You have 4 QBs on scholarship for next year as of today. Plus you have PWOs that have been in the system. With a finite number of scholarships available, you can’t use them to stockpile a position where only one plays at a time.311neers wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 3:50 pmWe do pursue transfer portal guys to an extent-was unaware about the strenuous transfer rules we have in place as a University. If we feel there are App character guys, who can make us a better team, and get accepted with the transfer rules, we most certainly should offer those kids. If the coaches feel there is a better qb in the portal and he fits the App mold and can get accepted, they might offer him. Not saying it's going to happen, sounds like Burger is the guy according to you and those within the program. QB competition never hurt anyone!AppStateNews wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 3:39 pmWait.. In another thread you were convinced we don't even pursue transfer portal guys but we need to go after every single one. Now all of a sudden you're convinced we will offer several QBs?311neers wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 8:49 amThere are always going to be a ton of QB's in the portal. There are 300+ qbs on D1 rosters for 100 starting spots. If the coaches feel that there is a better QB option in the portal, and said kid can get into app and wants to play for app, they will offer him a spot. (Ex- Chase Brice). Burger can still win the job from a transfer. QB competition doesn't hurt, just ask Kirby Smart. It does suck that Burger has spent his time and waited his turn and we can just go to the portal to find someone, but that's todays age of CFB. I say bring someone in and let them compete! If Burger wins it, lets ride with him!AppState89 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 14, 2022 4:47 pmIf we bring in an experienced QB via the portal, we will still have inexperienced QB the next year. If we continue to bring in QBs via the portal the soph then junior QB will still be inexperienced. I say play him next year as the starter and bring in a QB as backup. Just my opinion./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 14, 2022 4:29 pm
I agree, but do the coaches?
Huesman had way more experience than the current back ups, yet they still went after Brice in the portal. Circumstances may have been different then, and maybe at some point they thought ZT would have returned before he decided not to, but the mindset was still there at the time to hit the portal. Does SC want that seat getting warmer with a young inexperienced QB?

Re: Four losses by a combined 20 points
I'm sure someone can dig out this answer. Have we ever gotten down to QB3 for real important playing time during any season in recent memory? That would have meant that QB1 and 2 both got hurt. Also has anyone 3rd on the depth chart ever become the full time starter during his time at App (maybe was 3rd as a freshman or sophomore then became the starter)? I realize you have to stockpile at certain positions (so to speak) but realistically what are the chances our currently ranked number 3 or 4 ever plays here? We have a number 2 and maybe 2a now who could take the job next year. If we go to the portal for another CB or even a solid backup those other guys have zero chance.

If I remember correctly, back in the day - early 2000s - we had a 3rd or 4th string QB start and play an entire game at WCU - had a great day if I remember ---

Logan Hallock in 2012. Don't know if he still holds the single game completion percentage record at App, but I would assume he would. He was 20 of 21 that day. His only incompletion was his last attempt.

I believe I remember that as well. Was that a product of necessity due to injuries or did we just let him start? Those situations are rare though.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Tue Nov 15, 2022 4:51 pmLogan Hallock in 2012. I hope you’re wrong but I fear you’re not. This killed college basketball for me. Hate that you don’t get to see a team grow together. I sincerely hope we can find a way to have guys come in, stay and grow together.

It will be interesting to see which App players hit the Portal this offseason.
Which ones decide they'll look elsewhere because they want more game snaps?
Which ones will get the long face from the coaches at the season end interviews?

Re: Four losses by a combined 20 points
Seems like in the late 90's we had a QB injury situation also, but I'm not sure if it got down to QB3. I could be remembering incorrectly.
I would say the primary importance of QB3 is that, if QB1 is injured and QB2 has to start, having a legit QB3 allows him to play less conservatively. If he has to "protect" himself and take no risks, his functionality is limited.

Teams will add new players and lose others every year, but you won't be rebuilding your whole roster each season. I'd venture to say that most players who transfer away were not good fits for a team anyway. As for the basketball comparison, the "one-and-done" rule is going away, and a lot of teams have been shying away from those types of players as well. A lot of the teams that are considered real title contenders are junior and senior heavy. While one-and-dones and transferred have changed a lot of things about college sports, nothing beats building a team through time and work together.

True, although it was easy pickings. Western was at one of its downward slope points.
