Re: idiot students
Another dorm life circa 1982 memory:
Justice Dorm, hall bathroom: Heavy ice on the inside of the shower room window most of the winter. Not uncommon to walk in on a couple showering together
Some idiot taking a leak on the steam radiator that was located next to the urinals...steamed urine filling the bathroom...
Walked in on Sat morning and someone had tossed their groceries all over the bathroom the night before. Cleaning staff refused to clean it so that bathroom was out of comission for a couple of weeks.
fun stuff
one of my kids went to UTK, private bathroom and weekly maid service. it is what it is...

Re: idiot students
Truths all around from both sides. More money is made now than ever before, but things costs higher than ever before. There are also more “wants” vs “needs” available to the consumer. Streaming services, phones and their unlimited plans, huge car debts (and also the length of the notes), food delivery services. There are so many more things available today that we (including me) have been conditioned to think is normal that just didn’t exist 20-30 years ago.
Houses have increased in price over the last 30 years but the average new home has also increased in size by roughly 1,000 sq feet. Interest rates are actually still near all-time lows. People want certain things so the corporations provide them at certain prices.
To paint a broad brush, I don’t think the luxury items are what is doing this generation in. I think it is the multitude of small things conditioned as “normal” that add up. The problem is there are just a plethora more of these small things than there use to be. It is a challenge to get ahead but it’s still possible if you say no, which is difficult when most people have grown up to only hearing yes their whole life.

To clarify one thing on my post above because I don’t want it to be taken the wrong way - I’m not saying streaming services are why this new generation is struggling. I was just giving example of things that didn’t exist but are now widely used.

I just want to say that we had a TV wheeled into our classroom and watched a plane fly into a building live and also still had to finish class.
Man, every generation had stuff. This whole going in circles thing helps no one. To be fair it really didn't get outrageous until after 2020 so most of these problems are new-ish.

I think this is what is so amazing about football and just how special sports in general are. There's so many of us from different generations, different locations, different past experiences, different social classes, different political views, and different world views, all of which divide us. Yet, for a day, we all put on our Black & Gold and in unity cheer like hell for our Mountaineers. The guy next to me in the stands may be on the opposite political spectrum as I, but he'll be the 1st guy I high-five when the fireworks go off and Adam Whitten is saying "and that's an App State Touchdown."
There is beauty and power in Unity. I feel like we as American's have forgotten this. I hope all of us as App State sports fans can agree, that instead of focusing on way's we are different and celebrating groups of individuals, that we focus on unity and everything that unites us. As both Americans & as Mountaineers.

Aren't Millennials by definition at most 25 years old? On Jan 1, 2026 wouldn't the oldest of the Generation just turn 26. Middle school children is possible Iguess, if they have High School age children that kid is either Doogie Howser or someone deserves to be in prison

Gen Y (millennials) are 1981-1996 (29-44 year olds)
Gen Z - 1997-2012
Gen Alpha - 2013-2025
I'm barely Gen X and honestly believe I got the best of both experiences. i.e. internet at age 16 and of course this board!

Wow, well said. Now how do we convince folks this is more important than a transgender playing a game?Gonzo wrote: ↑Tue Sep 02, 2025 3:37 pmEntirely serious. Our current system is a mixture of consumer capitalism, fascism, and feudalism, and there's nothing any 30-something can do about it. Older folks moving to smaller homes are selling their family-sized homes to private equity for cash offers. Millennials and Gen Z need two professional incomes just to live like a tradesman with a stay-at-home wife in the 70's. It's completely f*cked.
I know dozens of boomers who are kind amazing people who are no more complicit in the creation of this modern dystopia than I am, but as far as who was the working and voting age generation when our nation began to take this path is clear.

One of the first signs welcome to 4th Floor Eggers was put up by my "older and wiser" Eggers RA Barry Zimmerman -
"If you blow grits, no matter for what reason, You clean it up!"
Of course no one did.
Always get a chuckle remembering some of his witty directional signs for us new young Freshman
Lived in Justice in '83-84, it was an old dorm back then..lol

Nothing says, “welcome to adulthood” like gang showers in the dorm.
Also, don’t forget surviving on stuff like ramen from the hot pot on your desk, Boone Bagel by the dozen, $5 pizzas at the Red Onion on Mondays and $5 Hindenburgs from Macado’s on Tuesdays…all because your meal card ran out of money way before the end of the semester.

Simple, quit letting males play in female leagues and stop stealing opportunities away from females. Even one of my staunchest liberal friends, who has 2 daughters, is completely against his party on this issue. Some folks are able to multi-task when it comes to political issues, and this one is important to a lot of folks on both sides of the aisle.
How do we convince those that cheer on the invasion of females' spaces, that it's not fair for women to compete against men?

One of my last meals in Eggers after running out of money when the semester was ending was a hot dog left in the fridge I cooked in the hot pot and when I was almost finished eating it I happened to look at the bun and it was green mold all on the inside.

Well, first, you explain that this isn’t happening. Then, you show me where men are taking roster spots from women and dominating the sport. How many trans athletes were on the championship teams of the WNBA, NWSL, women’s college softball, basketball, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, track, cross country, or golf?
Finally, bring me one human American who is “cheering on the invasion of men in women’s sports.”

You’re dangerously close to agreeing with me. The government deserves the majority blame for weakening the dollar, increasing inflation, and skyrocketing education costs. To which generational age cohort did most of the government belong to when these laws were passed and programs created? How many of those people are STILL in government seats?Saint3333 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 04, 2025 8:23 amI appreciate oversimplification with little context. When did inflation increase the most, when the government increased the money supply, hopefully you were complaining each time that occurred.MrCraig wrote: ↑Thu Sep 04, 2025 6:32 amCertain "luxury" items becoming more ubiquitous and affordable doesn't equate to a higher quality of life. The US dollar buys less for 30-40 year olds now than it did when Boomers/Gen-Xers were in their 30-40s. The cost of education and housing has skyrocketed in the last 25-30 years. Upward mobility, through blue and white collar jobs, is harder now than any time since WWI. These are facts you can find with a simple Google search.Saint3333 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 03, 2025 6:09 pmImagine everyone in your school carrying around a $1,000 smart phone, wearing Jordan’s, and getting to live in suite style college dorms vs 10’x15’ cinder block walls with two bathrooms per hall.
Those prior generations kept raising the bar of what is provided to their children and then the government stepped in for those that couldn’t keep up the jones on their own in the name of “equity” providing tax subsidized services and goods.
The piper at some point will need to be paid, but gen Y had a much more posh lifestyle than any generation before them and they had no issue with the terrible generations before them paying the bills. You will give your kids more than you had and the cycle will continue.
Your claim that Gen Y had a more posh lifestyle than any generation before them is flawed. It's also important to remember that Milennials aren't kids anymore. They are at or reaching middle age. They have kids in middle and high school. They are the target demographic for basically everything now. Why do you think there are so many news articles written about how Millenials destroyed the diamond market or the luxury car market, etc? Because they ain't got no money!
The cost of education began it's skyward movement once the government began loaning money without regard to an ability to repay those loans. Couple that with the posh living quarters and other arms race amenities and it became a vicious cycle. That generation certainly lived a better lifestyle than prior generations. You can argue when they are 18-22 and were ignorant of the potential consequences for taking out a $200k loan for a major that would provide a job/career that pays under $50/annually. That system sucks, but they gladly signed up for it at the time.
The diamond market was a propped up marketing campaign for decades that was been destroyed by a lower cost, yet similar quality product in lab grown diamonds. The WSJ podcast just had an episode on this a couple weeks ago you may enjoy.
Luxury car market is a strange one to call out, the average American has never been the target demographic for those and to insinuate gen y killed that would further support the claim that gen y's expectations of the posh items they "deserve" isn't realistic for the average American. But in reality gen y values experiences versus material items, they are why travel (and "luxury" trips) is up. Another example of how they're quality of life isn't suffering all that bad.
Just maybe not everyone gets a trophy after all. Or perhaps they are just choosing different trophies than the previous generation.
So, if you agree that these are problems created by the boomers in government, why is it when a millennial complains about them they just need to buckle down and deal with it? Why don’t we instead hold our elected officials accountable for fixing these problems?

You are really throwing it all in the pot together and while I agree with some of your points, you are also taking some creative liberties with others. Just causally tying “climate change” to wages and blaming boomers for it is dubious at best. And I’m not sure what dismantling investment into
Social programs means. All we do is throw money at social programs with mixed results to put it kindly. You also leave out the complete scam that are many universities
these days. Kids are going hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to obtain bullshit degrees that don’t earn them anything in the work force. Conversely, while not sexy, Kids who are attending trade schools are doing much better financially and aren’t starting out under debt they can’t get out from under. And I’m curious what combined total you arrive at for two professionals to live in the United States. I’m not slingin mud and I want to be respectful of your opinion but saying Boomers have turned our country into a dystopian wasteland seems a bit hyperbolic. And like I said, there are points you make I agree with, I’m simply pointing out there are other variables both good and bad that are
Contributing and every generation plays a part.
So I ask, is there really no jobs available in the economy for the average 25-35 year old? Or is it there are no low labor, high paying "easy" jobs that a 30 year old wants to do and prefers just staying at home and blaming the Economy instead? I'll agree it's open for debate.
