Thank you! If anyone has more facts or can expand on what I said I would welcome it. I was typing that up quickly.Stonewall wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 1:33 pmAs someone who was involved , that's a pretty good summary , as I recall it anyway .I will say however that I hold no grudges against either one .I came to believe that they simply rose to their levels of incompetence and acted accordingly.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 11:55 amI will not argue the points about Cobb because he did those things and I felt mixed about his time at App but I am glad we got rid of Laney and that Cobb had the vision to go FBS.DenverOfTheEast wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 10:59 amMr Laney did not fire Coach Moore too soon and did hire Buzz Peterson the 1st time when he was motivated and actually good at coaching.....appgrad95&97 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 9:59 amWhen you've reached the "thank goodness for Roachel Laney" point...DenverOfTheEast wrote: ↑Sun Oct 08, 2023 8:29 amDean Smith - started coaching in 1961 - first NCAA championship 1982, it took him 6 years to make a post season tournament.
Nick Saban only has 2 undefeated seasons in his whole career, took him until his 10th football season to win a National Title.
Mack Brown has over 275 wins and only 1 National Title.
Jerry Moore stunk at Texas Tech (16-37-2 record) WOW!!!!!!!
From 1989-2004 he only finished 1st in the SoCon 2 times, T-1 once...... 15 years and only 3 1st place finishes.
Damn when you break down Jerry Moore's all time record, you clowns would fired him after year 6, but thank goodness Rachel Laney didn't jump the gun.
You never know when the break through is coming!!

The Cobber fired Moore, hired lazy recycled Buzz the 2nd time and promoted lazy incompetent Capel over McMahon.
Mr Laney > The Cobber.
Just a look back on AD comparisons and my common sense Roachel Laney support.
Some inside info and facts you probably don't know or else you would not praise Laney
Laney was not going to fire Moore because he did not want to make the program bigger. Laney held this program back for so long. He was quite happy with what App was doing. He told people App could not raise the money and we would be a losing program in I-A. We had a lot of people who were ready to move on from Moore for sure because we had underachieved like in 1995 and other years but we were still a winning program despite Laney not giving Moore all that he needed. Laney also made a lot of enemies and was the reason our attendance and giving were down.
Bork never thought App could go I-A and put his buddy Laney in place because he did not want to either. They wanted App to be small time. Bork actually told people who argued that App should go I-A that he did not have an AD that could do it and was happy where we were. Laney told many people he did not want the YC to give more than 1M a year because he did not want boosters to have any power. I was among those who literally heard Laney tell that to people. He came from a D2 program had small time mindset and wanted App to be small time. He was not capable nor had the desire to help App move up.
We never had anyone in power within the NC Board of Governors who could fire Borkowski or Laney until finally in 2004 we had 2 alumni, Wilson and Adcock, who had big dreams for App State and were in position to make a change. They went to him and told him what they wanted. Bork told them he did not have an AD who could make that move and they basically said "you are right and that is why we are making changes". So they fired Bork with cause because he was an alcoholic and interviewed a few people. When they talked to Peacock he told the he wanted to make App as big as it could be and that he would do what they wanted. They instructed him to fire Laney and get an AD who has the same dreams they do. They told him we want to be I-A.
So back in 2004, Ken told Roachel he could resign or be fired because he was making a change. Jerry Moore had gone 6-5 in 2004 and Ken did not want to rush and fire him since the offense changed and wanted to see how the program was being run. Ken was not a football guy but he understand the impact and quickly made the changes in the program to help give Moore all he could so whatever happened in 2005 would be fair to Jerry and the program. He jokingly told people that Moore need to win the title to save his job but I think in reality as long as we made playoffs and got past first round he was going to keep Moore.
A couple things about Moore that you also likely don't know. The reason he was forced to step down is because Peacock and Cobb wanted to go FBS and he did not. He also wanted his son to be named head coach instead of Satt.
Jerry was smart to listen to Satt and others. Back in 2004 when we went to Wyoming and got blown out he wanted to change the offense back but was convinced to give it a few weeks. It was the best decision he ever made and he had to be talked into it. Jerry was not the one who pushed making those decisions.
Gerald Adams told myself and many others that giving to the YC doubled or tripled, I don't remember exactly, within a week or two of Laney resigning. In fact, go back and look at attendance in 2004 and 2005 and you will see that him stepping down saw an immediate rise in attendance and donations. Attendance was up from game one that year before it even appeared we could win the title. Those are actual facts.
App should have gone I-A with ECU when the split happened and set themselves back a long time with Laney and Borkowski. I am glad that Jerry did not veto what the assistants wanted and that he embraced change. It saved his job and allowed us to have some consistency in coaching, along with the other variables, that won that title in 2005. The rest after that is history.
Laney did some really bad things to some folks that I know and I have a story with him that I will not share but I know it was his incompetence and small time thinking that caused it. They definitely weren't competent enough to orchestrate a move up. I know for a fact that if not for Wilson and Adcock we did not have anyone else with this vision and the juice to make the change happen. The UNC grads on the board of governors who had the power before them were more than happy to keep Laney in position. I'm just glad it all worked out.
