Why the coach bashing
Considering the relatively low amount of pay and benefits, as well as the early development of the FBS portion of our program, we may have the best all around football staff in the country. Sure, there is Monday morning quarterback allowed, but Geez, why all the bashing? We lost as a team and staff as a whole, not one single aspect, unit, player, or coach should be blamed.
No, there is no such thing as a moral victory, but d@mn, we beat the spread. Last week were said to be 3-4 points underdogs and it still took everything the Deacs had to squeak by us.
Now, here's where someone says, "this is what message boards are for," but I just hope none of the staff or team is reading these posts as they lost a lot more than we fans did. It sure won't help morale. We've lost to two P-5's this year. It has to be 10 times as hard for them as us. We didn't have to practice our hearts out this week and still endure the dings from last week's game, in addition to attending a week of classes. They did.
Just my two cents..actually my one cent as I have already used up one cent defending the coaches, staff and players in other posts.

Re: Why the coach bashing
I think our coaches coached a helluva game. I might not agree with every play call but that could be said about any game and any coach and is easy after the fact. The play calling and game planning was great and was not a reason why we lost. I have expressed some criticism of play calling in past but not today. Satt and Co were on top of their game against WF.
Great Job!

I understand you to be a man of some years, so I hope this resonates with you without further adieu. Don't feed the trolls, let alone start a new topic to talk about them and your disinterest in their point of view. </discussion>NewApp wrote: ↑Mon Sep 25, 2017 4:00 pmConsidering the relatively low amount of pay and benefits, as well as the early development of the FBS portion of our program, we may have the best all around football staff in the country. Re: Why the coach bashing
Im not bashing the coaches...but the attention to detail on the field goal try was either ignored by the players or not reinforced by some coach. Rubino had been kicking low all day, Wake had been bringing in tall guys to try to block and been successful ref: the blocked xp. IMO I'm just pointing out a major mistake. I hope the coaches read this. I reserve my coach bashing for owner Jerry Richardson ( Weekend at Bernie's) and Ron Rivera.

Not trying to keep this post alive, but I must say that while Satt and staff aren't perfect, they are likely the most perfect we'll EVER see. I hope he retires a Mountaineer 40 years from now.

Re: Why the coach bashing
I'm not sure if they guy who blocked the field goal was in on the other kicks. I'm not sure that that wasn't just a situation where a tall player who could leap timed it perfectly. I do believe that Rubino was struggling some Saturday (remember though he did kick two field goals). Coach Holt has said that the first kick (blocked EP), Rubino miss hit it. He also mentioned that Speir and Rubino had not really worked much together. Speir as the #2 holder had worked more with the #2 kicker.Rekdiver wrote: ↑Tue Sep 26, 2017 7:14 amIm not bashing the coaches...but the attention to detail on the field goal try was either ignored by the players or not reinforced by some coach. Re: Why the coach bashing
What would you consider coach bashing? I thought this was a place to have discussions and maybe even *gasp* differing opinions *gasp*. Is 2nd guessing a play call or situation bashing? Is pointing out perceived issues bashing?
To me, bashing is questioning character or intelligence. I must just have thicker skin than others. I certainly do not want this to be a kool-aid drinking session, and do not want NY WFAN style conversation either. those are the two gutters and keep it somewhere in between is fine. Give examples next time!

91 - To answer your specific question - no, 2nd guessing and discussion are quite appropriate as long as it is founded in reality - the thread "Why Not", I think is a good example of discussion of why/why not ---

Re: Why the coach bashing
No I'm all in with you. We've shown to everyone in the FBS how talented our football team and staff really is. We haven't beaten a P5 team since Michigan, however we've demonstrated to everyone just how excellent our football program is. Lost to UT because of bad luck, lost to Wake because of a blocked kick and careless mistakes, lost to Clemson simply because they were national champ material and lost to UGA because we gassed out. We are for real. This ought to draw more talent to App State, especially the ones who want to feel like champs and get scholarships to bad P5 teams like Boston College and ECU (no offense lol).

True, but Satterfield may be the best coach we may ever get. If you and others disagree, that's fine. If you consider this cool aid drinking, then that's your opinion, too. I and others may not. I don't know what you mean by particular examples. Our definition of bashing is different apparently.

Re: Why the coach bashing
I heard on the radio a few days ago something that fits App pretty close on winning the big games. They were actually talking about Kentucky I think on how close they are but can't get over the hump to win the close ones in big match ups. The comment one announcer made was it is kind of a mental block and once they get passed that they will start winning those games. I feel this wall will be scaled one day and these wins will come more often for us as well. I remember a few years back we were 1-5 and a lot of folks were on the "why did we move up it is mistake" bandwagon. Then look what has happened since. We got over the hump then and will get the big wins eventually on a regular basis---I hope.

Re: Why the coach bashing
Yep, I think you're right about that; unfortunately, I also think that some fans have expectations that we're going to go undefeated every year even playing upper tier P5 teams and that's just not going to happen...shouldn't be an expectation. We don't have P5 budgets or P5 recruiting advantages....not yet anyway.Yosefus wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2017 9:04 amI heard on the radio a few days ago something that fits App pretty close on winning the big games. Re: Why the coach bashing
Not sure if this thread fits what I think but here goes. We always read about team X or team Y really improving or really close or just has to remove a mental block, etc and is about to be a winner. Fact is that not every team is going to be a winner. In the FBS ranks there will always be the teams that traditionally win every year and there will be many who hover around .500 and still others who stink (every year). There are what, 128 or so FBS teams? App has established itself as a top third team (or just on the outside of that). Unless something drastic happens on the mountain it's hard to imagine that changing anytime soon. A school like Kentucky will most likely never get over that .500 hump as long as they play in the SEC. Texas St gave us more of a game then they should have. People gave them credit for being improved yet there they sit, tied for last. I love that my School is a perennial 10-2, 9-3 type program and I love that our "hump" is beating a big boy.

Re: Why the coach bashing
Depending on what your definition of "anytime soon" is, I don't agree that we've hit our plateau in the FBS ranks. We're still infants in the FBS world and still playing with recruits we landed as an FCS team, not knocking those guys, many are great players but we should be getting bigger, stronger, better players if we keep winning at this level. Many of our FBS-recruited guys were red-shirted and are just now getting playing time. The best is yet to come. For 2018, we've got a big hole to fill at QB, outside of that we should be better next year and going forward.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2017 9:20 amNot sure if this thread fits what I think but here goes. Re: Why the coach bashing
I really can't say that I've seen much this week that would qualify as "coach bashing." There have been a few stray comments that I assume were made in the heat of the moment. I think one implied that coaching was a problem. I really don't feel motivated to dig for the specific reference. Anyone who believes coaching is a problem at App is just delusional. Our coaching staff isn't perfect and questioning or discussion a specific game (play calls) or component (discipline) is completely appropriate. The point that it crosses the line is when the poster assumes he/she knows the priorities thought processes of the coaches. I don't think Satterfield will EVER deal with discipline issues publically by throwing an individual under the bus. I do believe he deals with them in practice as he should. There are very few on this board who actually have the inside perspective to know that kind of thing, and I don't see them posting criticism.
