Re: Roster Updates
mtd: Not sure exactly what you are referring to. First off I'm always on the 24/7 site. And Scout, Rivals, NCSA, hudl, MaxPreps, ESPN, etc, etc. Pretty much all day and most of the night. And we do have a recruiting section on this site where that info is available.
As to the list do you see any DT/NG's on it? That is what I was referring to in my previous post. The only DE we've got committed that is considered a possible move to NG is Pate. We offered 17+ DT/NG's last year and didn't sign one. And none so far this year. Long way to go but several targets have dropped off the list already. No doubt we've had a good class to this point but given that our defense starts and ends with the nose and that after this season we'll have only two NG's with experience (as it stands right now in camp) with Stout and Barrett, we have a ways to go. Hopefully we'll be able to move a couple into the position but no DL's we have on the roster as it stands now can get to the 300+ lb range (Hunter would be the closest but they don't won't to lose his quickness by adding 35+ lbs to his frame so he will more than likely be in the same range as Stout) and unless we find someone to sign in this class the only 300+ we'll have going forward is Barrett unless we move someone from the OL. Again a long way to go until Feb but the committable target list is a lot smaller now than it was when we started.

Re: Roster Updates
All 4 of the OL PWO's have potential at some position. And Appling is a center so that's a big area of need. As for Wright he has ability but will need some work. No surprise with a PWO. His hudl package is in the previous post where I added them so you can check it out. We'll see what happens to all of these guys now that they are here and SC and Mike get to work with them.MtnDevil95 wrote:Logan Wright sure seems to have the measurements to be a beast on the O-Line, any report that he has the skill and footwork to go along with all that mass?

Re: Roster Updates
Been holding off on this for a little while waiting for appstatesports to update and move to the new 2017-1018 roster. It hasn't happened yet although they did start it with our signees from yesterday. But the last full roster is still 16'-17' and it still has all the guys that graduated on it. I'm still checking every couple of days and will do more when the new one is posted but I do have some updates, including a couple of scholarship players that have left (why I keep saying that the number is ever changing).
First off. Word is that Latrell Gibbs is now in good standing with App again and will return for Summer session. No more details but he can come back and I'm being told he will be back then.
Now for the updates. Some of these were removed or added a while ago since I started this list back after Fall camp. I've been adding or removing all season long but most were walk on players so I didn't post them. I was waiting for spring ball to see if any would return, especially the walk on guys, as happens a lot of times. But with two scholarship players now gone I decided to go ahead and put this up.
And FYI, all of these are listed on the .edu site for this semester.
Added:
39 Kirkpatrick, Miller LB 6-0 180 Fr. South Granite (South Caldwell)
88 Watkins, T.J. WR 6-1 165 Fr. Forest City, N.C. (East Rutherford) Played this season. Not sure class year as he's listed as a JR on the .edu site.

4 Barbour, Jaylan WR 5-10 180 So. Monroe, N.C. (Monroe)*
Obviously the two scholarship players I'm referring to are Alex Taylor and Jaylan Barbour.
Word is that Taylor has decided not to play football anymore and is transferring to a Charleston area school (either Southern or CoC) to play basketball. I already know what some are thinking. Why not play basketball here? Not many 6' 9" 300 lbs guys in the Belt. Two reasons. One a guess and one a fact. Fact is we don't currently have a scholarship for next season. We only have one Sr and we're bringing in F Hunter Seacat (already in school and will be eligible next Jan). And without attrition we don't have a spot. But the guess, and if true the bigger reason, is that he wants to go back home. He's from Moncks Corner, as seen above, and anyone familiar with the area knows it's only a few miles from Charleston.
Jaylan Barbour has left the team as well. Word is he's in good standing but just feels like he wants more playing time. He hasn't seen the field much anyway and has had to deal with several injuries. And given that we have several slot guys coming up, especially Virgil and Evans (who will be splitting time at both RB and slot WR), and with Lewis playing better and Hopkins also, maybe the footsteps were getting louder. Regardless I wish him the best and hope he lands somewhere that he fits in better.

Re: Roster Updates
Great updates. Kind of funny with Taylor and hoops. When we signed him I had raised the idea of him playing basketball at App. Maybe he should have gone that direction. Many of us said "wow" when we saw the signing of a potential mountain at tackle. It seems that that more often than not the really tall O linemen don't typically make it. Guys that big must just be too slow out of the block and have to rely on being a motor grader. Also tough for a 6' QB to see over them. Good luck Alex.firemoose wrote:Been holding off on this for a little while waiting for appstatesports to update and move to the new 2017-1018 roster. Too bad for Barbour but we just have too much depth. Kind of amazing that a program like ours loses kids like him who want more PT but an Alabama hangs onto 4 star guys who might never play.

Re: Roster Updates
One thing I forgot to add. Harkenss is still doing things with the team and is on a medical hardship scholarship. He'll finish out and graduate from App. But he doesn't count towards our 85. They had left him on the roster for a while but took him off at the start of last season.
Taylor was a project from the start. Great young man but he had only played football for a couple of years. Played more BBall. And Led took a flyer on him as we needed another lineman in that class. Just didn't work out.
P5 Big Eyes on those others you mentioned. As we've seen just recently, many will go to a P5, any P5, just because. And those P5's will recruit right over them starting right now. Many of those could be 4 year players at our level. And some will walk on to a P5 just for the chance. But for every Hunter Renfrow there are dozens that never see the field and wind up transferring down to FCS or lower to play, or never play again.
I don't know how many remember DB Kielan Whitner? Flipped on us 3 days before signing day to Syracuse in the 15' class. Had a good freshman season but was recruited over in the next class and that next class passed him on the depth chart halfway through his So season last year. He'll be lucky to be on Special Teams here on out. And I already talked about Deshaywn Middleton. This stuff happens all the time and you can bet I'll be watching Daniels, Clapp, Pate, and Bostick, just for curiosity.

Re: Roster Updates
I always felt Taylor was a boom-or-bust type recruit. I know a lot of people were excited about his size. Now I don't know much about playing OL, but I figured, if being 6'9" were such an advantage for an offensive lineman, then why do you never see any 6'9" offensive linemen?

Re: Roster Updates
Yet another "top 20 recruit" based on ratings that didn't play or left early due to lack of playing time. By my count that is 7 of 20 that didn't make it here. Just shows how unrealible those ratings are at the G5 level.

Re: Roster Updates
Alanmichael seems like a great guy based on what I've seen. He joined us for the end of year Yosef board dinner and shared some good insights and ideas. I'm truly saddened that he won't get to play football again. I know he'll do well if he keeps polishing his marketing skills.

I spoke to Taylor's about about aunt in Summerville a couple of months ago (she saw an App sticker on my car) and she said he was real happy there. Probably just did want to get home.

Re: Roster Updates
2015 was a swing and miss at Oline. We got the stud Victor Johnson but hit some real duds in Bo Alexander, Tyler Norris and now Alex Taylor. We signed 4 OLinemen. Only 1 is left. The 2015 recruiting class overall, minus the JuCo guys, has not really panned out. I think we signed 21 and only 15 or so are still on campus. I know it is still early and a lot of those guys are young so maybe that changes.

Thank for this, firemoose. Gibbs coming back is HUGE for our defense next season. With him and Duck starting and the depth we've built up there... doubt many Sun Belt QB's will be tossing it all over the place on us!firemoose wrote:Been holding off on this for a little while waiting for appstatesports to update and move to the new 2017-1018 roster. The OL attrition from that class has definitely hurt. But overall, there's already a lot of good from that class:ASU_MBA wrote:2015 was a swing and miss at Oline. - Three of the four jucos have been all-conference (Mondo, Sims, Dez Reed).
- Vic Johnson and Michael Rubino are already successful starters.
- Des Franklin, Josh Thomas, Akeem Davis, Devin Papenheim, Tae Hayes, Anthony Flory and Collin Reed at least cracked the 2-deep by their second year, and several have started games.
- Mock Adams got his feet wet last year and still has great potential, and Zi Letman showed flashes and still has one more year.
There are a few other guys entering their RS sophomore seasons who will get more of a chance to show what they can do this year. I think overall 2015 will go down as a very good class; we've just had bad luck with the OL and a few other key players bailing on us.

I'm not totally convinced Gibbs will start. He will miss Spring ball and won't be on campus until summer. I guarantee he will have a fight on his hands.AppAlum12 wrote:Thank for this, firemoose. Re: Roster Updates
If he doesn't start it's either because he's rusty/out of shape or because the coaches want to send him a message (either of which could well happen). The guy we last saw in 2015 would be the best corner on our roster.hapapp wrote:
I'm not totally convinced Gibbs will start. He will miss Spring ball and won't be on campus until summer. I guarantee he will have a fight on his hands.

Re: Roster Updates
Is Clifton Duck a corner? If so then Mr. Gibbs will be the second best corner on the roster. If Duck plays safety the Gibbs will be our best corner.

Duck's a corner, and a very good one. But Gibbs is better IMO.appfanjj wrote:Is Clifton Duck a corner? If so then Mr. Gibbs will be the second best corner on the roster. If Duck plays safety the Gibbs will be our best corner.
Either way, a killer duo.

Re: Roster Updates
We will be strong in the secondary. Hope Gibbs has his act together and is ready to get down to the business of academics and football.
