Chancellor Gets a Timeout from me.

I predicted before the hiring process started that the new Chancellor would be a female. IMOp. that was a major consideration. Diversity and all that stuff.

Having interacted with Sheri on a number of occasions, I can confirm that this is not the first time she has mispronounced Appalachian. She has corrected herself at times and just let it fly other times. While that might not be an issue for some, I believe it is an issue when there is a wrong and right way to say something. It'd be like the President or Head Coach of Notre Dame pronouncing the name of the school like they do in the Disney movie. It's just not correct.

While I don't want to just assume, I kind of get the feeling that Sheri has never really adjusted to the Appalachian way or conformed to the Appalachian culture. She still acts very much like an outsider and it shows/is beginning to show more and more. By the beginning of year three, I was hoping for much more. It's quite possible. None of us really know what's going on, unfortunately. Every administration does things very differently. Some are very open about their struggles and what they are dealing with. Others hold their cards very close to their chest. I think Appalachian's current administration falls into the latter.

I suspect by now that Dr. Everts has had her nose and her $335,000+ annual salary "rubbed in it" more than enough. It was a serious PR blunder for someone of her professional stature to make anywhere--but especially in front of the home-folks and during an on campus functon. Then again, as hapapp mentioned, it's somewhat understandable considering her midwest roots. I seriously doubt she'll make this particular mistake again during her tenure at our Alma Mater.

This isn't the first time she's made this mistake. Unfortunately she's made it numerous times over the last two years. Enough is enough.

For all of you who think it's no big deal, try calling your wife a different name for the rest of the week.

I don't doubt her qualifications as I don't know what they are, but couldn't we have found someone with actual ties to Appalachian, e.g. an alumnus, former instructor at ASU, a former administrator at ASU, etc.?

Who is to say we didn't? Recall App selected our top 3 candidates. The UNC Board of Gov's then made the decision on SNE. I understand the 16 campus system and see the benefits of it. However, I am not a fan of this selection process.

Not according to the change.org petition, appears to be several athletic donors. I have had multiple encounters with her and she seems quite self-centered and egotistical to me....wouldn't hurt my heart a bit to see her rolling down 321 for good

Tongue in cheek or not, given that people are questioning her leadership this does not win many converts. This is App 101 she's a sophomore so should be past this.

I think she has already evidenced that need by not being able, willing, or caring enough to pronounce our University's name correctly. She's been here three years or so now. Isn't that long enough to learn to pronounce it correctly? Heck one of my 10 year old's friend's sister who just moved to NC from Vermont already knows how and says it correctly..even her parents.

It will very directly depend on her health, her family situation and her evals from the faculty, BOT and BOG. When she does decide to move on (or when it's decided for her); there's a 75 percent chance or better that her replacement will be another woman. Perhaps even a black or Hispanic woman. The ASU and UNC-BOG Diversity Offices are still open for business; and still mean business. It's a "PC" fact of life on every public university campus these days.

Just go ahead and get over it now so you don't make your ulcer act up or get your blood pressure all out of whack!

I hqve not read the change.org stuff. My opinion is developed based on my own interactions and those of current students I have personally spoke with. Many people are just not warming up to her. BTW I was actually excited that we were getting a female chancellor. I hope we get a female POTUS. So this is not even a factor for me. I understand the reasons why she was not available during some of the protests so no problem there either. She had a tough act to follow but that is just how it is.
