As I said in the prior post. It was a joke intended to bring a modicum of levity to an extremely morbid, depressing, and to say the least, distressing topic. Sorry if you and others may have taken it wrong.
