No. You can comment on a fan base and not use broad strokes in the process. Your comments seemed to lump all UNC fans into one category. Using phrases like some, not all, and at times, would allow for a statement without generalizing, like you just did with your Southern comment. Every Southern fan is a jerk, generalization. Not every Southern fan is a jerk, truth.

Complain all you want about UNC fans, but every fan base complains about calls against them, every fan base leaves early in a blowout, every fan base have those obnoxious fans who give them a bad rep. At the end of the day, I'd rather be a UNC fan then state or dook as they hold the head to head over both of them and have more championships in about every category over both of them. Football and Basketball.

Not every school has decades of academic fraud. I'd rather go to a school that follows the rules and loses than one that cheats and wins.

The "wine and cheese" thing comes from football too. The only Carolina grads I know who actually attend football games post pictures of their tailgate: folks standing around a single picnic table wearing argyle and drinking wine. There's even a Chihuahua with a blue argyle sweater of his own.

"Wine and cheese" was coined by Sam Cassell, whippersnapper. No argument with applying it to football too, though.

No, not really. I just felt inclined to comment on what appeared to be a negative general statement. I would have done if it was about UNC, ECU, or State fans.

After what has come out about unc the ability to make that statement just about sums up what a carolina fan is all about.

I have attended numerous games at Kenan and the DeanDome over the years and I have really never seen any big problems. I still say they have the worst fans in the country but not because of their actions toward their opponents - (Unlike GaSo where I have been once and will never go back) - No, the Carolina fans are the worst because they turn on their own players and coaches, they leave when the team gets behind, they want Roy fired every time he loses to Duke, they don't support their team thru thick and thin, and honestly, most don't really know the rules of the sport they watch - There has NEVER been a foul committed by a hole player at the dome - NEVER --- they boo the refs even when their team commits intentional fouls --- One quick example, I was at a game, don't even remember who they were playing - Any way the opponent drove to the basket and made the shot - a foul was called on unc and the guy next to me went nuts, screaming at the ref, etc., As it was, the foul occurred before the shot so the basket didn't count and the opponent just got the ball out of bounds. I said to the guy, "You do realize if the ref hadn't blown his whistle the other team would now have 2 more points?" - he replied with, I don't give a damn, that was a terrible call ---

There are a lot of generalizations in this statement. Every fan base out there has this element. Do you remember the fire Satt group half way through his second season? There is a guy that sits behind me at KBS. Sounds a lot like the guy you described in Chapel Hill. I'm not defending their fans, I just don't think they should be judged as a whole based on a few experiences.

These might be generalizations for you but I have attended well over 50 sporting events at unc for at least 40 years including games at Carmichael (which really was a home court advantage) --- my opinion isn't based on a couple of games and it would take numerous pages to tell all the stories - but you are most certainly entitled to your opinions ---

If those were not generalizations, then you are claiming that in your 40 years of UNC games, every single fan you've encountered fits your description. I find that hard to believe. Not all UNC fans behave in this fashion.

That's true, they have their large share of Walmart fans that act nothing like that at all.

Let him who is w/out sin cast the first stone. I seem to remember plenty of games last year where the stands at Kidd Brewer were embarrassingly empty. Also, have you ever tuned into an App bball game? We average all of like 500 fans per game. Our only fans are seats...

Appdoggy, I take moderate objection to you and Butch1991 for throwing off on men's basketball attendance. The comments of "no one there" and "We average all of like 500 fans per game." are simply not true. Through last weekend's games, our team is averaging 1,252 per game. It's true that the optics are less than awe-inspiring in an arena seating 8,800+, but for the basketball program rebuilding's sake please don't make it worse than it is. Jim Fox is building a program--the right way. Let's not make his job harder with "off-target and off-the-wall" comments that have been and will be read by potential ticket-buying fans. Defeatism is exactly what Fox is trying to eliminate.

I am an ABC'er. The last time I went to a game in Chapel Hill I was far more obnoxious, yet only in a way that yelled Hole when they yelled heel, than any other person I came across that day.

Saying that UNC fans are docile isn't a statement to sweep over the fact that you are a closet fan, only that you recognize the wine and design parties are on all of their minds for their plans after the game.

Kind of sounds like us when a penalty is called in football. Most fans don't believe their teams commit fouls or penalties. Doesn't matter the school or the sport. I hear a lot of foul stuff in the stadium when the penalty is on App. We don't object in basketball since no one is at our games to complain.

The penalty on Meadors on the edge was BS considering the Miami receivers were blocking and holding outside the shoulder pads on every screen.

Stereotypes exist because there are people who live down to them. I believe it's fairly safe to say that most of us have encountered the oxymoronic CHeat fanbase stereotypes of Wal-Marters and Wine & Cheese preppies. Those stick and are funny because there is some level of truth in them. Do they represent every CHeat fan? No more than me being asked if I wore Birkenstocks with wool socks by CHeaters, Dookies, or EZU drunks that discover I went to App State.




By the way, yes I did wear wool socks with my Birkenstocks in Boone . . . in January . . . Hell I think I wore them across Boone in March of 1993 when there was 50+ inches of snow on the ground. Mountaineer through and through!
