Towels/PomPoms/Other Crowd Stuff

Unread post by GastonApp09 » Tue Sep 20, 2016 3:38 pm

Looking around college football and pro sports, there are many different things that teams claim as "theirs" in terms of crowd traditions. I'm talking about Steelers (terrible towels), Mississippi State (Cowbells), etc. It seems like across the board, more pro teams use the idea of the "rally towel" while more college teams use the pompoms or "thunder sticks." I love the way these things seem to bring a fan base together on gameday and provide an extra spark to get loud and cheer teams on.

To get to the point, I LOVED the yellow pompoms against Miami the other day. It looked great live and looked fantastic on TV when we were actually involved in the game. Just curious as to if the rest of you enjoyed it and if we think we could ever establish something other than the "3 for dale" when the bell tolls on 3rd down.

The pom poms looked good I think. I like them fine, but I prefer the towels for the simple reason that I can use it afterwards. I have several App "game day" towels that get used as gym towels and carried to games in case of rain (drying the seat) or spills. Just more practical since I rarely use pom poms at home. :-)

I tried to go back and watch on ESPN3, but never good get a good enough quality replay to get a feel for how it looked.

I thought the pom poms were great. Pretty much everyone was participating with them, other than some older season ticket holders near me.

I think they are referring to the bells on 3rd down, which come from the intro to AC/DC's "Hell's Bells".

Now whether they are referring to Dale Earnhardt or Dale Jones as far as the "3 for Dale" I do not know.

I also loved the pom-poms but I would be okay with towels too, we just need to continue doing it and establish the tradition.

Just hate that I believe towels/pom-poms/thundersticks make it look better, but the crowd is usually quieter.

If our anemic offense doesn't wake up and our d does not fit better on back end, we may need the towels for crying. :(

I figured on the third down portion of it. Dale was throwing me off. If its Dale Earnhardt, I can tell you have not done anything ever for him. :D And I live in Kannapolis

Section 212 was either forgotten or robbed of most of their pom poms. We saw them everywhere but in our section and I was in the stadium by 11:00.

We need to find some place that can make faux Black and Gold coonskin hats. Imagine the sight if the entire student section in the end zone were whipping those around during a field goal attempt.

By "3 for Dale" I simply meant everyone in the student section/most other people holding up 3 fingers in the air. I've never seen another school do that and I have been to college games around the nation. I feel that is something pretty unique for us! I just didn't know what to call it!

Somebody had a hell of a mess to clean up on Sunday. I rode by the stadium on the way out and there were 30K pompoms all over the ground. My guess is if the guy that had to clean that up has a say you won't see them again. Kids were tearing them up and throwing the pieces in the air in my section. It was a nice touch though. Student section looked cool early when we were into the game.

SOME OF YOU WITH POOR TASTE FOR MUSIC MIGHT LIKE THAT DUMBASS SONG BUT LET ME REMIND YOU THAT ITS MONTANAS SONG AND I HAVE A BAD MEMORY OF THAT SONG IN MISSOULA...SO PLEASE...AGAIN YOU MORON....STOP PLAYING IT!!!!!

Cotton Eyed Joe is Montana's song period. Heard it every 10 seconds the two times I was in Missoula.
