I think that this is entirely possible. Coaches are charged with, not only working within a player’s strengths, but also helping the player find out things about themselves that they didn’t know they had. Unfortunately, you really can’t gauge that until you see them work in game situations. The Rock wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 3:35 pmIs it possible Roof installs or at least did the first couple weeks, some “new” looks against opponents he feels we can out talent to get a feel for what our defense can do, and then go back to what he knows works against the tougher teams?
If you think about our first 5 games, we did really good defensively against the toughest opponents and gave up more yardage to the UNCC and CC.
Could it be that he was just trying to work some of what he wants to install eventually against teams we could pretty easily beat?

Re: Ted 'The Truth' Roof Appreciation Thread
I was not happy the first two games with good reason, though very few were calling for him to be fired (OP did, but that is the only one I recall). I'm glad things are coming together and the defense is coming around to being dominant again. I imagine adjustments had to be made on both ends with the players' trust in Roof and his trust in the players. I read an article yesterday that indicated Josh Thomas has been the one that's helped to bridge that gap.
Something I'm not sure has been discussed in detail, but could have been in another thread. Did you guys look at the drive summaries? I know we locked in after that first drive, but gawd almighty! Of the remaining 14 ULM drives, 10 were 3 and out, 3 ended in turnovers after 4 plays, and the last drive ended after the clock ran out. Our previous defenses were stingy in the red zone, but teams often moved the ball freely between the 20's. This performance was ridiculous.

Re: Ted 'The Truth' Roof Appreciation Thread
Sometimes we go plain on the other teams opening drive to to see what they are wanting to do. Good teams make adjustments and tighten things up. We put a dang stranglehold on ULM. Glad to see the defense having fun. The improvement is awesome.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2019 8:17 amI was not happy the first two games with good reason, though very few were calling for him to be fired (OP did, but that is the only one I recall). Their QB was terrible and receiver drops as mentioned. We got little pressure on the QB however.....

But we held them to one TD and an extra point. Coach Roof knows what he is doing.

There was a thread named Fire Roof and it had pages of negative responses.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2019 8:17 amI was not happy the first two games with good reason, though very few were calling for him to be fired (OP did, but that is the only one I recall). If you go back and read them you will find very few that said anything about firing Roof, other than that was stupid - Take 30 seconds and go back in this very threat and read what I said about that - many felt the same way

Didn't say it did. But, the general tenor of the thread was that Roof should be fired after only two games into the season.appst89 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2019 11:15 amThat doesn't mean that everyone who replied shared that view.NewApp wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2019 11:07 amThere was a thread named Fire Roof and it had pages of negative responses.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2019 8:17 amI was not happy the first two games with good reason, though very few were calling for him to be fired (OP did, but that is the only one I recall). Re: Ted 'The Truth' Roof Appreciation Thread
I'm here and admit it. I called for him to be fired. I was highly upset that a statistically top 10 defense had regressed so significantly, and the issues/concerns that had been pointed out when coach Roof was hired seemed to be very evident. However, I was clearly wrong and couldn't be happier about it. Whatever coach Roof (and others) has done is working and working well. I'm thrilled watching the Apps dominating on both sides of the ball again. It feels right.
