Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
I have concerns about this game but they have nothing to do with the score.
They have everything to do with our:
1. Poor offensive execution at critical points in the game
2. Lack of offensive energy/rhythm in the 2nd half
3. Abysmal red zone production (the trend continues)
4. Very shaky kicking game
On the other side of the ball, our defense played LIGHTS OUT today.
If this had been our first game after the COVID layoff, then I get it. But after the way we dismantled A-State last wk, leaves me wondering. The toughest part of the schedule remains to be played.

I dunno to me it looked like a case of playing a lowsy opponent and just sort of sleepwalking through it. We knew we were going to win this game at kickoff and basically ran the ball at will.Bootsy wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 6:29 pmI have concerns about this game but they have nothing to do with the score.

Certainly could have been a bit crisper but I’m not too worried. I had trouble caring about this game too.

Sleepwalking, mailing it in, unfocused, nonchalantly playing, all describe what we saw today. I am always one to expect our team to play up to their abilities regardless of the opponent but that was far from what we saw today. In that regard I would say our team hugely disappointed us today. It is like a kid capable of delivering an A but slips by with a D effort. The parent and child should be very unhappy even though the kid passed.
Very disappointed with effort today.

I dunno man. GA State is a much better team that ULM. I actually thought about going to the game because I live relatively close, and I thought it would be a close game. ULM hasn’t led a single game they’ve played. They may be the worst team in D1 football.AtlAppMan wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 7:17 pmCoastal didn’t seem to have any trouble getting up fo Ga State.ah59396 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 7:02 pmI dunno to me it looked like a case of playing a lowsy opponent and just sort of sleepwalking through it. With due respect I think you’re being pretty silly. We controlled this road conference game from start to finish. They scored on the last play of the game that no one cares about otherwise it’s a 31-7 victory.AtlAppMan wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 7:17 pmCoastal didn’t seem to have any trouble getting up fo Ga State.ah59396 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 7:02 pmI dunno to me it looked like a case of playing a lowsy opponent and just sort of sleepwalking through it. Coastal and won big too but they throw the ball a ton. We ran for over 300 yards today.
We are 4-1 and won easy today. Some of y’all are hard to keep happy!

Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
No. He ran for over 100 yards and threw the ball with confidence.
I thought our offensive play calling took a step forward today. We had two and three backs in the backfield including having Harrington and Peoples in the backfield at the same time. We ran the read option to the tune of Zac rushing for over 100 yards. The flea flicker was a great call and was set up well.
If know it's ifs, but on the first series ZT threw a TD pass that turned into an INT because the receiver mishandled the reception. If we throw the ball on first down or ZT throws the ball away, we get points out of a two minute drive to end the half. The last TD was like the last TD by Campbell....meaningless points as the clock we running out.
Our defense continues to play very strong, forced turnovers and we tackle and hit aggressively when doing so. We moved the ball at will when we needed to today.
This game was never in question and we picked up the W. We even covered kickoffs well and caused a fumble in doing so. We had one punt that was downed at the 1 and we almost took our one punt return to the house. No, we weren't perfect, but we were more than good enough today.

Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
That pass turned into an interception because it was about 3 feet too short for the receiver who was behind the db. Credit to their db who continued with the play and was there when the ball fell into his body. The game was not in question but if you don't think that our qb has shown some questionable play in this game, then we just see football in a different manner. I hope he was frustrated because some of those plays frustrated me and I KNOW he cares more about that game then I do.

Coastal is showing us how it’s done once you get that elusive top 25 ranking for a team in the Belt. While many of us on this forum were saying we needed to go out and stomp a mud hole in our competition in win in impressive fashion, they’re actually doing it. A win is a win, so I’ll take it for today but we can play much better and I won’t be satisfied until we become more consistent and more explosive on offense.

It’s a W. Sexy or not, we took care of business on the road and next game is most important game. One game at a time. Who’s next?

No offense to Coastal but let us see how the season plays out. They are playing well as a team, but they are a different team with McCall under center. The kid is a difference maker. Yes, they look good. But he and his offense haven’t faced a defense as good as ours on all three levels.

Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
We now have 5 backs that have run for 100 yards in a game and we saw why we need Marcus Williams on the field. The defense continues to play great ball. It was a comfortable win but our failure to execute in the 2nd half was disappointing. Frankly, from a fans standpoint, it made for a dull second half. Overall, much more positive than negative but we're not quite the well oiled machine yet.
Folks can dog Coastal but they have wins over teams with a winning record, we can't say the same. Doesn't we can't or won't beat them but they are the best in the Belt right now. Our opponents to date are 5-18.

Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
I imagine that everyone in App Nation wanted to see more fireworks yesterday (including me) and there were some execution issues, but I didn't see anything alarming about yesterday's game. App was clearly in control from the beginning. We played a vanilla game against a ban opponent and got a lot of young guys some reps. Coastal's first "defense" of their ranking was last week and it was a fairly lackluster performance against a not-very-good but always dangerous Georgia Southern team. Yesterday was an impressive win against Georgia State, and I didn't watch it but I have to think that Georgia State collapsed in that game.

Three short years ago, in a season where we destroyed UL, Stink, and beat down Toledo 34-0, this ULM team beat us. A road conference win is always a keeper. The defense is looking strong. The offense just needs to find its rhythm, and getting Hennigan and Virgil healthier will help this. I’d rather beat Coastal and UL by one that ULM by 50. One at a time.

Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
Let's not forget that we were played without our #1 receiver (opted out for the season) and our alternate #1 was playing hurt. Virgil is also out and was inactive. We got some freshmen some valuable reps for the second straight week. We got reps for 5 different RBs including two freshmen. We played vanilla which is exactly what we should have done. At no point was this game in doubt. Let's also not forget that we got screwed out of points at the end of the first half (yes...bad decision to run the ball by Zac, but they still should have blown the play dead and put some time back on the clock when the D player picked it up). App easily could have scored a couple more TDs, but I don't think running up the stats was the priority. Yesterday was a good win....that's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.MAD Doctor wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 8:33 amThree short years ago, in a season where we destroyed UL, Stink, and beat down Toledo 34-0, this ULM team beat us. Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
The call at the end of the half was correct and hopefully a lesson learned. We got a big lead and ran out the clock...the entire second half. Not high on entertainment value but a road win in a trap game.

Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
The point of my comment wasn't to dicker over the call. I was just pointing out that our on-field performance actually exceeded the scoreboard. I would say by half-time this was no longer a "trap game." App was in full control. I agree....not the most entertaining second half, but I think we accomplished the goal.
