South end? Or what other end?Cro-Magnon App wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2026 4:13 pmI was on the other end of the county. Milking cows, throwing hay, stringing barbed wire, etc.
My grand parents on my mom's side had a farm but it wasn't much of a working farm when I was growing up as he died when I was 1. I did drive tractors, etc. And my uncle had some cows and horses on it occasionally. My dad had a horse at our house as well.
My uncle still lives on the land but it is down from 250 acres to about 40 and just has his house and my grand mother's old house on it. Everythig else was sold to other locals to use for growing.

Anyone remember Shawn Wheeler? Played for the Greensboro Monarchs and Charlotte Checkers. I think he also was on WFNZ back in the day.

The Bucks played in the Pinebridge Center that was in the middle of town. There was also a hotel, an indoor pool, and workout facilities at the time.
The old building and hotel was acquired by Mayland Community College on 2015. It currently houses the YMCA of Mitchell County and the cosmetology program for Mayland Community College, along with other spaces for various uses.

Re: Playoff Hockey
I stayed at that hotel. I was there for a week working on a client. Cannot even remember the client name. It was summer work. The senior and I would work 7 to 3 and go hiking in later afternoons. Hotel was not bad. I seem to remember that there were very high ceilings in the rooms.PoplarHillApp wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2026 8:13 amThe Bucks played in the Pinebridge Center that was in the middle of town. Re: Playoff Hockey
If I remember correctly he also played for John Brophy at Hampton Roads. It was pretty rare to see a black player back then.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2026 7:16 amAnyone remember Shawn Wheeler? Played for the Greensboro Monarchs and Charlotte Checkers. I think he eventually became a coach.
