Appalachian's Playoff History

Unread post by RankinApp » Tue Mar 26, 2013 5:05 pm

Here's a look at what has been accomplished by the Mountaineers during their stay in the FCS ranks.

The only FCS team to win three straight championships in 2005, 2006, 2007.

NCAA Playoff Appearances: 20
1986, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012

Tied for second most all-time with Eastern Kentucky. Montana is first with 21 appearances.

First Playoff Appearance: 1986
Last Playoff Appearance: 2012

Playoff Record: 24-17 (.585)

The 24 wins is fourth most all-time behind Georgia Southern (45), Montana (32), and Youngstown State (25).

The 17 losses are third most all-time behind Montana (19) and Eastern Kentucky (18).

The total of 41 games played is third behind Georgia Southern (58) and Montana (51).

The .585 winning percentage is 10th all-time, seventh if including teams with 5+ playoff appearances, and 5th if counting teams with 10+ playoff appearances.

Might be blasphemy to some but outside of our run we underachieved.

Underachieved (1999, for sure). Injuries (1995, 2008), and played well enough, but just plain got beat in Montana's end zone (2000, 2009).

I think that's a fair assessment. But the number of appearances is still an impressive feat considering the strength of the SoCon over the years.

And this thread is just further proof no one cares about the playoffs. :P

The playoffs and National Championships was a great period in Mountaineer Athletics. We were all truly blessed to have experienced it. Now it is time to turn the page and enter the next chapter. There's no time for doubting, no time for hesitation and no turning back. It all starts tomorrow and I can't wait for 4 PM to arrive! Let's get this ball rolling!

The fact that we could only get 10,000-15,00 for playoff games is also supportive of that idea.

App more than most advertised the hell out of the FCS playoffs, saying it was the "real championships", "why go to a bowl when you can have a playoff", etc. However the gate numbers showed that half of the people didn't buy into that idea.

Don't get me wrong I loved the idea of the playoffs. I hope FBS expands further on it soon. However it wasn't what it once was.

I remember a discussion I had with a couple of football players in either 2006 or 2007. They said that the program lost money on every trip to the National Championship. They didn't get one dollar from gate receipts and the teams had to arrive several days early for media and such. Then you add on the cheerleaders, band, highest boosters, etc.

My wife and I were talking about the cost of several playoff games verus one bowl game. The cost was about the same (especially with short time frame and having to fly to Texas for national championship). We would much rather have time to plan for the bowl game.

I certainly agree about underachieving during the rule of The Committee, especially with the talent we had that was given chances to play on Sunday. This past year there are a myriad of reasons for not making a further run. It was hard climbing the proverbial "mountan" to success and to see thoat group not parlay it into more. Says a lot about their collective abilities as leaders and coaches.

It's difficult to get to the pinnacle, as APPS journey began after the Working regime and took forever a long time. That is why I have a huge disdain for The Committee to have pissed it away to near mediocrity with the talent they had.

Unfortunately, something similar could happen in a lower tier bowl game for us :( .
