Re: Dale Jones out - Footballscoop
I don’t want to get too excited, as I realize it may still be a long shot, but…
After browsing some message boards and tweets, it appears that Jeff Brohm is bringing his DL coach from Purdue with him to Louisville. It also appears Satt is keeping Cincinnati’s DL coach. That hopefully leaves Coach Ivey as a possibility to return to Boone.
Haven’t seen or heard anything about Gasparato, other than it appears he is coaching in Louisville’s bowl game Saturday. A long shot, but I would love to get them both back.
GO APPS!!

Re: Dale Jones out - Footballscoop
I just want the best possible DC and DL coach we can get, regardless of any prior App ties. We are a very well known entity in college football, I am always amazed that we seem to constantly only look for coaches with prior App ties when it is well documented that the job is very desirable and I imagine draws a lot of interest from non App coaches. I don't have any issue with Ivey or Gas but there may be much better options out there if we just opened our eyes and looked around.

I don't get why people say this. We had two on staff before Jones was let go with App ties....t4pizza wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 2:45 pmI just want the best possible DC and DL coach we can get, regardless of any prior App ties. Support staff has 3 more, but that's not unusual at any school to give your former players experience.

Re: Dale Jones out - Footballscoop
You really don't understand why people want the best possible coach regardless of App ties? What part is so confusing or so off base that it just makes no sense to you? Or is it my observation that we seem to look for those with App ties? If so, I should clarify that I mean the many posters seem to always look for former App guys. Truthfully, nobody really knows who Clark is looking for because he does a good job of keeping it to himself and those trusted enough not to release the information.AppStateNews wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 3:27 pmI don't get why people say this. I thought we already had our guy, just hasn't been leaked yet. At least we held onto our defensive recruits without the announcement.t4pizza wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 3:45 pmYou really don't understand why people want the best possible coach regardless of App ties? Do our recruits know who it is? Surely, we are sending the DC on trips to recruit.

It's the fan base thinking the football program only looks for App ties. So many "fans" somehow have that notion. It's simply not true.t4pizza wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 3:45 pmYou really don't understand why people want the best possible coach regardless of App ties? The "App ties" won us 3 national titles in a row! Drinkitz was the best possible candidate and got rich off of App State football after 1 year. I'll take the guy that truly loves App State, is a great coach, and wants to be here. Coaching sustainability seemed to a big part in our championship runs.

Nice use of that App State buzzword "sustainability" in the coaching search.appstate95 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 4:55 pmThe "App ties" won us 3 national titles in a row! Re: Dale Jones out - Footballscoop
I have no problem with hiring a coach with "App Ties" if he is a good coach. It seems some folks on this board think we should always be looking outside the family. Apparently coaches with "App State ties" are valued by other schools more than some of our own value them. With a little searching online I found coaches or staff members with ASU ties on several teams including (some obvious, some not): Louisville, Cincinnati, Army, UNC, William & Mary, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Miami, NC State, Missouri (yes it is Drink but still proves my point), and the Carolina Panthers (a total of 25 names). I am sure I have missed several others. John Settle just recently lost his job with Kentucky after also coaching at Wisconsin, Fresno State, and in the NFL with Carolina, Baltimore, and Cleveland. If it comes down to a couple of candidates who are otherwise equal...I would take the one with App State ties.

Re: Dale Jones out - Footballscoop
I’m not saying we’re Alabama, but they circulate coaches with Alabama ties. Hire within, go be a head coach / coordinator somewhere, fail and come back to Alabama. Their coaches that do leave develop younger coaches that are hired at bama.
When you run a system that breeds successful coaching, that’s kind of what you do…

Clemson’s TE coach is an App Grad.AppYosef! wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 5:19 pmI have no problem with hiring a coach with "App Ties" if he is a good coach. Re: Dale Jones out - Footballscoop
Would you rather have a so-so coach with App “ties” or a very good/great coach that has never been on campus before?

That’s an interesting question. What attributes make him a good/great coach?Cro-Magnon App wrote: ↑Fri Dec 16, 2022 1:53 pmWould you rather have a so-so coach with App “ties” or a very good/great coach that has never been on campus before?

It is a measurable attribute. We even have it in our bylaws.... "Always a winning". It is a non negotiable.

Re: Dale Jones out - Footballscoop
To me, the most important metric in a position candidate is someone who has coached up players to consistently perform at a high level. And don't get me wrong; we all understand there a LOT of other variables involved in a player's performance.
But I see this as a bellwether. If a coach is an "App Guy" (the definition of which has been argued ad nauseum in other places), then OK. But if not, that's OK too.
Keep in mind that we won national championships because the man many considered to be "Mr. App State" (aka, Jerry Moore) saw that our offense scheme was dated and could only get us so far. So he sought out people like Rich Rodriguez to learn the spread offense, he installed it at App and the rest is history.
This holds true in many professions, like medicine. If you attend one university for med school, you generally want to go somewhere else for your residency. The diversity of thought and exposure to new ideas can make you a better clinician who can take better care of their patients. If you return to your alma mater to practice medicine, you bring all of those new ideas/skills/concepts back with you. That can be a boon for your colleagues and the care teams on which you serve.

I hope SC and DG are reading this thread so they know what to do. It makes me nervous that we are not involved in the decisions.
