Truth is, it is not just Joey that we have to worry about. We have A LOT of young talent that is putting out top quality game tape. Our freshman Nate Johnson leads all FBS freshman in sacks, Spellman has blown up since we switched to the star defense and many others are doing well, not to mention our receivers and tight ends and backs. Considering how well Jalen McLeod has played for Auburn and our reputation as developing good players, I suspect we are going to have many guys that P5s make a run at. If it is about money, there is no way we can keep any of them. Sure Joey is the guy and everyone wants him to stay, but we need all these guys to stay if we want to make a big run next year. I am hoping this team realizes what a great opportunity next year presents for us and they all decided to keep the band together and make a playoff run. But I know that is being too optimistic, even for myself.
What you are saying is mostly true. More than not - most players on G5 teams that get persuaded to move to P5 teams are just depth fillers. Take a look at the trend that's happening in the TP. A lot of "depth" fillers on P5's are moving to G5's to get a chance to play and G5's are moving up thinking they will start. Most will be "depth" fillers.

More than 1/2 the kids in the TP won't find a home and out of school most likely

I dislike the NIL as written today.

10 years from now it may be difficult to continue to being a fan of a program outside the top 40. Or we could just fast forward and adopt the 1-AA moniker again.

Until then I'll enjoy weekend like the upcoming one, beat Troy.
It's always been a matter of when, not if, that happens. I recall many that used this as their reasoning for the jump to FBS, so that when this does happen we aren't two rungs down.

Why would Joey leave? If Frank stays and he has another mega year, he will have every opportunity at the league. He may lose that if he leaves and doesn't transition as well as he did into App. App showed him loyalty and love when no one else did and he's now, seemingly, taken that Mountaineer spirit in.

With one year of eligibility and his performance this year, I can't see him leaving for a one year rental elsewhere. Success isn't guaranteed anywhere but at least he's shown he can do it in Boone. Chase got NFL looks and that should open the door for Joey come Spring 2025.

I heard thru a reliable source that JA and #90 DE are in the cross hairs of NIL money elsewhere.....
Fact of the matter is that they can get to the NFL from App just as easily as they can elsewhere. I get it's not just about that but success isn't guaranteed. McLeod had a few decent games for Auburn but is it something that going to get him on NFL radars? Probably not. He may have sacrificed tomorrow for today and I'd hope that these guys are able to see that.

I count six , seven maybe , that have the opportunity to cash out at the end of the season .It is the old double edged sword , we want good players and so do others. We can't compete dollar for dollar .Will other factors out weigh the dollars? In any event we will need to play the portal ourselves within our ability.

Coastal was able to hold onto Grayson McCall for three years of NIL and many of their talented players who could've left to go elsewhere. I'd hope App can do the same.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I tend to agree with you. My heart says JA stays but who know's. I don't think FP leaves. I really don't believe when he came back it was only for 1 year. (he is on a 2 year contract I think) If they can duplicate what is happening this year FP will still have many teams courting him.

I can't remember for sure but I think it was the Michigan/Ohio St game where the announcers said a defensive player was a transfer from Coastal

I know we all dislike the state of things and it would be nearly impossible to ever compete, but it’s not a pipe dream to have enough reserves to make the decision much harder.
How much do you think it would take to get a kid to choose us over someone that offered $250k?

This is depressing. BGP spent way too much time talking about this as well. I would rather talk about the Sun Belt Championship Game.

He tried... however there were other issues that required to stay. I hope our kids do not have those items.

It really is. It’s just the nature of the beast though and a very poignant example of “careful what you wish for.”

Very much so...It is what it is.

They will make a decision that's best for them and their family.
People make the decision that they THINK is best for them and their family. It might end up being the best or might not. Seen a lot of portal regret out there these days.

He’s going to attempt transferring again (just announced).

They did. They just lost Grayson McCall to the portal as well.

Actually, he only stayed because of academics. He could not transfer but would have. He graduated and now the classes not transferring are not as big of a deal. Also, keep in mind their NIL collective is folding so he is not going to stay. He knows he would not get drafted and he needs to make as much as he can now.

That’s a great question. I guess it comes down to wants and desires but I’d love to have a cash pool to offer the top players 50-100k in this spot. Obviously that’s very different than 250k but if a kid loves Boone, App State and is comfortable here, it could go a long way in making the decision to stay easier.

Obviously that’s a lot for us and would be impossible to offer every time but a rainy day fund we could dip into for these times would be great.
