BOONE, N.C. –– An offensive onslaught steered Appalachian State University men’s basketball toward a decisive 116-57 win over Montreal College on Sunday afternoon inside the Holmes Center.
Trailing 5-0 in the early going, the Mountaineers (3-5) engineered a 17-1 run which was ignited by a Kelvin Robinson layup and capped by an emphatic Tyrell Johnson slam dunk.
That run by App State would lead the Black and Gold to its second 60-point half of the season and lead the Cavaliers (9-2) by 30 points, 61-31, at the break.
The Apps continued their dominance in the second period with another 50-point half - posting 55 points en route to the 59 point victory. The Mountaineers shot 60.6 percent from the floor - the best mark the program has posted since shooting 67.4 percent against Stephen F. Austin last season.
Six Mountaineers posted double-figures on Sunday, setting a season-high, with Ronshad Shabazz led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Griffin Kinney finished with 11, while Matt O’Boyle (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain/Pima Community College), Bennett Holley, Craig Hinton and Isaac Johnson all finished with 10 points a piece.
The point totals for O’Boyle and Hinton were both career highs. Jake Wilson posted a team-high seven rebounds and six blocks off the bench.
The Mountaineers posted a season-high 30 assists and were led by Patrick Good who tallied six on the afternoon. App State’s 12 steals was the second highest total in a game this season.
Appalachian will return to the court on Thursday, Dec. 15 when they travel to in-state non-conference foe NC State for a clash on ESPNU. Tip time is slated for 7 p.m.

Re: We finally routed someone, albeit Montreat.
honestly, we've beaten every team that we should beat, other than Western. We beat Warren Wilson by 70, Montreat by 60, and beat Hartford at their place in a very unbalanced scoring effort, with Shabazz going for 28. Hopefully the WCU game was an anomaly. While it would be nice to knock off Davidson, Tennessee, uncc, or NC State, we wouldn't be expected to win those games. We can only hope that these games have been nice tune ups/wake up calls for conference play. It looks like the Sun Belt might have several quality teams at the top this year, judging from early season play.

I didn't know we "played" them until I was just checking scores of games. I then looked for the thread in the basketball section- none. Montreat? So obscure that autocorrect changed it to Montreal.

Also saw that we had a "crowd" of less than 700 fans in attendance. Ouch!

January 17? Are you serious? Just got one kid out of school and have 5 years until our last 2 go. The amount of actual "school days" for college students baffles me. So some App students are off for well over a month? That is unreal.AppDawg wrote:Students are on break until January 17th. Yes, you read that right, freaking January 17th! They should all go to Montgomery with a break like that.
