AppState at El Cid

Unread post by asu66 » Wed Jan 22, 2014 3:29 pm

ASU MBB was to have departed campus at mid-day today bound for Charleston and one last visit as members of the Southern Conference to McAlister Field House on the campus of The Citadel. I have it on good authority that the Apps will be greeted with the full pomp of a dress parade by The Citadel's Military Regimental Band, Pipe Band and the entire Corps of Cadets upon their arrival at McAlister for tonight's practice. 8-) After all, El Cid is on an eight game losing streak. What better way to pick up a win than for the Knobs to get the Apps on their Charleston hardwood. The Bulldogs (4-16, 0-5 SoCon), are winners of three of their last four against the Mountaineers.

Image

While it's true that ASU holds a 51-25 edge in the series that dates back to 1968, the Knobs have won three of the last four games and six of the last nine against the Mountaineers. Given RJr Jay Canty's loss due to surgery performed on his shooting hand yesterday (Tuesday); El Cid gets the nod as the favorite to bring its eight game loosing streak to a close in tomorrow night's game. They just seem to have our number. Get ready for El Cid's Army discipline, patience and "never say die" attitude to take it's toll. Not to mention the Corps of Cadets standing throughout the game chanting "never say die; never say die." I already have a headache and tipoff isn't till tomorrow night.

One sad fact remains. Both of these teams are bad. How bad, you ask? ASU (RPI # 337) and El Cid (RPI #345) have been Presbyterian's (dead last RPI #349) only two wins this entire season.

I'll wrap this epistle up with one more bit of embarrassing trivia. RealTimeRPI.com has El Cid ten (10) point favorites in this game. Yeah, 10 points. Beam me up, Scottie. And, p-u-l-e-a-s-e make it quick.

The team has played better without Baskin. They play more as a team without him on the floor jacking up fade away 20 footers.

Strangely enough in the weak SoCon, this is actually an important game for the Apps. It sure would be nice to beat the Citdogs in any sport before we depart the conference as they have been on quite a roll against the Apps as of late.

Maybe the spell gets broken tonight!

Yeah, El Cit has a bit of a men's sports streak going on against App. Wrestling this year, Football 2013, all five baseball games in 2013, the inexplicable hoops loss last year, wrestling last year and football 2012. 10 games in a row.

When we shoot over 45% we win. Shot selection seems to be much better.

The SoCon is so bad that this young team may be able to win a few more.

Nice effort tonight guys.

Congrats to the players for battling through tough times. Good team effort again tonight. Impressive performance by Kobani. Good scoring output by Hamilton again. Interesting that only 4 players scored for the Citadel - and no bench points. Solid defense! Hopefully the Apps can continue their resurgence and finish with a respectable conference record.

Apps break free of SoCon cellar; bench help from Eaves and Kobani too much for El Cid; Kobani break-out (9 of 10 from floor) is a huge positive going forward. Wrong time to have another week off. Who made this schedule?

Consider our schedule a going away present from our "friends" in Spartanburg. ;)

We knew CofC would be leaving and there would be a 16-team schedule over a year in advance.

Elon solved their problem of having last Saturday off in the 11-team SoCon by scheduling UMass, who also had Saturday off in the 13-team A10.

The A10 team that has this weekend off is first-place St Louis. In the 13 MEAC, Delaware State is off.

I don't think this is that bad of timing. Now that we have found what works we have more time to make the adjustments to best take advantage of it.
