Sirius/XM today

Unread post by appst89 » Fri Sep 02, 2016 5:12 pm

Did a lot of driving and had a chance to listen to parts of all the college football shows on Sirius/XM today. Lots of props for the Apps from all over the country. But one thing they all had in common was that they absolutely killed Satt for the clock management at the end of regulation. It was kind of bittersweet hearing all the accolades for our play and then hearing them wreck Satt over and over again.

Apologies if this has already been asked in another thread, but has Satterfield spoken on all of the 4th quarter injuries? Admittedly it felt like our players were flopping to slow the game down BUT that's never been our M.O. A LOT of Tennessee fans are bashing App pretty hard for that.

Well, kind of hard to defend him on that aspect. This wasn't a one-time thing, either. Absolutely brutal to end regulation with a time out going to waste. Having said that, I'm a huge fan of Satterfield and the staff he's put together and the way they are developing this team. So proud of the way we played last night.

Those Tennessee fans should suit up and see what happens to their bodies when they are out there giving everything they've got to push around guys 50 pounds heavier for a couple of hours. Dumbasses.

Yea it's really hard to be negative at all right now but clock management at the end of regulation was bad. My guess is had the kicking game not looked so bad it would have been managed different. Again nothing but pride here and expectations that the things that cost a victory will be fixed. Way more positives to be happy about with this loss.

My guess (and hope) is with what would have been close to a 50 yarder, Satterfield wanted to give Lamb one more play to get what he could get, then call the TO. But Taylor has a tendency to waste time. He could have snapped that ball about 3 seconds earlier and would have then stepped out with time left giving Rubino a chance.

Seemed to me more like poor execution than bad coaching.

IIRC, when the drive started the clock and field position were such that we were sort of split between trying to get a drive going while also not giving them the ball back in good field/clock position. So that shift from semi- conservative to aggressive had to happen on the fly. And it wasn't just coaches- there were a couple times where players could have gotten out of bounds and didn't.

That said... yeah, we botched the clock management.

That's exactly what Satt said happened in the post game interview

UT fans are insane to think we were faking injuries to slow the game down. The fact that two of our leaders on D were sitting on the bench during critical drives at the end of the game would be enough to show anyone with a brain that their injuries were real.

No, not so much a coaching issue. One play before, Cox gets snuffed out on a screen pass. The next play was a set up run to the middle of the field. The play in question was next, an attempt to get a little further down field that didn't work. TL tried to get the play off, but got it off late; an issue we had twice before in the game. He had no one open so he ran for the boundary, getting there too late. A TO should have been called before the play, (perhaps a coaching issue?).
However it was a succession of events, some caused by UTs D, some by questionable on field decisions by young men......Part of the educational process of a university. It is said the most improvement occurs between games one and two. We shall see better next week.

That's what I don't get. If we were going to fake injuries, which we better never do, why would we do it with Gray, Gilchrist, and Law who have 85 starts between them? Those are guys we want on the field no matter what. If we were gonna flop, I'd like to think we'd be smart enough to use our true freshman cornerback instead.

Hard to believe that there wasn't something resembling a plan for managing the clock but it was either a bad plan, executed poorly, or a combination of both. Players may have first game jitters, but coaches shouldn't.

I'm a bit concerned by the cramping also. We are traditionally a very well conditioned team, and not accustomed to hearing that questioned. I know most of our guys like Law would never embellish something like that, but there was at least 1 that looked a bit fishy (one of the DBs I think).

It is a hydration issue not a conditioning issue.

Ok but could Knoxville really be that much worse than Greenville? I'll admit to never having been to the former but those ECU games were absolutely brutal and I don't recall us having this issue, especially not to the extent we saw last night.

I don't have enough knowledge of the two situations to answer that. I only know that I am told by an excellent trainer that it is a hydration problem not conditioning. A guess would be that they were better hydrated prior to and during the ECU games but that is only a guess.

As for Sirius/XM Childers and Neuheisel had been talking very complimentary about App all week saying they thought we would give Tenneessee a game. They even had Scott on their show Thursday morning.

One big issue one the final drive was Hopkins not getting out of bounds on the sweep. That cost us 20-30 seconds.

There is one obvious reason why App State was not faking injury there at the end of the ball game. I don't think anyone else has mentioned it.

WE HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM WITH THE SPEED OF THEIR OFFENSE! IN FACT THE TENN OFFENSE DID NOT SCORE A TD IN REGULATION.

The closest they could do is recover a fumble in the end zone -- and we shoulda had that one.

So, all those Tenn. fans can kiss my Apps! Excuses anyone?

Miami is in trouble!
