I hope we have scouts in Cullowhee today. Both these teams look to have guys that could help us. Thinking about it , one could argue that Barnes and Flowers are two of our best and they were FCS last season.
Mike Jacobs (of Mercer) was my pick for our job here at App State. Coach Dlo got is so I roll with him now.

I’m not sure we aren’t confusing lack of effort with lack of talent.

If I go out there and give it my all against a better athlete (low bar I know) I’m not going to be perceived as giving much effort, perhaps that’s all I’ve got.
This is where we disagree. While your point is well made, our team has demonstrated in parts of every game that when we play to our ability and have focus and don't make mistakes, we can actually score and compete. I really don't see it as talent as much as not playing to our abilities and that includes sloppy undisciplined play. Think of it this way, most games against FBS teams when we were in FCS were tight in the first half (many were not but bear with me) but in the second half, our depth and lack of talent (comparatively speaking) would catch up to us and we would lose (often by a lot). In your example, even your best effort won't be able to compete. You could play perfectly and it wouldn't matter. If our team actually played perfectly (up to our talent) then we would have 1 loss on the season (Boise). There are extended moments in every game where we have played up to potential, and we showed we could compete and win. The issue is that those moments are overshadowed by the more frequent moments of sloppy, undisciplined, unfocused football that causes our losses. Does anyone actually think that Dozier or MBake or Barnes doesn't have the talent to catch every pass thrown to them? But of course, we have all seen that they all drop plenty. Not trying to call out any individuals but it is the easiest example to make. if we could ever play up to our talent we can compete and win against most Sun Belt teams. Now, don't get me wrong, I still want better players.

I think it goes back to the fundamental problem that is the transfer portal. There is no more loyalty or commitment in college football. Everyone knows if things go bad, they can always transfer somewhere else next year. How many of our players (or coaches) even care about the rivalry with GSU? It's pay for play and it's here to stay.
I said before the game that the coaching staff and half the players had no understanding of the rivalry. I was proven to be correct.

Here’s the Devil’s advocate response to that. NIL and the Transfer Portal exist in Conway and Statesboro. Both of those teams treated the respective games as a rivalry, played chippy and one tried to plant a flag at midfield.

The GaSo fans are not happy with Clay Helton, yet he can get his team off the bus ready to play and fired up.

Just because you are getting paid (and I don’t believe they all are getting paid) doesn’t mean you can’t be passionate about your job

National TV/packed stadium and the sideline wasn’t energized. Watch the other G5 mid week games. Coming off a break, coaching staff should have had the team ready to run through a wall and had some wrinkles in the game plan.

I’d say 50% of the dropped balls are guys fairly open in space and other 50% are passed that are low or behind the player.

The latter is due to poor protection and a QB that gets fluttered.

The former half is a function of good play calling, route running and separation from the DB. That takes talent and a good scheme. The coaches can’t prep a player any harder to catch the ball, that comes down to talent and consistent talent.

We have players that are good at some aspects of their position and below average at others.

Which is more likely, finding and signing five stud offensive linemen or a QB who at a minimum can extend plays when protection breaks down and better yet is a threat to break out for twenty yards when it happens?

Probably the QB. However, that may not help the running game from RB. Understand RPO, however, if we have same type of OL, we will not improve much. IMHO, we need both. If not give, 3 and hopefully the others on the roster develop

I agree. However resources meaning $$$ being limited , we need a dual threat. This is just not the era of the drop back passer. All of the teams playing at a high level make you gameplan for a dual threat.

Let’s say you are a General Manager and you have about $1.3 million in NIL. How are you allocating that next year between current players and portal guys?

Diversify.

If we allocate 40% to lineman that would be a good start.

Would love to see the current allocation.

DLO has a vision for his team. It may work or it may not, but I think it’s pretty clear by now he doesn’t really care about the history of App and its rivalries and traditions. And why would he? He’s a sec guy and an nfl guy.

Can we say for certain that he doesn’t care about App’s rivalries or put any stock into them?

ps–this isn’t a rhetorical question

I too, would like to see the dollars allocated to each and every player currently receiving NIL money. I see no reason why that info should not be available for all to see.
