We are in need of someone to take over the maintenance of the MMB. Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. If anyone here is interested in helping to keep the board running, please let me know via DM.

it really sounds like to me (and I don't consider myself objective) that UNC is saying - "Yeah, we did it - what are you going to do about it punk"

That about sums it up from my perspective as well. I'm amazed at the number of ways this has been drawn out. Looks like we'll all get a front row seat for seeing just what "ad infinitum" looks like.WVAPPeer wrote:OH NO ---DaphneUrquhart wrote:Looks like I may die before this story does ...

This is America. If someone is reckless, careless, grossly negligent, disregards rules and then lies about it, there is NO WAY they escape punishment. Right Jim Comey?

At least they've finally removed the mask. Now they no longer have to act as if they care/ever cared about academics. They know their accreditation will never be in real jeopardy. THIS is The Carolina Way.

Actually, as a long time Carolina hater, this is the most respectful thing that they have ever done. I'm slightly impressed. They just gave the NCAA a big "F-U" and is daring them to act. I really didn't anticipate that. I was for certain they were going to skate, and they still may, but this has peaked my interest again. You know the NCAA despises these kind of responses.

Re: The latest from Chapel Hill ---
Say what you will about the CHeaters, and I'm a long time hater of the elitists, but what they did was clever. There is almost no way to definitively prove it, but all circumstantial evidence (millions of pages of emails) strongly suggest that UNC-CHeat systematically created and ran a fraudulent curriculum (not just one class, but an entire department) for the purpose of allowing substandard students to remain eligible to play sports. Cleverly the CHeaters allowed anyone on campus to sign up for the classes, and while there doesn't seem to be any written account of this, I would not be surprised if members of the Athletic Dept colluded with academic counselors to make certain that athletes made up less than 50% of the enrollees in the fraudulent classes. Their admission and big "F You" to the NCAA is a tacit admission of such.
CHeat is basically saying, yep we ran fraudulent classes, gave fake grades, and useless degrees, but because it was not just athletes, the NCAA can't touch us and our fraudulent banners hung on the back of ineligible players get to remain in the rafters of the CHeater Dome . . . they will skate.

At least their reputation is forever tarnished and they can't with a straight face spout The Carolina Way line again or comment on others academics without looking ridiculous. So, they may not have gotten the death penalty that they deserved, but they were knocked off their self created pedestal.

Honestly and unfortunately I don't agree with you here - they will see it as they've been vindicated and were innocent all along - I have very smart friends/others who always believed they were targeted because of who they were not because of anything improper they had done. One who has multiple degrees and is a VP at a large company told me these exact words regarding the national championship game, "When they called that last foul on Kennedy Meeks, the turned the TV off, I knew right then THE FIX WAS IN!" - I could go on but I am sure many of you have similar stories ---NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote:At least their reputation is forever tarnished and they can't with a straight face spout The Carolina Way line again or comment on others academics without looking ridiculous. Re: The latest from Chapel Hill ---
They have given us the secret to dealing with the NCAA: only self report minor issues; spend millions on PR and spend millions on high priced attorneys to negotiate behind closed doors with the NCAA. Also, make sure your athletic department is not directly involved. The PR people have already been ramping it up hoping that the masses will forget this ever happened over time. NCAA has already been purchased by football and basketball, I expect penalties to be handed to all of the other universities in the North Carolina system just so we know our place.

What UNC is saying is saying to all other universities is that the best way to let athletes cheat is to make sure that an equal number of non-athletes are also allowed to cheat. It's a blueprint for all athletic programs.

Re: The latest from Chapel Hill ---
Yep. Athletes weren't given extra benefits over the general student body so they think the NCAA has no jurisdiction. Crazy. Cheating is still cheating and the NCAA should punish them for the athletic involvement, and in addition to the NCAA other agencies should (actually did) handle the academic punishment.newtoasu wrote:What UNC is saying is saying to all other universities is that the best way to let athletes cheat is to make sure that an equal number of non-athletes are also allowed to cheat. Re: The latest from Chapel Hill ---
I was at the English Beat concert last night at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro. The bands were helping with a teenage/young adult cancer fundraiser that is operating out of UNC Hospitals. The crowd contained a lot of folks that were fans of UNC with a few Duke fans in the crowd. Eric Montross was leading an auction of a tour of the Smith Center. Good cause obviously while there was some light Duke/UNC ribbing. Eric makes a comment about UNC still playing in April.
I wanted to yell out, "At least other schools in the state have not been on probation from SACs." I showed maturity and refrained from killing the good vibes, (and my spot on the front row.) But what a mindset so many have that follow UNC athletics.

Re: The latest from Chapel Hill ---
I think that the whole point of the NCAA and UNC-CHeat dragging all this out for so long is to drag it out to the point where people quit caring. It's clear that UNC broke NCAA rules but the NCAA doesn't want to punish their golden child. I fully expect that once all this is over the NCAA will say "yep, they cheated but they had to deal with the investigations so long and that is punishment enough" and that'll be the end of it.
The mountains are calling and I must go
