Put a military grade GPS in the ball and a laser sight is not needed. A garage door safety light would get the job done.

It would still have to align perpendicularly to the field, otherwise it could be angled in such a way that the “frist” down is given/not given. Again, easy fix (another laser that runs parallel to the sideline for alignment.
