An R-MC connection from one guy and an H-SC from another. Sounds like the competition between the two schools continues. You can probably recount some fierce competition between those two schools when you covered that area.AppinVA wrote:This is where I again put in my vote for Rhoades.Mountainrunner1 wrote:The three names I am hearing are...

We are in need of someone to take over the maintenance of the MMB. Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. If anyone here is interested in helping to keep the board running, please let me know via DM.

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
Of the three Odom has by far the least impressive resume. Rhoades and Clark have been very successful over a much longer tenure. Odom comes from good stock......but so did Capel.......a last name is only worth so much. Still a McMahon guy. I prefer the guy that wants to stay and turn his alma mater into a serious contender over a stepping stone.Mountainrunner1 wrote:The three names I am hearing are...

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
Are these names being tossed around by fans, or are these supposedly real targets by the AD? I'm only asking because I got a text yesterday saying Lutz has already been targeted. I hope that text was wrong as we've had enough predetermined hires in the past.Mountainrunner1 wrote:The three names I am hearing are...

I have been a big Mike Rhoades fan for a while. Would love to see VCU's press in the Holmes!
I have also heard Dane Fife's name mentioned as well. Comes from good training and was successful at IPFW as a head coach.

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
There are many candidates out there, some of which are legitimately good candidates. Yet I can't see any of them being better qualified for THIS particular job and its unique circumstances than McMahon. Like others have voiced we need someone who's willing to stay the course to turn this thing around over the next few years and don't see it as just an opportunity to skip town after the first taste of success. Not to say any other coach wouldn't have the same intentions to turn things around, I don't think anyone has a vested interest and attachment to the program like McMahon does. He's a more than capable coach and he also played for this school. That means to me that he wants to see this program, his program, in a healthy position long term. It would definitely take time to turn things around but given the opportunity he could do it. I just hope pride from those making the decision don't get in the way of him being seriously considered for this job because he undoubtedly deserves a chance to make his pitch.

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
Here are the names I would like get at least a good phone interview (in order from what I like the most to what I like the least):
Duggar Baucom – Head Coach VMI. He had over achieved at VMI and his teams are super fun to watch
Derrick Clark - Head Coach at Metro State (D2). Metro State is probably the best D2 team in the nation right now. His team defeated Elon this year and Canisius College which means that they were a much better team this season than us.
Bob Bolen – Current assistant at ETSU former head coach at Mountain State (NAIA D1). He has spent a year studying at ETSU. He made Mountain State the Duke of the NAIA making the tournament every year and periodically winning national championships. The only reason he left Mountain State is because the school no longer had money to pay him and closed its doors. Even in his last year at he won 26 games in the shadow of the college closing down (that's the stuff of movies). This would be a no brainier hire outside of Bob Bolen being charged with a DUI in 2010.
Jim Crutchfield – Head Coach at West Liberty (D2). A very fun and successful D2 team to watch. He's also a bit of a mountain man.
Josh Schertz – Head Coach at Lincoln Memorial (D2). He has built a successful D2 program in the area.
Linc Darner – Head coach at Florida Southern (D2). He's built a great program and would know how to recruit the talent rich state. What makes me nervous is that he is a warm weather guy and I don't know if he will embrace the frozen tundra of Boone (this was one of the problems with Buzz).
Vince Alexander – Head coach at USC Aiken (D2). He had done a very good in Aiken. He makes me a little nervous because he has build all of his successful teams off transfers wanting to play immediately.
Max Good – recently fired from Loyola Marymount. He was the 2012 WCC coach of the year. I think LMU gave up on him too early (and wanted to bring in an NBA coach). He is 72 which causes concerns. He is probably a better fit on the Associate Head Coach list.
Your basketball staff is very important so I think we should be looking at some names we could bring in as associate head coaches. It will be valuable to bring in someone with head coaching experience that we can get on the cheap.
Potential Associate Head Coaches:
Mike Jarvis – recently fired from Florida Atlantic (Understands Sun Belt basketball) and was very successful as a head coach at Boston U, George Washington, and St. Johns.
Jeff Jackson – recently fired from Furman after 7 season. He is an experienced coach that would understand App State tradition.

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
Yes. I saw quite a few top-five match-ups between the two. Ryan was gone by the time I arrived, but I wouldn't be upset if we went in that direction, either. The Tony Shaver coached teams at H-SC were the most fundamentally sound teams I've ever seen play.hapapp wrote:An R-MC connection from one guy and an H-SC from another. I love the idea of making a big push for LeVelle Modon.
How much could we realistically pay someone?

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
I figured out he was a very successful D3 coach so he would fit our qualifications. I'd love to see him come in but I don't know if we could get him. He's in a good situation right now making a good living and he doesn't seem to enjoy moving his family. I think he's waiting for the VCU job.ASUMountaineer wrote:Likewise.AppinVA wrote:This is where I again put in my vote for Rhoades.Mountainrunner1 wrote:The three names I am hearing are...

Agree. Maybe he's a future great, but if we're going to hire an assistant, can it at least be one from a winning program?

Lutz, Mike Young, Moton, Rhodes
I'm not too convinced about alum coaching loyalty when opportunity comes a knockin' (See Melvin Watkins)

Every coach desires to move up the ranks. Viewing this job as ONLY a stepping stone and actually having a vested interest and desire to make the program healthy are two different things.

Bobby Lutz is the guy that Cobb has focused on. I have heard this from several sources.

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
Yeah, I have concerns about this too. I want someone who wants to be here for good just as much as the next guy, but if we're being realistic, a coach with this philosophy can breed complacency. Ironically, I think this is what happened to Lutz and UNCC. Now, if we can find a guy who wants to remain here and can keep the hunger it takes to keep advancing the program, then come on down.thegreengopher wrote:Every coach desires to move up the ranks. Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
I don't believe we are looking at any coach staying here for 10-20 years. I'm not saying that based on whether or not a coach views the job as a stepping stone. In reality it's hard to turn away 2x, 3x, and sometimes 4x the money. All I'm saying is I'd rather someone be here for 4-8 years with a vested interest in the program being healthy and a viable mid major program before jumping ship, rather than someone who may jump ship at the first sniff at another "higher" position.

Please NO! If this is true it just sounds like another lazy hire for the Men's BB program. IMO.Earl the Pearl wrote:Bobby Lutz is the guy that Cobb has focused on. I have heard this from several sources.

Re: The ASU coaching search and potential candidates to disc
I could like the Lutz hire. Anybody think if in fact Lutz is the guy, it could be his final destination? Nothing is for sure, but he is much older than some of these other names mentioned. Thoughts?
