In my opinion, Marcus Williams needs to be taken fully out of his time out corner and be the feature back. His read of the holes and ability to run with power through even the small creases is a difference maker. You are absolutely right that we need him on the field. Clark's point should be proven by now. He's a better back than the others in my opinion....not that they aren't very good as well.hapapp wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 6:00 amWe now have 5 backs that have run for 100 yards in a game and we saw why we need Marcus Williams on the field. Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
We have four talented running backs (five counting Zac Thomas). I’m not concerned with our running game. My worry is with our receivers. With Thomas Hennigan and Jalen Virgil ailing, and our young receivers still works in progress, we haven’t shown we can pass with any high degree of efficiency. Our running game sputters because we are constantly facing eight and nine defenders within four yards of the line. That La.-Monroe team we played yesterday was perhaps the worst FBS team we’ve seen, maybe ever. Had we been clicking, the score easily should have been 60-7. But until Hennigan and Virgil are healthy and we get Christian Wells, Christan Horn, Dashaun Davis, Henry Pearson and Mike Evans performing at a higher level, then we’ll continue to be a decent Sun Belt team with at least one critical flaw.

I hear what all the Debbie Downers are saying, but I agree with AH. This was a sleepwalk. Yawn.ah59396 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 7:02 pmI dunno to me it looked like a case of playing a lowsy opponent and just sort of sleepwalking through it. We knew we were going to win this game at kickoff and basically ran the ball at will.Bootsy wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 6:29 pmI have concerns about this game but they have nothing to do with the score.
They have everything to do with our:
1. Poor offensive execution at critical points in the game
2. Lack of offensive energy/rhythm in the 2nd half
3. Abysmal red zone production (the trend continues)
4. Very shaky kicking game
On the other side of the ball, our defense played LIGHTS OUT today.
If this had been our first game after the COVID layoff, then I get it. But after the way we dismantled A-State last wk, leaves me wondering. The toughest part of the schedule remains to be played.
Certainly could have been a bit crisper but I’m not too worried. I had trouble caring about this game too.
What's the difference between a win by 1 point, and a win by 50 points? Nothing. And those 49 points, are ... in fact ... wasted. A 1 point win just eliminates the sleepwalking.
Anyone seen Coastal Fan's message board? They expect to be top 15. And, maybe they are.
They did look OK, but not great, to me. In their mind, as long as they are better than So.Car., its a winning season. Coastal is a team we will wake up for. Should be a good one. I hope they are undefeated and in the top 10 on Nov. 21.

Coastal's win over IOWA State keeps getting better and better. There is a chance Iowa St. wins the Big 12. When we beat Coastal who beat Iowa State who won the big 12....we are going to look pretty good. Of course, back to my Marshall thread, Marshall will look even better if they are undefeated. Marshall beat App, who beat Coastal and won the Sunbelt, who beat Iowa St. that won the Big12. Just sayin.

RulE 8 / sCoRinG FR-85Opportunity to ScoreARTICLE 2. A try is an opportunity for either team to score one or two points while the game clock is stopped after a touchdown. It is a special interval in the game which, for purposes of penalty enforcement only, includes both a down and the “ready’’ period that precedes it.a. The ball shall be put in play by the team that scored a six-point touchdown. If a touchdown is scored during a down in which time in the fourth period expires, the try shall not be attempted unless the point(s) would affect the outcome of the game. (Exception: If the scoring team is ahead by one or two points, they have the option to forego the try.)
Poster comment: I am sure this is about injury prevention for a play that has no bearing on the W-L outcome of the game beyond betting spreads and maybe PAT records. If the game was within two points the try would have proceeded. If I were a coach I would pull my defense off the field or line them up in the corner of the field and keep them away from the other team to avoid an intentional or accidental injury and let the offense take the 2 points without any attempt to stop it. Games over either way. If the team is up by 1 or 2 points the offense can decline to even go for a try and game over so as to know have a "Furman" happen and then lose the game. Of course with our Miracle on the Mountain there was still time on the clock.

Yeah, Coastal’s win was the most expected and least impressive of the three SBC over Big XII that day. Louisiana beat Iowa State and Arkansas State beat Kansas State. Now KState and Iowa State are tied for the top of the Big XII and Kansas is dead last, as is the custom.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 1:22 pmCoastal beat Kansas.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 12:34 pmCoastal's win over IOWA State keeps getting better and better. Coastal is still three light-years away. Methinks we need to be more concerned with that fanny-numbing ride to and
game versus Texas State.

The most impressive thing about the win by Coastal over Kansas is that it was the second time and Kansas had been talking about payback. Going into a B12 team and beating them in a "revenge" game is a bit impressive even if the B12 team is Kansas.appchicago wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 1:37 pmYeah, Coastal’s win was the most expected and least impressive of the three SBC over Big XII that day. If CC has beaten the Kansas basketball team, now that would be impressive, something to talk about and helped their strength of schedule.

Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
I went back yesterday and rewatched the game. After my 2nd pass I changed my original opinion of how our team played. We played better than I previously thought. I do think out team came out ready to play on both sides of the ball but lost more and more focus as the game progressed. The lack of total points was more due to lack of execution at key points and an overall slow paced game. Overall, our team just did not seem like they embraced the game with a sense of urgency. I was very disappointed in our execution on goal line series at end of first half. Because we didn't have to have it we just seemed so cavalier in our execution and ended up missing an obvious TD.
Our team needs to be better focused and play more crisply. Against better or more inspired competition (i.e. Coastal, ULL, GaSouthern) this will bite us like in the Marshall game.

Although it would be great if our offense was good enough so he would not have to run... I believe if ZT does not run as much as he does, designed and/or out of trouble situations, we lose 2 or 3 games this year. Just my humble opinion.

Re: Game Day Thread! (including menu)
Designed QB running plays help us for sure. Zac Thomas is an illusive runner and does well to avoid hard contact most of the time. I don't like the "our QBs don't slide" mentality though. It sounds awesome in theory and if Zac was 6'5" 230-240lbs I might feel differently but in practice, we haven't fared too well when he has been taken out by injury. That injury; a concussion, is likely to happen again and again over his career if he starts taking hard hits. One area in which I think Zac is underrated is in his slide which he does to perfection when we need to run the clock. Frequently you will see opposing QBs run out of bounds rather than take a hit or slide to keep the clock running; Zac does a fantastic job of understanding when to slide, when to run out of bounds and when to take the risk of a hit. I know, he didn't throw the ball away at the end of the half this weekend...no one is perfect.
