I agree. Teams like App didn’t used to lose the better players unless they wanted to sit out a season. Now they don’t. We also don’t lose players who upgraded for a payday even to be a backup. We aren’t going to find studs who sat the bench at P4’s and magically become All Americans at App State. I wish we could really just recruit, develop and try to retain those hidden gems we used to find.MrCraig wrote: ↑Sat Sep 27, 2025 7:55 pmThe secret that no one seems to want to admit is that NIL is NOT the reason App is losing because NIL hasn’t ACTUALLY changed the game. There has always been a massive money disparity in college sports. Now, it’s just wide out in the open. App will be good again when they get back to what they’ve always been. The underdog. The little engine that could. Like someone else said, focus on developing players and gleaning the overlooked players who have a chip on their shoulder. Lots and lots of those guys still exist.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 27, 2025 7:50 pmI ask this with all seriousness. It’s mentioned over and over that we can only compete with a big influx of money. How exactly is that going to work at App? How much money is needed? What is the ROE that is acceptable? If we go 6-6 on average is that worth it? Will money buy desire? Will money prevent penalties and awful turnovers? I believe there is a reason why a huge number of players are available in the portal for us to choose from. They weren’t good enough to play at or above our level. Some might have been lazy or had bad attitudes. We need a coach (maybe we have him) who can make over half of a new roster each year gel. It’s a huge challenge. I suspect that most G5 middle of the pack teams will bounce around between 5-7 and 8-4 every year.

Ok then well just pack it up and go play Lindenwood every week instead of having P5 schools coming to Boone.

Look, I didn’t actually mean it. The last 5-6 years have taken a toll on my sanity.LKN_Lawyer wrote: ↑Sat Sep 27, 2025 8:09 pmOk then well just pack it up and go play Lindenwood every week instead of having P5 schools coming to Boone.yosef69 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 27, 2025 8:02 pmSame as we once were

Without Swanns poor decision making, this game would be within reach. We have 2 QB whisperers and he keeps making these throws.

Develop talent and it leaves for money. In today’s game you get what you pay for. And we are struggling. The bright side is that most of our conference mates are in the same boat.

Truth. Virginia Tech made a living with that lunch pail attitude when they were finding low 3 star guys and developing them. We can get back to that. Had we played Va Tech in those days, they probably would have beat us pretty good.MrCraig wrote: ↑Sat Sep 27, 2025 7:55 pmThe secret that no one seems to want to admit is that NIL is NOT the reason App is losing because NIL hasn’t ACTUALLY changed the game. We’ve got to concentrate on getting the hungry players through the portal. FCS guys who have been developed there and are eager to prove themselves. And then hit the occasional right P5 transfer wanting the same.
