Nice! That's a pretty experienced group. Any word on what freshmen there are to keep an eye on?

Yes Head will get a look at SS/2b. He will be a utility guy.mtnjax wrote:i would imagine William Head would get some looks at SS or 2B.
surprised to see Moore in the rotation. isn't he the sidearm/submarine guy?
Tyler Moore is a sidearm guy but he has a rubber arm. He pitched 6 innings last year in the SOCON tourney vs Western and shut them down.

yeah, i remember that appearance. he was dominant that game. i'll just be interested to see if he holds up as a starter for a season.Goapps15 wrote:Yes Head will get a look at SS/2b. He will be a utility guy.mtnjax wrote:i would imagine William Head would get some looks at SS or 2B.

I think they'll need to find a third starter besides Moore. And also need springs to grow up fast. Good potential but has struggled so far.mtnjax wrote:yeah, i remember that appearance. he was dominant that game. i'll just be interested to see if he holds up as a starter for a season.Goapps15 wrote:Yes Head will get a look at SS/2b. Re: 2014 Lineup/Rotation
I believe that Springs had back problems last year and that is a reason he struggled. Herd he had some of the best stuff on the team, so I agree he has good potential. I am just excited this season is coming up, I hope they don't disappoint.Blackandgold wrote:I think they'll need to find a third starter besides Moore. And also need springs to grow up fast. Re: 2014 Lineup/Rotation
Moore is the third starter from what I have heard because he is just consistent. He has good stuff and definitely can get 5-6 innings each time out which is a big thing to get from a 3rd starter in college.
I am really excited for this season, a good blend of upperclassmen and underclassmen. We have a few solid JuCo players that joined the team and a freshman to keep an eye on will be Matt Brill.

Re: 2014 Lineup/Rotation
I think Thurber and Farmer could be thrown in as a midweek starters/extra Sunday starter. They both pitched some good ball last year.
Pierson could also fill in the middle infield if Leach is going to be the starting 1B. With how much returning outfield experience there is (Davis, Burris, Troutman, Dobson and Ty Zupcic), someone might have to convert.

Re: 2014 Lineup/Rotation
Agreed on Thurber/Farmer as mid-week starters. Thurber will likely still be the closer and will pitch multiple innings at times on the weekends. Rob Howard could also pitch some mid-week as well. It will be interesting to see how the bullpen shakes out after Thurber.T-Dog wrote:I think Thurber and Farmer could be thrown in as a midweek starters/extra Sunday starter. The outfield is loaded. Dobson could play anywhere on the field and even DH. Burris also can be a utility guy, since he was a high school infielder/outfielder. Pierson/Head will play a little bit of everywhere. It will be nice to have a full compliment of players this year. At the end last year we had 10-11 guys playing everyday and even some of them were not healthy last year.
Ozzy Gonzalez will likely play one of the 2b/SS positions. He looked good in the fall and in his JUCO days. Both AJ Farris and Bradley Morton looked nice this fall as well.

Re: 2014 Lineup/Rotation
Alex Leach sustained a hip injury in the fall and had to have surgery on it in October, so he might not be 100%.

Re: 2014 Lineup/Rotation
Went to the scrimmage yesterday. Temperature was a balmy 33 degrees. They had a 9 inning scrimmage. Considering the conditions I thought everyone played well. This roster has more talent than any App State team in recent memory. That being said there are a lot of young players who need game experience. You can tell that our recruiting has gone up a few notches and with the class coming in next year Billy will have a lot of options at every position. Whaley, Nunn, Thurber, Bauk and Mason threw yesterday. Nunn threw well and Whaley looks like a very good option as the closer. Postions players who I believe will start are J. Davis, Troutman and Morton in the outfield. Infield of Zupcic, Pierson, Dobson and Head. Ozzy Gonzales behind the plate and Leach at DH. Noah Holmes is recovering from labrum surgery but should be good to go soon. We will have a lot of pitching depth but a lot will be young and inexperienced. If any people out there are interested in contributin to the Dugout Club the pdf form is on GOASU. In order for us to put a quality product on the field we need adequate financial support for this team. No donation is too small. Especially all the former baseball players at ASU we desperately need your support.

Re: 2014 Lineup/Rotation
Was at Mountaineer Talk with Jones tonight.
Leach is still recovering from his hip surgery. Right now he's 75-80%. He should be cleared for this weekend, but if he plays it'll be in the DH. Ty Zupzic will likely start the year at 1B, but he can move anywhere that's needed.
Davis will be CF, Troutman in LF and likely Burris in RF. Dobson is also for sure the SS.
Spoke a good bit about Springs. Says it's all up to him and his confidence, but he'll be given the chance to solidify himself in the weekend rotation as the Sunday starter. Also commended Nunn for his "bulldog mentality" in embracing the #1 starter role.
Didn't really specify about anything else position wise.

Re: 2014 Lineup/Rotation
So if billy is saying springs will have the chance for the Sunday spot does that verify Tyler Moore will be the Saturday pitcher?

Re: 2014 Lineup/Rotation
Right now, it's Nunn, Moore and Springs in that order. Farmer is the primary weekday guy and Howard as the second option. Robert Whaley looks to be the closer and Thurber will be used in long-relief just like last year.

2014 Lineup/Rotation
Forgotten the 2012 team already, have we? Haha. This team has talent. I wouldn't go that far though. Pitching is the name of the game, and there isn't no where near the horses on this team. They can develop over their career, but at this time you can't say this team has more talent. It's hard to make that comparison before the season. Let's just wait and see how they do. Performance and talent are separate, but usually go hand in hand to help a team win. Lots of individual and team records are owned by that 2012 team, and will be hard to be broken.Yosef baseball wrote:Went to the scrimmage yesterday. Temperature was a balmy 33 degrees. Regardless, best of luck to our guys this year. 2012 team can't help this team win. Hope some of the guys grow up quick, and with this schedule, they'll have to.
