A shame this game does not start at 2:30 or even 1:30 as that would put Amtrak into the transportation mix for the football game at UNC-CH. Not often do we (or I at least) have Amtrak as an option for away games. I am sure EVERYONE is as disappointed as I am about this.

Amtrak does arrive from Raleigh early enough on train #73 or #75, but departure times are not going to work at the end of he game except for #78 back to Raleigh. From the Charlotte/Triad side trains #80 and #74 work but nothing southbound after the game on Saturday.

Of course one could spend the night in Chapel Hill and have 4 trains north to Raleigh or 4 trains South to Charlotte on Sunday. One train north would even take you to New York without having to change trains.

PART Transit in the Triad does have a bus route from Greensboro to Almance then on to Chapel Hill that arrives early enough for the game but alas, the return trip is before the game ends.

I guess I am driving myself and parking in Friday Center.

I did contact Chapel Hill Transit on Facebook about their thoughts on the best parking for Triad <> Chapel Hill drivers and Friday Center or the lot on MLKJr Drwas their suggestion. The Chapel Hill transit buses are going to start running 3 hours before game time based on what they told me. Not a free ride but a discount for a round trip to and from the park and ride lots to the stadium.

Amtrak doesn’t really get you to Chapel Hill, the Durham Amtrak station is 30 minutes away. It probably is just as easy to drive time wise from the Triad.

I haven't been to a Carolina football or basketball game for some time but when I did go I would take #54 from Graham to Carrboro - Just before arriving in Carrboro there was a Park and Ride lot a couple of blocks to the right - can't remember the name but it was free parking and $5 round trip per person - Best thing I can say about UNC sports is/was their park and ride services

I know someone that has a hot air balloon though he has never offered a ride to me. That would be one way of getting to Chapel Hill, though I am not sure I would accept unless it came with a parachute to use if the balloon started to malfunction.

It is not 30 min from Durham to Chapel Hill but you are correct in that the station would be Durham that would be used. Google mentions 27 minutes but I think it can be done quicker. I was thinking 20 minutes. It is hard to argue with Google however.

It is not so much the travel time but the train ride itself and the carbon footprint reduction over driving a car with few or only 1 person in the car.

One reason I contacted CH Transit is that is was not clear if all the park and ride lots were in use for football games. I got the impression that not all were in use. Maybe they are and I just read their website with less than great reading comprehension.

I found some updated information from Chapel Hill Transit that includes start times for the Tar Heel Express shuttles.

Chapel Hill Transit will provide Tar Heel Express shuttle service on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, for the North Carolina football game against Appalachian State, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Kenan Stadium. Shuttles will begin at 12:30 p.m. from the Friday Center and Airport Drive (103 Airport Drive, Chapel Hill) park and rides, and 2 p.m. from the Southern Village and Jones Ferry Road park and rides.

Shuttles drop off and pick up on South Road at Carmichael Auditorium and Woolen gym. The shuttles will provide continuous and fully accessible service, running every 10 to 15 minutes between the park and rides and Kenan Stadium, until 15 minutes after kick-off. An on demand return shuttle will operate until the end of the game, when full shuttle service resumes. The shuttles will operate for 45 minutes following the game. Shuttle rides are $5 for a round-trip or $3 for a one-way trip.

Park and ride permits are not required during Tar Heel Express events.

I have a hard time using Uber or Lyft given their employee structure. I have always been able to use mass transit or I take a taxi. I know taxi drivers have some level of employee protections such as workers comp, hopefully insurance. In some cities they are even union. I would not say I would never take Uber but I have not done so yet and in this case they are providing some cheap readily available transit options that do a better job with employee pay And carbon footprint.
