We are in need of someone to take over the maintenance of the MMB. Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. If anyone here is interested in helping to keep the board running, please let me know via DM.

FIRE JASON CAPEL NOW!
This will at least send a message to the players that we, as a university expect better than this.

Re: FIRE JASON CAPEL NOW!
I will say this. If he goes 0-3 next week, which is very possible, it might be the right thing to do. Right now is tough because there's a game in three days and the start of conference play sort-of wipes the slate clean. After next Saturday you have five days before a homestand. This team is lacking creativity and teamwork. I believe they have talent, but the coaching is horrendous. This season is spiraling downward fast.

Re: FIRE JASON CAPEL NOW!
The university is getting nothing-investment wise- from Capel whether he stays or goes now... I agree that the school needs to send a message that this is unacceptable... Let an assistant finish the year while searching for next head coach. In the long run, it seems, going "cheap" has a steep price tag... Time to invest $$$ in coach... Program is losing big money due to poor attendance-fan apathy. Time for a change all the way around for Appalachian basketball.

Re: FIRE JASON CAPEL NOW!
But we can't guys! It isn't fair to Capel because he is a real person and has a family! What kind of message will this send to prospective coaches?!! How would you like it if people were calling for you to be fired?!
God forbid we let someone go who isn't performing at their job. It happens all the time, athletics are no different. They just happen to be in the public eye.

Re: FIRE JASON CAPEL NOW!
I'll admit, I was a big fan of this hiring when it occurred. I thought we were getting someone with excellent potential, early in their career. We'd get to keep him for 3-4 years before he was gobbled up by a bigger program elsewhere.
I don't think any of us have expectations of Final Four runs or for that matter consistent invitations to the Dance, however I'm in awh of how bad the Capel experience has been. Its obvious an immediate change is needed.
Charlie should walk over to Watauga HS, ask their JV coach if he's interested in coaching the team. Then hold an open try-out at the Quinn Center, and let's go! Couldn't be any worse than where we're at right now.

Re: FIRE JASON CAPEL NOW!
I try not to direct my anger at JC personally since anyone would have taken the job in the same situation, but I can't help it. I hate this man. This Tar Hole took a team that was a few points from an NCAA tournament appearance, a team with a preseason SoCon player of the year, and has systematically turned it into one of the worst in the country. Just a few years ago the Holmes Dome had a solid atmosphere and decent attendence considering the school's mountain location and the nature of midweek games and being a mid major program in the heart of ACC country. Now we can't get 1,000 people to watch the train wreck go on.
Let's also not forget that these players' grades are one year shy of NCAA repercussions and we have a player with criminal issues. All the bad press from "holding a player hostage" and the "worst free throw ever" happened under his tenure as well. These players he's recruited are terrible. They are poorly motivated. They show every game that they lack even the most basic skills of team play, which has let to blowout losses to every team we've faced.
I'm not familiar with other schools' histories obviously, but I truly believe that Jason Capel could make a case for the worst basketball coaching hire in NCAA history. I can not believe that this man is STILL at App. This isn't some "who do they think they are?" firing like Bobby Lutz at UNCC or Tom Obrien at NCSUFB. This level of failure in every facet of the job would be unacceptable at any level, especially a school of the size/caliber/prestige of App State.
FIRE CAPEL. FIRE CAPEL yesterday.

Re: FIRE JASON CAPEL NOW!
Prediction. I have no more to go on than anybody else on this board, but I'm sticking my neck out and guessing the following:
Even though Capel's contract runs out at the end of the season, surely it will not be renewed, BUT SOMEHOW it will go down as a resignation as far as the media is concerned and to let the Big Blue leaning donors who put him in, clear a little bit of egg off their faces and keep the door cracked for having some potential influence in the next hire. Of course it will be more difficult to sway the hire this time around as this would make them 0 for 3.
Nothing would be a surprise though as Charlie may show some nads and assume some risk by forcing JC's resignation as early as post the Phoenix game. At any rate, the Apps will have to win big over Elon for Capel to have even a snowball's chance in Hades to hold on to his job for the rest of the season.

Re: FIRE JASON CAPEL NOW!
What ever your feelings about the coaching, don't blame it on the players. They are trying to do what they are told and are obviously not developing under the current system. At this point I would pull the plug on JC if for no other reason, just to shake things up a bit. Losing and losing bad every week is going to ruin these players if it hasn't already. Just appoint someone to change things up, change practice routines, use different matchups, or even change the game day schedule. It is near rock bottom right now. Give these guys some hope!

Re: FIRE JASON CAPEL NOW!
what bothers me most is there isn't any positves we can hang our hopes on in the near or far future, current squad getting better every game...nope, coaching staff getting better every game...nope, strong recruiting class coming in....have to wait and see, but not holding my breath, no division 1 squad willing to come to Boone, and, a fan base that just has given up on the program, and to be honest I sure as hell cant blame anyone in Boone, student or long time resident, for not going to any of the the home games; why would you want to waste your time and money when the team is one of the worst in the country, Unless he wins the SC tourniment, and makes the Big Dance, CC better not renew his contract.

As far as positives are concerned, we will be joining a conference that is stronger than the SoCon in terms of RPI. It could be rough at first, but I am hoping that by playing stronger competition, we will get better as a result. This means less games against sub D-1 squads as well.

As bad a hire as he was, Capel wasn't even the worst hire by a North Carolina-based university in 2010: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_BzdelikGonzo wrote:I'm not familiar with other schools' histories obviously, but I truly believe that Jason Capel could make a case for the worst basketball coaching hire in NCAA history.

Because Capel is at least a good guy and people generally like him.BUTCH1991 wrote:appgrouch wrote:If Kummar becomes interim, it can.

No one likes Kummar, not the fans, not the alumni, not the former players, and, if truth could be told, the current players don't like him. I have seen him in practices and at the MBB camp and, from a coaching stand point in his attitude, I wouldn't want him anywhere near my team or child. He is very abrasive and demeaning.
If we fire Jason during the season, we will need someone that can rally the team and get them all working together to salvage what would be left of the season. Maybe Gainey or Sampson could do this but Kummar would drive the team rest of the may in the whole.
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.
