Conferences cancelling out of conference games isn't to reduce travel.

The main goal is to buy about a months worth of time before making the final decision whether a fall football season will take place. Before the start of the season, a 6 week practice period is allowed. With games originally starting in late August/ early September, the start of that 6 weeks was coming up basically next week or so. By getting rid of the out of conference games (which can be between 3-4 depending on conference) you shift the start of the season to October and the start of the 6 week training period moves to mid August, allowing the decision makers to kick the can a bit longer.

You're correct of course; but for a lot of teams this is the most dreaded (but really expected) news they could receive about getting college football underway for 2020.

Another element, should they stay with the fall time table, is that it allows them to move games around if a team is hit hard with the virus. 8 games in a 13 week period allows some flexibility.

On a serious note, we are going to be lucky if there are any games (not just OOC). This is an attempt to move things back in hopes something will break or a vaccine can effectively be instituted. Just not seeing it.

I'll go with the answers that prioritize health and wellbeing over business and profits, just to keep it simple.

That’s a cop out answer at this point, because every bit of it is completely intertwined. It’s not necessarily prioritizing business and profits when you look at it from a “being able to provide for your family and provide an education to children” perspective. Not to mention the increased rates of suicide and domestic violence that have spiked over the last 4 months.

This isn’t a singular issue, it is the entirety of society.

Well, it shouldn't have been intertwined, but it is now because enough people didn't take it seriously once Memorial Day happened and a lot of people were rushed to reopen everything. We're now faced with more difficult decisions in July because of the ignorance in March, April, May and June.

The tough answers are a rabbit hole or sacrifices that in the end is reliant on government protecting its citizens for a longer period of time. And right as deferrance periods are ending.

Overall, in the grand scheme of things, my point was that we should push pause on college football and putting young people out there to make sure schools get millions of dollars is not the course of action we need to take.

Unfortunately, while "pushing pause" on college football is probably going to be necessary, it won't help any more than quarantining did if we do little in the meantime to actually slow the infection rate. The virus will still be there whenever we try to play games again (unless/until there's a vaccine, of course).

I was just reading something about this point today: It's not so much that states reopened too soon, it's that when they did, they reopened dumb stuff like bars, and kept masks optional (while certain people decided to make them a culture war fight), and didn't have enough test/trace capability, etc. And there's little reason to expect our response to improve in 2020, IMO.

Well, actually there has been a significant change that very few are aware of. I stumbled across this video from a government meeting in Texas in May. They are discussing changes to the counting methodology of COVID 19 cases in Texas. They also spend a significant amount of time expressing their concerns. If you go back and look at the daily case charts, this is about the same time that the cases began to spike. Also, remember that Dr. Fauci said in his Congressional testimony that he expected the daily cases to be as high as 100,000. Most people scoffed at that statement. We are now certainly headed in that direction. Anyway, the part about COVID19 begins around the 15 minute mark and lasts about 30 minutes. You don't have to watch the whole video. I think that the one thing that is evident about this whole scenario is that there is no truth to be found anywhere from anybody.
