It's been a hell of a 20 years

Unread post by appstatealum » Fri Sep 20, 2024 7:15 am

Just wanted to put this out there- it's been a helluva 20 year run for AppSt in College Football.

I was adamantly against paying players because of what it would do to college football. Not that they weren't deserving, but it had zero chance of being beneficial to the product and integrity of the game and it would ruin the "underdog" stories and true football cultures due to the money-first and semi-pro focus. AppSt tried to exist in both worlds and it was never going to work. Last night was inevitable and predictable, but it still stung.

We barely beat a 3 win team. Got blown out by South Alabama. We have fallen so low it’s pathetic.

The worst part is it looked like not a single player gave a damn.

I'm sure they give a damn, but that's what total defeat looks like. Being out manned and out coached too. It looks like a light bulb went off last night in ALL of App Nation. It's a stark realization where the program is and it's not a good feeling right now

They may SAY they gave a damn, but actions and body language say different. I saw a group that had absolutely quit in the 3rd qtr.

And here is the thing- I'm way past my peak athletic years, but I'd never go down without swinging, especially if I had that "A" on my uniform. It's a pride thing and AppSt must be defended at all costs. These players are employees, of course they don't care. And we wonder why our culture is the way it is.

First time i have EVER seen an App team absolutely quit. I have seen us be outmanned and out-talented but never quit.

100%. I don't know how the checks are being written to the players but I hope they are stopped this week. Anyone paying for that needs to stop. Heck, the lack of effort I saw tells me the players should be paying us to watch.

I really believe we have to limit our activity in the portal and that signing as many as we have has ruined our culture.

Hopefully we see a vast improvement but if our play the first few weeks keeps up I fully expect Gillin will make a move.

I could completely agree with the “culture” argument except for one thing. South Alabama sure seemed to have a “give a damn”. They had superior athletes at every position and a superior attitude and they are a peer university. So if they can do it why can’t we?

Horn gave a damn, that man ran 97 yards to make that tackle knowing our defense couldn't stop them even if he somehow caught him. I'm not ready to throw a blanket statement out like that.

pretty sure he was the ONLY one running after the play. QB was on the bench with his helmet off by that time.

And he sure as hell didn’t sell out to get the snap he fumbled.

Can’t get 7 standing there as that back managed to break 27 tackles for that 8 yard TD

What a ride, shoutout to all the former players and coaches who took us to where we got to. Sucks the program doesn't care to maintain the standard that was set by those that came before.

Keeping this coach this long, after years of not reaching The Standard...never once reaching the standard in 5 years...is shocking and disgraceful to those that paved the way.

Dark day in our program, I hope those in charge decide they want to maintain a high standard of winning here. Seems we've lost the care for it.

We were never immune from a mediocre stretch. It happens….and I’m sure those with accountability will handle it.

I was thinking: Since the Sparky woods era, is this the longest we have gone without winning a conference championship since our most recent one in 2019?

Now that I think about it, I think the period between 1999 and 2005 was the longest.

Posted this offseason: since 1987 there have been three classes that didn't win a conference title; 2003, 2004, 2023 and soon to be 2024.

And to top it off for them they lost their likely top 100 draft pick Shavon Revel Jr to a torn ACL in practice on a special teams play. I will be interested to see how they do against Liberty.
