We had our one legit window to make a NY6 bowl in the 2010s after we moved up and the limits lifted.

We no longer have a real shot at anything meaningful. Now that it's all out on the table we have no chance at all. We all need to move on from thay thought as it is what it is. Even if they put guard rails on it we still can't compete. So what if they put a 20 mil salary cap. We don't even have 2 mil. We all made the decision to go to a small sports school. We need to accept App athletics for what they are and try our best to excel at our level. That's not a sobering reality, that has been our reality all along. We had one small window and that window is gone. None of this should have been a surprise to anyone.

I've been beating this drum for a couple years now under Clark every time someone would talk about our schedules, who we play etc. There is one thing and one thing only that matters. Win the conference. Nothing else matters, just win the conference. If good things happen because of that then awesome. If not then we are still conference champs going to the table scraps bowl to most likely play a peer school.
That kind of thinking would never have ever beaten Michigan.

Like it or not The Portal and NIL have really hurt the Biggest Football Powers the most as well as the expansion of the playoffs. Appalachian and the rest of the G5 have a road to win a national championship again. Be it improbable, maybe, but there is a path now that did not exist before.

We have a head start, because our main color is Black which for most schools is a special color uniform. Always bet on Black.
This world didn't exist when we played Michigan. NIL is going to hurt top G5 worse than top P5. The reality is that when we get, say, a freshman receiver that nabs 650 yards and 9 TDs, instead of getting to watch them grow and become a top-tier 1000-yard 16 TD senior who helps us win big games, we will watch them on a P5 team their sophomore year. As soon as top G5 talent emerges, they will be P5 talent. If the portal existed, Quick, Armanti, Cadet, Jackson, Evans, Hunter, and so many others would have been poached, and the Michigan would have never happened. This world didn't exist. That Boise St team would beat any G5 team out there this year. No G5 team had anything close to that running back. They got rocked. G5 will be given a token ticket as long as the current playoff format and division format exists. As soon as the P4 can do it they will eliminate G5 contention.

Just win the conference.

Can we change the title of this thread to “beating a dead horse… again!”?
I think this horse is very much alive and running circles around everyone. It's going to continue to run wild until someone figures out how to rein it in.
And having ANOTHER thread about it won’t change a single thing.
So the most active topic to affect college athletics is boring to you? Got it. Yeah i miss the old days of just bitching about Clark endlessly which you never seemed to get tired of.
I think you're confusing me for someone else. I don't mind talking about the changing landscape of college athletics, but I get tired of the "woe is poor ol' wittle App State" thing that people keep going on about.

Yes, it is not the same world it was when we beat Michigan, but the stars in waiting were buried on teams like Michigan and never got to play, because the people in front of them never got hurt. Now those same players can transfer to schools like Appalachian and be a star. Before, they were on a roster never able to realize their full potential.

Here is the problem. Those top P5 backups aren't dropping to G5 in any significant numbers. They take 75-100k to be top backups or transfer to lower P5 schools to be starters and get 150k. They aren't dropping to G5 to get 25k and a coupon for a free oil change and tow from Bill's Garage. We might get a few here and there but if they cant be the starter at a P5 school but are big time at G5 then lets revisit earlier comments about G5 chances in the post season.

Yes, and at this point, I think just about every possibility of what the future MIGHT hold has been discussed and rediscussed on this board. Meanwhile, the actual news of new coaches, players transferring in, and basketball is almost ignored by all but about 3 commenters.

I’m also choosing to believe that a lot of these changes will actually benefit App State.

Fantasy. Those players will transfer to the highest bidder.
As they should. That’s todays college athletics.

The goal of absolutely every college football team needs to be to win the championship but the reality is that 130ish will fall short. If App fans can’t get past the obsession of reaching the CFP and simply enjoying games then it’s pointless. It seems like an eternity since Boise played that first game. The difference in an Ohio State and an App State is so massive (and growing) that it’s not even funny. Are we going to see a drop in bowl games as the game progresses? I have never seen the point in two 6-6 G5’s spending extra money that many probably don’t have to send a team to Birmingham for 4 days to play another game in front of 17k fans on December 18.

App fans can't get past the obsession of reaching the CFP? Who are you talking to on a regular basis.

The majority of the craziest people in our fanbase (i.e. those of this board), are wanted to compete for SBC titles. CFP would be a once every two decades type run is our wildest dreams.

Those fans are insane. Not expecting even a top 20 team in todays world but do expect a Sunbelt Championship.

I completely agree with you guys. There have been the crazies on this board who spoke extensively about how the Sunbelt champ could (and should) be able to finish in the top 4 rated conference champs hence securing a CFP bid. That same crew believes that we have the resources and the “brand” to achieve this goal. Most rational people are still on board with competing for a Sunbelt championship along with whatever post season award is available. If the token G5 slot remains that representative will most likely still get throttled in a playoff game. Personally I’d hate to see a great 13-0 App team get destroyed in Boone in a playoff game.
