Dowell did say, I believe in the signing day podcast, that they were looking at dual-threat QBs.

In the same vein, bringing in two portal QBs, neither really working out and both re-hitting the portal a year later was a bit of a failure by Dowell.

Might not have had time to find a dual threat portal guy- harder to come by.
I’d think Kohl could get a look somewhere. Still young, and can’t teach 6’7 with a cannon (even though it might be a tad inaccurate at times)

It’s because it turned into pro football with only the rich teams getting the resources to pay and there are no contracts to possibly keep anyone/anywhere.

There have been numerous references to pro football in regards to the Portal. Actually it’s worse. Imagine if pro players all had one year deals and there was no salary cap. There would be the equivalent of the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, Phillies, etc. The college football equivalent of the A’s, Marlins, Reds, etc would have to either over spend or fizzle out come playoff time. At least with the NFL there is a cap and teams can lock up star players without fear of losing them and the best teams would have to figure out salaries like everyone else.

In regards to the next quarterback I still believe we should look hard at FCS duel threat guys instead of a P4 guy who was 3rd on a depth chart.

Does DLO have a press conference this week? Would love to hear some insight on who starts at QB for the bowl game. Would hope JJ would at least finish out the season in Birmingham. If not, my excitement for the bowl is diminished significantly.

I don’t think they are surprised. Our 2026 QB will come from the portal. I don’t think either QB was part of the plan for 2026. Neither panned out how we hoped. Not sure either gives us a chance to win the Sun Belt. I was more concerned about the Bowl game and who we trot out in 2 weeks.

I don’t have anything to add here other than personal speculation, which is I think it may be Billy.
Dowell mentioned Billy during the press conference last week. I believe it was along the lines of talking to a senior player about being a leader and what that can mean going forward in their life. He called Billy a future CEO. It was an interesting statement to make when there are questions around who will play and lead the team in the bowl game.

DLo presentation was early December.. He stated two to three will leave that we do not want to leave.
Although I hope we do not lose more of the ones we do not want to leave, however, these young men get home and get "advice"... There may be more that come out after getting "advice" . Hopefully not, however, I would not be surprised.

I'd hate to be a coach right now. You've got exactly ONE YEAR with each team, you spend more time fixing the problems (as you see them) in a player's game from their previous coach than you can developing them to be the player to fit your system. Then POOF, they're gone. Once they declare for the portal there's probably very little hope of getting them back. Rinse, repeat.

There is very little to root for these days in my opinion, no there there. Loyalty is a two way street.

I wouldn’t sign up to coach in this era the G6 level, just not worth it.

It's only ridiculous in terms of the environment being what it is. For Kohl, and any other G5 player that had even a decent season, putting your name in the portal and seeing what happens is just smart business. Portal doesn't mean they are leaving, they are just officially seeing what's out there. They might still return.
