We are in need of someone to take over the maintenance of the MMB. Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. If anyone here is interested in helping to keep the board running, please let me know via DM.

Re: Predict the next coach thread
The more I read, the better Mike Rhoades, the associate head coach at VCU, is looking. He's been up for the Siena and FIU head coaching positions (among others) the last couple years. Great record as a DIII head coach, great results and level of responsibility at a highly successful mid-major and success in one of the best defensive-minded programs in D1. Great defense can make up bad offense on a team with streaky or struggling shooters (App) and I would love to see some "Havoc" in the Holmes. Put the bug in his ear Charlie.

Not all, but it was a good try.

All coaching contracts should have a graduation rate clause in them.

OK, Maddog'56 and everyone, let me try again...
What I was trying to get at before I set off the "alarm" was that our basketball program will be at a crossroads by season's end. The athletic administration will have to extend the current head coach's contract or put him in the "non-reappointed" category. If, as it would appear now, he is non-reappointed, then comes the big decision of whether we intend to build a serious contender for Sunbelt basketball championships or if we'll continue to operate a BBB--playing Bargain-Basement-Ball. Obviously, we have a limit on our resources, but I believe that we are at a point where we'll have to spend good money in order to make good money. If that means re-ordering some budget priorities, then so be it. The sooner we do it, the better.
There are a lot of ways to structure a financial package for head coaches. Base salary is only one component. The university will need to heavily upgrade the base salary that can be offered and then get creative on other perks--deferred salary, annuity/401K contracts, insurance contracts, camps and any number of other revenue producers. There are ways to build an attractive financial package at AppState without making the ship list 45 degrees in the water. It must be done if we ever hope to be relevant and respected in men's basketball...and put students and other paying customers in seats on game day.
Perhaps we're getting close to beating this poor horse to death, but the message needs to be amply reinforced in the AD's suite at KBS. And it's clear to me that this thread is being monitored by the athletic department. Let there be no doubt that our messages will be delivered to the decision-makers.

Nothing there that I disagree with and if it is being monitored I think that if we leave voodoo politics out it makes a much more meaningful case.asu66 wrote: ---------------------------------------------------------------------

I try not to "go there" first, but I admit that I get sucked in rather easy. Currently, I'm in a 1 step program, (don't even sign up for the Politic area), but it doesn't take much for me to "fall off the wagon".

Re: Predict the next coach thread
Ya know, I've been pondering your mention of Greenberg for a couple of days. There's no doubt that when Charlie Cobb sits down for interviews, the huge elephant in the room is going to be Appalachian's "equity-diversity" agenda; just as it was when Jason Capel was hired.wncapp78 wrote:Seth Greenberg
Greenberg is Jewish. That would easily pass muster with the ultra liberal ASU Diversity office. Greenberg is 59 years old. His next head coaching position is highly likely to be his last. He wouldn't be job-hopping if we can get a salary and benefits package he can live with. There's an active Jewish community in The High Country that would embrace Greenberg and his family quickly. The Greenbergs have lived in and recruited kids far and wide to live in Blacksburg--so the NC High Country isn't that big a stretch. Greenberg is a details-oriented teacher, a proven program builder and a proven promoter. I don't think we'd get so many polished skills and experience in any one individual with anyone else currently in the "college basketball HC job market" (that we'd have any chance to hire and who could pass that stern campus diversity test).
Methinks Seth Greenberg is one of the first calls I'd suggest be made when the time comes. What have we got to lose at this stage of program decay? Not much...so, Charlie, find that phone number and put it on a black & gold sticky where you can find it in a hurry.

Re: Predict the next coach thread
I was watching Duke/Syracuse last night and they had an interview with Duke associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski. He's been on K's staff since 1999 and associate coach since 2008. I'd love to have him as App's head coach, although he seems like he could be the successor to K in the near future.

He and his head assistant seem to be a pretty effective team...how in the world did you find him?appstfan wrote:My choice for next head coach--LINC DARNER! A head coach was is a WINNER!

Doubt he would be interested, though. I suspect he could get a higher-profile job if he wanted, or he might rather just stick around Duke's bench until K retires rather than risk running his own program and struggling, the way some others from K's coaching tree have.

I hadn't read the whole thread but I'd figure out a way to step up to the Plate and pay the $ to get Bobby Lutz. Maybe MH will fell bad enough about aCapel and pay the difference?

Re: Predict the next coach thread
Do we have any specific concrete reason to think that any one of the many coaches mentioned in this thread, with the exception of Matt McMahon, would actually be interested in being the head basketball coach at ASU? Of course when Buzz left, I don't think we actually interviewed anyone before hiring Jason Capel. So how would we know within recent history?

Has he been a big financial contributor to the athletic program? Is that why he was mentioned?asu66 wrote:JCline0429 wrote:Who is MH?Rekdiver wrote:I hadn't read the whole thread but I'd figure out a way to step up to the Plate and pay the $ to get Bobby Lutz. Re: Predict the next coach thread
Yes. He's said to have been one of the driving forces behind getting Buzz back to ASU five years ago. He was Buzz's landlord--putting Buzz up for free on nights he had to be in The High Country. Remember--Jan (Mrs. Buzz) refused to move back to Boone. Buzz had mortgages on houses in Knoxville, Myrtle Beach and in Charlotte that he had been unable to sell during the recession. He couldn't possibly have gotten a loan on a house in Boone. When Buzz hired Capel as an assistant; Harrill became Capel's landlord, also. He's said to have provided Capel housing for free. It has been reported that Harrill exerted heavy influence on Cobb to name Capel head coach. That's an allegation that I can't personally verify--but it has a lot of legs. And a lot of believers. To be fair, there also folks who deny that Harrill did any heavy arm twisting.JCline0429 wrote:Has he been a big financial contributor to the athletic program? The same MH that attended WHS when I did in the stone age. As far as being a big contributor, yes, APParently he has discovered carbohybrates since the late 70s.
