Off topic, but at a HS game currently. The opposing teams band plays during the middle of a play. How is that legal?
Not allowed in NCAA but not in NCHSAA Rule Book. Pound those drums!!!

There seems to be a lot of stories in the media on the NCHSAA's side of the story.... not too many on the other side. Media bias or no comment from them? There are ALWAYS three sides to a story. Each party's side and then the truth in the middle.

I don't know the answer - the legislature rarely explains anything they decide to do or not do -

The South Carolina legislature tried the same thing a few years back. Instead of taking over, which they realized would be a daunting task (that is, running high school athletics) an appellate panel was put in place so they could exert an influence on the issues.

Charlotte Catholic has been winning nchsaa championships for years
Indeed. Jim Oddo built a powerhouse there years ago. Only problem I see is that CCHS doesn't have district lines to deal with as do the public schools.

The Catholic and Charter schools play within the framework and rules set by the association so I don’t see the issue. There is a huge difference between parochial participating schools an those privates in the NCHSIAA.
This one seems obvious to me. The private schools have more money than the state schools. They can pay more for training/coaches/equipment/food. It is an unfair competition. It seems pretty easy to understand. One of the reasons I did not want Liberty in our conference. We have a different set of rules to follow than Liberty. I like the SBC because of the reasons above. We are playing with schools that have very similar problems/disadvantages that App State has. Including big brother syndrome in their states.

Private HS vs Public HS would/could be night and day differences in resources.

As NewApp states, “private schools do not have attendance lines,” so they can poach players from public schools anywhere. Thus lies the rub.

There is plenty of public school poaching…players just “move” inside the line.

They do have tuition to deal with, however. Most states deal with district lines by making private schools play up a division.

We think nothing of parents choosing a residence based on the assigned school district for academic reasons. What does it matter if the reason is athletic instead?

The vast majority of private schools are not like Cardinal Gibbons, Charlotte Catholic and the like. Most have less money than public schools and in turn pay their teachers less. There are a couple of private school sports leagues around the state. For every CCHS there are probably 8-10 smaller ones like Christian Family Academy.

Yes I do believe the 20 big ones across the state have unfair advantages but they also don't win it every year in every sport. It still takes great coaches and support to win a chip.

As far as the district lines are concerned, they try to be more serious about it these days but it still happens even at public schools. As far as my system knew my brother and I lived at my grandparents house until one year when we actually moved into the right district. I know it still happens.

I can’t speak for Gibbons or Bishop McGinnis but I know what CCHS teachers make and what they run the athletics budget on. It’s less than all Char-Meck schools. A single grass game field, tiny practice field, no baseball field or track.

CAAland, I get what you’re saying. But the athletic rule doesn’t allow it. Maybe the rule needs to be changed.
