That's true but it doesn't mean it's not a dumb rule. Let's not forget that we were looking for a waiver ourselves.appstate24 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2023 3:57 amAgreed, just like unc-cheat, “the rules shouldn’t apply to us.” Hang around the JMU fan base long enough, and you will get that same obnoxious sense of entitlement. JMU's defense is good...but Marshall has struggled on offense this year. With Ali out that hurt and the Marshall QB good when he has time, below average when he does not.

Hate to tell some of you fellers but if you go back in time- around the time of our transition years I'm pretty sure that you will find several posts discussing how App should have gotten a waiver to play in a bowl. If I'm not mistaken I think we had enough wins to (barely) qualify but we (and Stink) were denied.

We were 7-5 (that was the year of the terrible slow start and then the massive mid season improvement) and GaSo was 9-3, but undefeated in conference. We both still had to sit out.Bigdaddyg1 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2023 5:56 amHate to tell some of you fellers but if you go back in time- around the time of our transition years I'm pretty sure that you will find several posts discussing how App should have gotten a waiver to play in a bowl. I wanted a waiver then like most fans, and at first I was very against JMU getting a waiver this year, since we didn’t get one back then. But this is the second FBS year that JMU has looked great—we had our first year of post-season ineligibility while still playing an FCS schedule. They’ve done both of their years while also playing a full FBS schedule and killing it. I’d be in favor of a waiver for them, especially if they win out. I’ve come around.

It sucks to be JMU Dookies. They can't change rules just for them without forever changing it going forward.appstate24 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2023 3:57 amAgreed, just like unc-cheat, “the rules shouldn’t apply to us.” Hang around the JMU fan base long enough, and you will get that same obnoxious sense of entitlement. Re: Other Games 10/17-10/21
They should have been playing a FCS schedule last year in year one of the transition. The SBC did them a solid because the CAA was being the CAA. Still though, another case where they think the rules shouldn’t apply to them. Now, they want to change the rules. Again.
All that said, if the NCAA grants them some kind of waiver or if they outright change the rule, fine. Because the team is damn good. The fanbase, on the other hand, thinks they’re above the law.

It's really kind of amazing how much effort some schools and fan bases put into trying for their team to get an exhibition game in Montgomery in mid December in front of 22,000 people.
Anyone catch the shirt that Marshall fan was wearing last night? Camera caught it and very quickly the screen changed.

As to postseason play for transitioning teams, while JMU is very worthy and deserving based on their play, the Dukes, like everyone else, knew the deal when they signed up. I found it funny the commentators were moaning on and on about the “antiquated rule” when the home team was essentially responsible for the rule…the Marsha rule. It was put in place to keep teams from loading up on transfers as they made the jump when the FBS to FCS transfer rules applied. Obviously the rule needs to catch up to the transfer portal changes but it may likely stay as an added deterrent to the new $5m entry fee for programs looking to move.

While I agree that the rule is stupid and JMU (so far) deserves to play in the post season the rule is still in place. The NCAA can't just keep changing rules in mid season just because of a unique situation- even if this one is stupid. Agree, they knew the deal.

Re: Other Games 10/17-10/21
It's a silly and outdated rule, thought just as much when App moved up, although slightly different situation in terms of how they transitioned. However, thems is the rules.
If they give JMU a waiver, then they have to give one to Jacksonville State as well. They became bowl eligible on Tuesday.
Maybe the NCAA changes it after this year if JMU continues on with their success. Don't see how if JMU goes undefeated or even just loses 1 game that it doesn't garner enough attention from the sports world to possibly be changed. Problem is the NCAA is notorious for doing things how they want regardless of the logic and the rate at which teams jump the FBS they might feel isn't significant enough to warrant a change. Plus they will have the flip side arguments in that not every program will find success like JMU has in the past two years.

I'm guessing you have to encounter their fans more (as I do) than our NC alums.AppinVA wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2023 7:03 amThey should have been playing a FCS schedule last year in year one of the transition. Re: Other Games 10/17-10/21
I live 20 minutes from Harrisonburg. It's really the young/student fans that are the worst in this area. A few of the older donors and such get on a high horse occasionally, but don't hear too much from the older crew. However when I wear App State apparel into BWW or Macados the younger folks give me a hard time. Nothing malicious, but more so annoying.hapapp wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2023 1:08 pmI'm guessing you have encounter their fans more (as I do) than our NC alums.AppinVA wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2023 7:03 amThey should have been playing a FCS schedule last year in year one of the transition. Attended the JMU v.s. App basketball game up here last year, which occurred during winter break so basically no students. Had zero issues at all with any fans. I don't visit their message boards, so that might also be why my encounters aren't as bad.

The SBC board is reporting that the Marshall player that was injured last night looks like he will be okay.
