Which was more telling of our coach, the win at home againts Chattanooga, where we "put it all together" in our final game OOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR, the loss at home to a 6 win Citadel a week and a half earlier? Who wants to debate that?

Neither is more telling. Optimists will tend to point to Chattanooga and pessimists will tend to point to Citadel.

I think everyone will agree that that's symptomatic of our team this year. We could very easily get blown out against our opponent on Saturday. No one is promoting Capel for coach of the year.Seattleapp wrote:Which was more telling of our coach, the win at home againts Chattanooga, where we "put it all together" in our final game OOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR, the loss at home to a 6 win Citadel a week and a half earlier? KGFish,
I'll let that slide because you don't know me. However, as a very supportive alum and member of the APP family, I resent being called a bad fan for presenting an opinion with which you disagree. If having high expectations and wanting a basketball program of which we can be proud and students will want to support means that I am a bad fan, so be it.
GO APPS!

I wonder if we could get a sarcasm font on here. It would make posts like that so much easier to get.

OK, here goes.... Our guys played great Saturday beating the UTC Mocs! We shot the ball GREAT! We rebounded GREAT! We only turned it over 7 times. We shot 74% from the ff line! Forget they are a terrible team with a terrible RPI, we came out on fire and smoked those guys! Feel better?hapapp wrote:Kgfish wrote:That is one the most ridiculous things I've seen. Sorry I spoiled the feel good moment of the year with the truth. Tell me how facing the facts and calling it like it is get translated into not pulling for the team to do well and wishing the worst for the program? Because some of us don't relate beating a horrible team into a great accomplishment you take it upon yourself to label us as bad fans? You've got a lot of gall dude.hapapp wrote:Kgfish wrote:That sounds pretty good until you realize how bad the conference actually is. Pretty sad when a team that is 10-18 vs DI opposition gets a tournament bye. Whew boy just lookie at the conference competition we blasted. None of the 8 teams below us had a winning record and were a combined 54-90 in the conference, 71-157 overall. Some of you guys can continue to try and make chicken salad out of chicken $%#@ while the rest of us will focus on reality.AppAttack wrote:We finished 4th out of 12... from listening to this crowd all year, you'd think we finished 12th.
Regardless of "reality", there are a few of us who will be pulling for ASU to do their best while some of you folks continue to hope for the worst out of the current staff and players. No one that I read on this board is under any illusion that ASU is likely going to advance past the first game, if that. But, some folks try to highlight the positives when they occur. Others find it impossible to say anything positive and instead find every reason to put this team down and apparently relish in their failings.
One of the most ridiculous things I've seen is someone posting on the heels of the best performance of the season to denigrate the performance by qualifying the win by pointing out how bad the opponent was and how poor they were from the foul line. Not one word about how well we shot the ball, how well we played defense, or the level of intensity the team brought to the game. That takes gall. Obviously, I hit a sore spot.
I don't deny the "facts." There are problems in the program, you have identified them. I was at the Davidson game, I was disgusted, disappointed, embarrassed, and demoralized. It just seemed that Saturday went against the meme that has attached to this team. You seemed unwillingly to acknowledge it for that day. Or to comment that if we had seen that play all year, we might be looking at totally different end to the season.
Saturday didn't cure any ills. It didn't automatically change the character of this team. It doesn't guarantee deep tournament run. But, it did show what this team is capable of accomplishing.
I had the misfortune of being at the Davidson game too. Left with 10 minutes to play down by 36. Yes it was embarrassing but I can accept getting blown out by a good Davidson team much better than going OT to beat a bad Samford team.

I was thinking the same thing about the font. We have one on one of the Panthers boards and it's about all I use.GlassOnion wrote:That would probably be my base font. That and the coffee drinking smiley.firemoose wrote:Beat me to it.

But he could kick a chair out onto the court with the best of them.Watauga72 wrote:Having lived through the Press Maravich year, I am willing to give Capel another year to become a good coach. IIRC, ASU won 3 games when Maravich was coach. He did, however, have the team with the hardest to spell names....Nananovich, Vucosovich, Milosovich...see the trend here? A bunch of sons of vichs! We were short, but we were slow.

Re: The Case to keep Capel one more year
For those of you who think we're going to lose in the first round, I will say that Samford and Furman are the two shallowest teams in this conference. Samford only does a 7-man roation and Furman has an active roster of 8. That should play heavily in our favor. So really, there's little to no excuse to lose that game.
And back to the original topic, I will say Neal would be a better fit at shooting guard if Graham and Burgess can run the point. Him and Tab can fight for that spot and perhaps light a fire under both players. They have each been frustrating to watch this year, moreso Neal in the last couple of weeks. If I ever see Neal dribble it off his foot into the sideline again, it'll be too soon. I'm glad Capel started Burgess over him the last two games, which I can't believe i'm saying. Remember when Neal was declared ineligible everyone thought it was doom and gloom because of how awful Burgess was? Well the tables have turned big time now. Burgess is the most improved player this year by far and is a better PG than Tab or Mike Neal. If Graham is the real deal, then I like the outlook of next year with who is currently coming back, which will amp up the pressure on Capel to deliver. It's a win-win for everyone on both sides of the Capel debate. If he wins, then great. If he doesn't, then he's done.
