Some muddy water; and some good news

Unread post by asu66 » Wed Apr 09, 2014 4:05 pm

I'm going to muddy the water a bit. I was told point-blank this morning that Coach Fox will pay a personal visit to D.Graham's former AAU coach and probably look to visit Graham in person before any release decision is made. In the same conversation with persons high on the ASU athletics totem pole, I was told that Coach Fox would also visit North Forsyth guard Kedrick Flomo before signing off on any release. On the other hand, Fox apparently is going to allow Alabama forward Rasheed Worrell to walk. No further contact with him is a expected.

This info obviously conflicts with other reports in this forum. I dunno what that means. Time will tell.

Those same conversations reported above revealed that neither Jay Canty nor Aaron Scott will return next season. Although both still appear on the university student database, they are believed to be in the process of withdrawing from school.

Fox conducted a team practice yesterday, with 11 players in attendance. Reports were that our guys were draggin' well before the session ended. Fox was said to be well-pleased with his first official look at his players. His take was that they do some things very well; and other things very poorly. Much work will have to be done. One interesting note...our guys shot like 60% from the floor in yesterday's practice; but during the just completed season, they often couldn't throw the ball in the ocean. Coach Fox says it's all about motivation! Hmmmmmmmmmm, I like this guy better by the hour.

Also from the above mentioned conversations, it is believed that two new assistant coaches will be on the road recruiting by this weekend--along with Coach Fox.

I have no inside info on whether or not his campaign will be successful, but Kernersville (NC) East Forsyth HS head basketball coach Mike Muse is said to be campaigning hard to become part of Fox's basketball staff. Campaigning's often not the best plan. We'll see in due time.

I will tell you this, Jim Fox is a man with a plan. His intellect and his organizational skills are immediately obvious. He's got his hands in 50 "deals" at once; and he's not showing any anxiety. Very impressive guy.

Met Coach Fox's mom (Pat) and dad (Jim). They were visiting campus from New York and sitting on the front row during the presser. Jim Fox (the elder) is the head of AAU programs in the NYC Metro area and on Long Island. How's that for a recruiting edge?

Coach Fox, by the way, was being escorted around campus and around the athletics center this morning by former women's basketball star Kelsey Sharkey. Kelsey was getting him from place to place on schedule; while also shooting video for future basketball promotions. Hangin' with Kelsey isn't a bad way for Fox to spend his day.

In CC's introductory remarks this AM, he said that the search committee interviewed ten (10) finalists for the head coaching position. He said that most of the names of the candidates never hit the press (were never leaked). He said that most of those ten candidates were interviewed twice; and that several were interviewed three times.

More later.

OK...that settles it! That's dat_kid_dtae's ticket to carry on another recruiting drama for a few weeks, before he signs with NC State. He sees Hillsborough Street Wolfies in his dreams. :!:

Brian at Rivals has a couple of good interviews, one with Fox and one with Charlie.

Charlie indicated that 5 of the ten they interviewed either were or had been head coaches. Said he changed what he was looking for after initialing saying he wanted someone with head coaching experience to one who would be the best fit. Said he decided on Fox on Thursday.

Fox said he is hoping one of his assistants will be a former App player. That he has reached out to this individual and hopes he will come. One assistant (unnamed) starts tomorrow.

Alvin Gentry!!!!

On a serious note, it looks like our assistant salaries will be high enough that we aren't going to be hiring someone with no experience. That only leaves a few options: McMahon (unlikely); Ahmad Smith (very possible); Darryl Robinson (we've tried this before, but maybe he wants to give it a shot again - has his wife retired?). I'm sure I'm missing some former players who have moved into coaching. Any thoughts?

Latest news I'm hearing is Bill Self now has inside edge, and he may be close to signing with Kansas. In any event, just glad situation is over and both sides can move on.

Smith seems like the obvious choice. Three years at Charleston Southern after being in Ireland for several years including a year as head coach. If Fox is looking to recruit overseas Ahmad would have some good connections and know his way around over there. Recruiting Europe isn't cheap and it will be interesting to see how much the recruiting budget has been raised.

If his style is anything like McKillops then European style players would fit the bill. Fundamentally sound, tough D and shoot well from distance. Most bigs overseas have far more range than stateside. Stretches an opponents D and opens up driving lanes for athletic guards.

I had the priveledge of speaking with Coach Fox at last night's Charlotte Tour stop. I'm no authority on basketball (or any other sport for that matter) but he does seem to be very energetic and personable. He is an impressive guy and I get a very positive feeling. I will say that he looks very YOUNG in person....or maybe I'm just getting really old (think he's about 40). :-)

Agree, I have to say I'm excited about our men's basketball program with Fox at the helm. After watching his press conference and from what I've read I'm buying what he's selling.

It's good to have this feeling about App basketball again, it's been too long.

Chuck, I like the strategy if what you heard is true. Release, re-recruit, and if they still don't want to come, wish them well and move on.

I would think that Nate Healy would be a good fit, if he's interested. I know he doesn't coach right now, but his style of play would fit right in with the Davidson style that Fox has been accustomed to.
