Satts Contract
You can see his full contract on the athletic web site. The bonus structure at the end is very interesting. He gets more for a SB championship than a bowl win. Also strange that an access bid and win would result in a similar bonus to one of the tie ins. Anyway pretty good compensation in my opinion. Not up to P5 but by 2020 will be competitive with SB (except ULL of course).

I like you confidence better than mine that Satt will stay through his entire contract.

Re: Satts Contract
May be the contract was structured to account for the fact that despite a stellar season (or couple of seasons), we may never have a real shot at an access bid unless the Sun Belt as a whole starts to pick it up.

Re: RE: Re: Satts Contract
Maybe so because there was also a level for making the CFP and that too was similar compensation to winning the tie in.Yosef wrote:May be the contract was structured to account for the fact that despite a stellar season (or couple of seasons), we may never have a real shot at an access bid unless the Sun Belt as a whole starts to pick it up.

For some reason I get the feeling he is about more than money. Also he is young so there is plenty of time after he builds his legacy here. $500K in NC is damn good money./\PP ST/\TE GRAD 09 wrote:I like you confidence better than mine that Satt will stay through his entire contract.

Agreed - I get the feeling that as long as we treat him right and fair, it would take a really great offer to get him off the mountain. The man bleeds black and gold and yes, money talks, but he's also moved around a little bit between his App stints, so he knows what it's like to live elsewhere vs. in the Boone area. Making more money is great, but the more you've moved for career, the greater the consideration you give as to where you're moving as opposed to jus how much you're making.appbio91 wrote:For some reason I get the feeling he is about more than money. Re: RE: Re: Satts Contract
I never said he would jet for more money. The fact he played for and coached App State in the past does not mean he has dreams of staying forever. I could be wrong, but I don't think I've heard him say anything showing a long term commitment. If App State continues our success which I feel we will the next few years, P5 schools will come knocking. It's hard to turn that down money aside. An opportunity to be known on a bigger stage. But who knows? Really nobody but Scott himself. Long term commitment coaches are somewhat a thing of the past. Saban has been around for awhile at Bama, but where do you go once you've reached the top? It's a different era of CFB now. The traditional stay with a team forever coaches aren't really around asuch today. I hope I am wrong, but don't want to be naive and ignore reality.Yosef wrote:Agreed - I get the feeling that as long as we treat him right and fair, it would take a really great offer to get him off the mountain. I think it's safe to say there will not be another Jerry Moore type tenure at App State but given the connection and the circumstances of leaving to return I feel good about the extension. But who knows, like you said only he knows what his ambition is.

Make no mistake, this is a business and he would go right away for the right opportunity. It's about taking care of his family.

Re: Satts Contract
I agree.
Sometimes location plays a part in "taking care of your family".
Would App be patient with Satt if he had a couple 4-8 seasons? If the answer is no we shouldn't hold him looking for a bigger pay check against him should he ever entertain it.

Re: Satts Contract
I understand the importance of taking care of family but that means much more than taking the highest paying job. More money is often NOT the best thing for one's family though the allure of a fat contract with another University would be tough to pass up for many people. Scott is making a salary most of us on this board would die for, in a job we could never dream to have. He will make more and more money here at Appalachian State the longer he stays and grows the program. it will be a real challenge to stay on the trajectory he currently has the team on and I'm betting that challenge will be enough to keep him here a few more years. He is a competitor after all and clearly likes a challenge.
If he does leave us for greener pastures on the other side of the fence. I hope it's for the right reasons. Regardless, I will be sad to see him go, will wish him the best and if we're not playing his team I'll be rooting him on.

Re: Satts Contract
Wouldn't most of us agree that there is a reasonable ceiling for App Football (as far as earning potential goes)? We talk on other threads about expansion and most of us are realistic in knowing that we probably won't have and fill a 70K seat stadium ever. In my mind if we ever get to a point where we expand and fill consistently a 35K stadium with solid home competition we will be just fine. We simply can't move Boone to a more central location in the state that is easy to get to. Television options hurt every program. That being said how much can we reasonably expect to be able to pay Scott or any other head coach along with competitive salaries for assistants? I agree with some of you other guys. A salary north of $500K is not something I will ever see. The "taking care of the family" thing cracks me up, especially when I hear it out of the mouth of a pro athlete making insane money and cries for even more because he needs to "take care of his family". I would think that Satt's family is in good shape. I hope he plans to stay a while but I agree, if he rattles off a few more 10 win seasons he will get offers App can't possibly match. If he bolts for $3M a year I wish him well.

Re: Satts Contract
It's not like money is the only reason coaches jump to bigger jobs. Coaches are competitors. They usually want to compete at the highest levels. While I'm sure we'd all like to think App could compete for a CFP spot in our lifetimes, the reality is that's a much more attainable goal at most P5 jobs. And of course, the money that comes with that doesn't hurt either.
I've said it before, will say it again - while I'd love to have coaches who win big and wouldn't leave App for anywhere, realistically that's going to be rare. I don't expect to keep our coaches when someone offers to quadruple their salary and give them a job at a big-name program. The goal for me is to find guys, and compensate them, so that they aren't looking to bolt for the first UNCW or Tulane that comes along.

Re: Satts Contract
I agree with what you say. I believe that our program is capable of being at the top of the G5's (along with Boise, Houston, etc). A few more 10+ win seasons and Satt will definitely become a hot commodity. If we do get to that point he will most certainly be in a tough position. Does he stay at a place where he loves even though his earning potential and realistic level of winning will be close to capped? I would love to see our program reach the level that Houston is at but it will be very tough- mostly due to our conference affiliation. I would not blame Satt one bit if he can quadruple his salary. I foresee him receiving offers from lower P5's. Would he bolt to a crappy P5 for the increase in salary or does he truly want to build a power in Boone? Nothing lasts forever so I will just sit back and enjoy everything while it lasts.EastHallApp wrote:It's not like money is the only reason coaches jump to bigger jobs. Coaches are competitors. Re: Satts Contract
I guess Satt will need to access where his ceiling is (i.e. Sparky Woods) and if that is what he wants to risk. From his past history he has done a good job of evaluating those matters.
