Re: Defensive Coordinator
I think the Schumann comment was a joke. He's already a DC at UGA, wouldn't step down a couple levels to a G5 DC for much less money. His next gig will be a HC just like Lanning to Oregon. However, we could potentially land an assistant or a positions coach from a P5 school.Appst86 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 7:27 amCan we afford Schumann (or anyone at a P5 school)? He's knocking down $800k at UGa. It's frustrating enough that the P5s are getting their pick of the on-field talent, but the salaries they are paying assistants will keep ambitious young position coaches from taking coordinator jobs (or HC jobs) at non-P5 schools.

Re: Defensive Coordinator
Well, he doesn’t fit the criteria laid out for the DC position for Clark. He has never called plays. I’m not saying that he couldn’t, but he hasn’t shown that he can so do you want to take that chance?

Re: Defensive Coordinator
It appears DJ Smith is currently the Recruiting Coordinator and Co-Defensive Coordinator for Missouri under Drinkwitz. At least that is what their website says. Maybe he would be a possibility for one of the openings.

Re: Defensive Coordinator
Yes I would but I’m biased as DJ is one of my all-time favorite App players. For me, he checks all the boxes sans the play calling.
He’s younger than most on staff so more relatable to players. He played in the league which should command respect from current players. As a rookie in the league, he got the green dot in a Dom Capers 3-4 so he’s got the football IQ. He’s knows our system after being under NW and BB. He’s held the recruiting coordinator and recruiting relations titles at Mizzou and App respectively. He’s a Charlotte native so probably has good in roads to the local high schools.
Obviously you never know how any hire will pan out as every situation is different but App rolled the dice on Bryan Brown and that turned out ok for the defense. I’d be excited to see what DJ could do!

Very valid case ![⬆️](//cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/svg/2b06.svg)
However our recent recruiting favors going in a different scheme on D.

Re: Defensive Coordinator
I want Clark to be successful but honestly think this is his last season if the team struggles again this upcoming season. I’d imagine he understands this as well and to me, it would be crazy to completely change schemes, after we’ve recruited for the current system, and take a chance on a complete overhaul. Personally I wouldn’t want to risk such a large scale change in such a defining year.CornCobPipes wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 1:32 pmVery valid case

I tend to agree, but the excuses for a repeat of this season, or worse, are already built in now.moonshine wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 1:50 pmI want Clark to be successful but honestly think this is his last season if the team struggles again this upcoming season.CornCobPipes wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 1:32 pmVery valid case

Re: Defensive Coordinator
That's what makes my stomach churn. We can always find excuses for things depending on which side of things we fall on. The undeniable thing is on-field results, and when we don't have them, and even worse, have regression, change is necessary.appst89 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 1:53 pmI tend to agree, but the excuses for a repeat of this season, or worse, are already built in now.moonshine wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 1:50 pmI want Clark to be successful but honestly think this is his last season if the team struggles again this upcoming season.CornCobPipes wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 1:32 pmVery valid case

Re: Defensive Coordinator
I really don't think there is anyone on this board who wants to win more than Shawn Clark. I don't think anybody is making excuses. Analysis of any situation requires evaluation of all factors within context. Some seem to consider any discussion of context to be excuse making. Think we all need to step back from the cliff as these discussions continue.

Re: Defensive Coordinator
I have a guy that works on my team. He loves our company and was super successful in his last role. He came to our team over a year ago and has struggled massively. We have given him a long leash, support, but he continues to fall apart. His role is not for everyone and it's far from easy to pick up. I sat with him months ago and gave him a gameplan to take one last stab at turning it around. It was short-lived and his head went back under water. His love for our team, Our company, and his pride are making it hard for him to do what needs to be done- he needs to be moved out to another position or fired. He knows it, I know it, my boss knows it. I love the guy to death, but I've made it clear that he's dragging our team down and a change needs to be made. Change is hard to make in corporate environments without certain elements or criteria being met. His pride won't let him bow out and our love for the guy/Financials/"who can we find to replace?" are hurdles my boss is struggling with.Yosef84 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 3:48 pmI really don't think there is anyone on this board who wants to win more than Shawn Clark. Re: Defensive Coordinator
Built in excuses, or legitimate reasons for struggling to maintain success and continuity? It HAS to have at least some impact on the players to learn new plays, verbiage, and processes EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR. Never knowing what to expect or if the way you learned something one year no longer applies.appst89 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 1:53 pmI tend to agree, but the excuses for a repeat of this season, or worse, are already built in now.moonshine wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 1:50 pmI want Clark to be successful but honestly think this is his last season if the team struggles again this upcoming season.CornCobPipes wrote: ↑Thu Jan 12, 2023 1:32 pmVery valid case

Not to mention the evaluation of talent and what athlete fits in to a certain scheme. Look at our QB room the last few years. No true Identity or skill set because each coordinator values different traits that may not exactly fit the next guy’s standard.
Not saying Clark is blameless, or the next Kirby Smart if he had a constant at OC, but thinking it has nothing to do with the product on the field would be kidding ourselves
