Re: DJ Smith DC
Hopefully this is true. Seems like it would be a nice pickup as App. St. connections.
For any DC for the 2025 season, the DC is facing some significant challenges.unless App. St. has some young talented players that did not play this year. With transfers out and graduations, most of DL will need replacement with good players. We are not where we would like at LB ...and secondary is suspect....
Hopefully, the recruiting expertise can demonstrate itself over the next several weeks to months. Just my opinion, our D retooling is more than a one year idea. With that said, if it is Coach Smith that takes the position...seems like a move in the right direction.

Re: DJ Smith DC
I'm excited to see DJ back on campus and on the staff. I wonder where all the nay-sayers who said hiring Shawn Clark was a "lazy hire" and that we stuck with the "good ol' boy" network are now. Crickets....
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

So far, I like Loggains methods. Keeping a lot of the support staff to keep the culture, bring in some other pieces that know the culture but can expand on it, and some fresh faces.
I am still hesitant on the hire and think I will be until we see results on the field, but I don't think that's necessarily because of DL. I think that's just my pessimism on how college sports operate as a whole now.

Re: DJ Smith DC
Clearly you see the difference between a life long G5 OL coach and a rising SEC CO-DC?

Most people are fine hiring within the App family as well as outside the App family if they have the experience and capacity to perform at a high level.

Re: DJ Smith DC
If you notice, Loggains is hiring people with NFL ties, because they speak the same language. You could see that in his interview with Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks.704App wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 9:05 amSo far, I like Loggains methods. Men it's a GREAT Hire if the money is there to BUY Players... Remember Players WIN Games coaching matters but NO-Money = NO-Players = NO-Wins... Similar Concept as in MONEY BALL >

Re: DJ Smith DC
Got to have money but don't need 30M either. Some of the most expensive players are selfish and aren't team players. We need to get evals right and find those who are being undervalued. We had many studs from Satterfield and earlier that would not have been offered a lot of money coming out of high school. We have to get back to finding those players.Dragon_Never_Sleeps wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 9:33 amMen it's a GREAT Hire if the money is there to BUY Players... Re: DJ Smith DC
I’m excited too. Bad comparison imo.
1. We tried to hire a proven SEC DC that had no App connections 1st but got outbid.
2. Co-Dc and recruiting coordinator at a top 25 sec program to solo DC makes more sense than co-oc at a top 25 g5 program to head coach

Re: DJ Smith DC
He had at least 2 who went to the NFL and several others who had good seasons for them. I think he did a pretty good job with his group.
