They also use no (very few) woodwinds. All brass and percussion and no flags (which I appreciate) It is very hard for our band to get that "ballsey" sound with soooooo many clarinets, flutes (piccolos) and saxophones!!! They were first class!

There are many of the top ranked drum and bugle corps in the area of OU. I'm sure many of their members march DCI. We only have Carolina Crown and Spirit of Atlanta in this area. Not sure how many of our Marching Mountaineers are in either of these.

My son marched Spirit Of Atlanta for two seasons. Made finals in his first year. This summer he will likely march for the Boston Crusaders. He was a two year Sousaphone player for App and was drum major this year and last year. App has a few members in DCI.

My son marched Spirt when it was at JSU. I think they made finals his first of 3 years. His melophone section won I&E with Barber of Seville. I love DCI!

My son told me that the Ohio band practices 2 hours every day. Ten hours per week.

Are you familiar with JSU's Marching Southerners? It is a class that meets during the Fall for 2 hours every day. Also, a lot of the 450 members are music majors on full scholarship. Tgey give more band scholarships than football. When my son marched Spirit, The Southerners director was Spirits director. I think our band does awesome for the amount they practice. When they tried to recruit my son, they only practiced a few hours a week, not sure if it's still the same.

I have seen JSU on YouTube, but never in person. I'm sure they Blow you away live.
Nothing is better than standing right in front of a horn line when they are warming up for a show!
Sounds like the practice hours are the same now at App. I've enjoyed watching the Marching Mountaineers these last 4 years.

The Southerners do blow you away! It's really awesome during their alumni game. Probably 2 or 300 additional horns! They have about 30 20Js. Everytime Dr Bodiford finds one on Ebay, he adds a player. Nothing like a great hornline!

I want to disagree. Sort of. Ohio's band was visually exciting. The BOD is sonically exciting. Nothing wrong with either approach. I personally prefer the BOD.

Ohio was more about movement & simple tunes & rhythms. They were jamming to the eye.

The BOD plays music with more harmonies & more parts but the visual movement is simpler. They were jamming to the ear.

I marched Crown (alto bugle, like a mellophone) in the early 90's, when we won the Div 2 world title, and actually finished in the top 12 in brass as a smaller corps. We were mainly regional back then, even with lots of high school kids mixed with college kids...pretty fair # from ECU and some from WCU, which is like a drum corps focusing on one show per year and putting brass and percussion front and center....but these days Crown recruits kids from all over the midwest since many instructors are from Indiana, they also have camps in Texas and other states...they certainly aren't defined by students from the Carolinas anymore. I went to WCU for a couple of years, but didn't like the school...mainly went there for music, and because several Crown buddies were there. When I ended at App (much better choice), the band wasn't even attractive to me because of their style. I respect the tradition of the BOD, though.

I prefer the "Big Ten style" as well. Ohio's band was louder and more pleasing to the eye with their movements. I certainly enjoyed the way they marched onto the field as opposed to running out there like 3rd graders going to recess. I gave them props after the game.

I think that I am right about this. The BOD has two ninety minute rehearsals per week with a Saturday AM run through on game days.
They do an amazing job for such little rehearsal time.

Ohio has saxes in the band. They are similar to the the Ohio State Band in style, uniforms, and passion. They are however a class act and they set in Section 110 in the stadium in Athens. They are very popular. Glad the North Carolina Band of Distinction took the field with them. Our half-time selection was spot on. Great half-time entertainment

OK this will probably insult Ohio, but there is clearly some influence between Ohio State and Ohio on the marching band front. The Ohio band is definitely B1G style, not as focused on the music as they are on the marching and the show. They sounded really good at the pre-game tailgate, but the halftime show not so much. They looked great on the field, and put on a visual show, but the music got lost in the twisting and turning. Maybe some of that is from being "behind" the band on the App side of the stadium, but I kind of doubt it. They are a really good marching band.

The BOD sounded better during halftime, and I think put on a great performance. It is really 2 different styles. Maybe I am being a homer, but I felt like the BOD was more in touch with our fans, and did more pumping and supporting the fans, being in the game.

I liked at the end they turned down Sweet Home Alabama instead of playing over our band. They let them finish and then turned it back on.
